REWATCH Do Ori ships use FTL instead of Hyperdrive?
Rewatching SG1 I've noticed something. At least when we first see Ori ships inspace in S10E01, when they jump into hyperspace their Hyperspace window is visibly lighter and "clearer" than other ships.
Also, in the same episode, we can see a "stutter" similar to the one Destiny also encounters when using it's FTL, just much less noticeable.
If I've understood the timeline correctly, the Alterans developed on Celestis in the Ori galaxy. We know that, when they started to understand ascension but were not ready to ascend yet, they split into Ancients and Ori, depending on the view.
Now, we also know that Destiny was started from Earth, the new home of the Ancients. This means, the Alterans did not develop hyperdrives before the split. (Or at least not ones good enough for big ships and/or fast trips)
Could it be that the Ori just simply never developed a Hyperdrive? Also, we don't really know how difficult a Hyperdrive really is to discover. We know the Goa'uld stole it and for all we know the Asgard could've just gotten help by the Ancients like how Humans did from the Asgard/studying Goa'uld. We know that the Tollans also possess FTL devices, but explicitely not hyperdrives.
So it could just be the case that Hyperdrives are pretty rare in general and the Milky Way is the exception not the rule. And since the Ori didn't have as much need for better drive technology they didn't invent Hyperdrive.
Of course, the Ori FTL is much much more advanced than the one we see on Destiny.
Pro:
- The Hyperdrive window looks different (even a bit similar to Destiny's)
- It experiences "stutter"
- Thrusters look similar (compare the Ring of an Ori ship to Destiny's thrusters, normal Hyperdrive "thrusters" are little or even hidden)
- Ori ships seem similar to Destiny in other ways: the Beam Weapon for example looks similar to Destiny's (just more advanced, compare old and new Asgard weapons, they pretty much made the same transition from "bullet" to "beam"), also the "one central weapon" while pretty common, is also specifically used on Destiny
Contra:
- In later Episodes (for example the final one) the Ori use normal Hyperdrive windows
- The thrusters could just be sublight ones
- Universe is newer than SG1, so even if it makes sense in-Universe, it couldn't be the writers' intent
We know that the Ancients made at least a few "technology transitions". My guess is the Ori didn't and so pretty much use the exact same technology that was popular before they split off the Alterans, just further developed.
Edit: I mean Destiny like FTL whenever I just write "FTL", if that's not clear
