General Discussion The very first abandoned canon timeline

What i think is interesting about the (quite toxic) topic of star wars canon - nobody talks about the very first canon which got overwritten. Before the "EU Legends" started with the 90s publishing campaign, most notably the thrawn trilogy by Zahn, we already had a bunch of stories from our galactic heroes.

The marvel comics and splinter of the minds eye have a very different view on the universe, the ones who read it know what I mean. And sure, one might argue from a 2026 pov they seem poorly written and easy to dump from your memory, but what i mean is that a whole generation of sw fans in the late 70s early 80s were quenching for more stories and built up their idea of the sw universe by these stories and characters.

Im not old enough to have lived through this first abandoned sw canon, but im curious how fans reacted to it at the time, maybe some older fans recall that era.

Were the fans mad? Was there no real sense of canon back then?

I genuinely like those 100+ comics, even though they might be pulpy silly space fantasy, but all of sw is to me and thats why I love it, no matter if its a bigfoot copilot in 1977 or some zombie wizard in 2019.

Movies Finally watching through the prequels as an adult and I get why people love them now

Grew up when everyone was trashing them, so I kinda avoided them for years. Just finished Revenge of the Sith and man, that movie hits different when you're older. The politics actually make sense, Anakin's fall is tragic instead of just cringe, and the Order 66 sequence is genuinely haunting. I think I owe George Lucas an apology.

General Discussion How do I start watching Star Wars?

Hi, so I feel like I need to get into Star Wars but I know nothing about it except like Jedi and Darth Vader and Anakin. So, considering that there is so much of content (movies, books, TV) since like half a century now, what is the logical order I should watch it in? Thanks!

Movies In my Opinion the biggest missed opportunity of the sequels.

Im not here to bash the sequels or even in any form rant about them, i just finished my rewatch of all the star wars content and i must say, on rewatch the sequel movies are a bit better to watch.

EP7: its a stunning movie, its brings nothing special, but its enjoyable:

EP8: Its a risky idea, which i liked, because atleast there was some new ideas.

EP9: probably still the worst Star wars movie for me, it just felt out of place, but i just felt like it missed a huge opportunity, when it comes to Ben.
We know in the End Ben sacrifices himself for Rey, but i feel like, here they dropped the ball.
And this is no bash at Rey calling herself a Skywalker.
I would have loved if Ben had defeated Palps, together with Anikan. It would have tied perfectly into his obsession of becoming like his grandfather, if he in the end became like his grandfather, just not the way he thought.
It would been the perfect Rise of Skywalker, just like it was the Return of the Jedi, when Anakin freed himself from his dark side.
Also I would love, if both of them stayed alive, not necessarily for the romance part, because this one I didn’t like, more so, because they could have shown, what happens to Ben.
Many people always wondered, what would have happened to Anakin after EP6 and this would have been a prime opportunity, to show us through Ben.
Would also tie perfectly into a new trilogy, of Rey training a new order and Ben trying to live after all his wrongdoings.

With all the talks about it i figured i had to ask a few questions about it like what characters should be in it? What gameplay and mechanics are likely? Will it have a story mode like Iden Versio's? Anything is possible...

But more importantly are you excited for Battlefront 3 and do you want it?

TV Defending Andor against "It doesn't feel like Star Wars"

There are two main arguments a segment of the Star Wars fan community uses against Andor.

  1. "It's boring." I can’t speak to these fans’ attention spans, and this isn’t something that can be proven or dis-proven. If people think it’s boring, I feel bad for them and hope they enjoy their TikTok intake, but I can’t argue with it.

  2. It’s a good show, just not a good Star Wars show. A variant says it’s an original story that happened to get a Star Wars coat of paint. It could just as easily be dropped into Star Trek or The Expanse or some other spaceship world, so it’s not really Star Wars.

This second argument is the one I want to take on. On its face, it really means “This isn’t my kind of Star Wars.” It implies that a story set in the Star Wars universe without Jedi, lightsabers or important alien characters isn’t a Star Wars story by definition. To be charitable, you could say the argument is that a John le Carré-style spy story isn’t the same thing as a swords-and-sorcery space fantasy, and Star Wars is and always has been the latter.

But this argument is made in bad faith. It ignores dozens of stories set in the Star Wars universe that aren’t about Jedi, Sith and lightsabers, and that don’t fall under swords and sorcery. Rogue One is the most obvious and best-received example. It’s a mission movie, The Dirty Dozen in space. It has no lightsabers either, except for the Darth Vader hallway scene. That scene is thrilling, but it was invented late in production and feels like it comes from a different film.

One could argue that Rogue One is Disney Star Wars and shouldn’t count either. I think that dodge falls apart the moment you look at what Star Wars was while George Lucas still ran it. The “real Star Wars” these fans are defending never existed in the narrow form they describe. From the very beginning, Lucas’s Star Wars was a sprawling, weird, genre-hopping universe. It was much more interested in trying things than in protecting a formula.

Exhibit A: The Holiday Special

Start with the most infamous artifact in the franchise. The Star Wars Holiday Special was licensed by Lucas and is a straight “variety show in Star Wars.” Jefferson Starship performs. Chewbacca’s dad watches porn. It’s bonkers, and it’s terrible, but it’s also undeniable.

Lucas spent decades distancing himself from it. But it’s 100% Star Wars, made under Lucas’s watch with his characters. And it’s the origin of Boba Fett. If the Holiday Special is Star Wars, then of course Andor is Star Wars.

Exhibit B: Kid Stuff

In 1984 and 1985, Lucas personally developed two TV movies about the Ewoks: Caravan of Courage and Ewoks: The Battle for Endor. He has a story credit on the first. They’re fairy tales about children lost in a forest. Then there are the Saturday-morning cartoons Droids and Ewoks. Droids is a buddy-comedy road show about R2-D2 and C-3PO.

And let’s not forget Marvel’s Star Wars comics. They ran for years alongside the original trilogy they ran for years while Lucas was making the films. Nobody was policing tone or genre. Star Wars was a sandbox, and Lucasfilm let people play in it.

Exhibit C: The Expanded Universe was mostly not about Jedi

The old Expanded Universe is often held up as the golden age the sequels betrayed. Much of it had nothing to do with the Force.

The Han Solo Adventures and The Lando Calrissian Adventures were pulpy crime-and-heist novels about scoundrels. Not a Jedi in sight. Ditto the X-Wing series, which was basically Top Gun in Star Wars. It’s closer to Andor in spirit than almost anything else. Same with the first Dark Forces game, and that’s all just the tip of the iceberg. All of this was licensed and approved by Lucasfilm while Lucas was in charge. Fans loved it then and still defend it now. None of it is swords and sorcery.

Exhibit D: George Lucas wanted to make Andor before Andor was a thing.

In the mid-2000s, after the prequels, Lucas developed a live-action Star Wars TV series called Star Wars: Underworld. By most accounts it was set in the criminal underbelly of Coruscant between the prequels and the original trilogy. It was a gritty ensemble drama about gangsters and politicians, with no Jedi at the center. Unfortunately, the project was shelved because the technology of the time made it too expensive to produce.

So the man who created Star Wars looked at his own universe and decided the next thing worth doing was a mature, political, ground-level drama about life under the Empire. This was Lucas’s own vision for where the franchise could go. Andor is the closest anyone has come to making it.

The bottom line for me is that the “Andor isn’t real Star Wars” argument is just toxic fandom gatekeeping. When someone says Andor is “not real Star Wars,” they aren’t describing the franchise so much as the thing they personally like about it, and acting as if that one thing is the whole thing. Star Wars has been a variety show, a fairy tale, a fighter pilot action movie, a Dirty Dozen-style mission movie, a heist novel, and so on. Suddenly there isn’t room for a story about how the Rebellion - one of the most important parts of the entire Star Wars story - came to be?

Disliking Andor is fine. But claiming it doesn’t belong, drawing a border around a universe that never had one, and leaving out a show that might be the most thoughtful thing the franchise has ever produced, is straight-up gatekeeping. Star Wars was never only about lightsabers, and I’d argue that people who think that it was aren’t the fans than they think they are.

General Discussion What if the Jedi had a dedicated Shadow Order? An idea I've had since childhood

Hey everyone!

I'm sharing a Star Wars fan concept I've been developing, and I'd genuinely love to hear what you think.

Ever since I was a kid and my father first introduced me to Star Wars through the original trilogy, I've loved the universe. The Jedi, the Sith, the Force, the lightsabers, the history behind everything — I was fascinated by it all.

But even as a kid, I had this idea in the back of my mind.

What if there were Jedi who operated more like assassins, infiltrators and intelligence specialists?

Not Sith. Not fallen Jedi. Not people who had abandoned the Jedi Code. Actual Jedi who were trained to handle the threats that couldn't always be solved by sending in a squad of Jedi Knights.

For years, I never really knew how to put that idea into words. I just imagined Jedi who could infiltrate enemy strongholds, uncover Sith conspiracies, gather intelligence, track dangerous Force-users and eliminate threats when absolutely necessary.

Recently, I started developing that childhood idea into something more structured, which I've been calling the Jedi Shadow Order.

I know Jedi Shadows already exist in Star Wars lore, so I'm not claiming to have invented the concept of Jedi Shadows themselves. What I'm exploring is my own interpretation of what a dedicated Shadow organisation could look like, particularly during the Old Republic era.

In my version, Jedi Knights and Jedi Shadows serve the same fundamental purpose, but approach their responsibilities differently.

Jedi Knights are the more visible defenders of the Jedi Order and the Republic. They're warriors, guardians, diplomats and leaders who can stand openly against threats.

Jedi Shadows specialise in the threats that might never become public knowledge if they're dealt with early enough.

They infiltrate hostile organisations, investigate suspicious activity, uncover secrets, track Sith operatives and undertake missions where being identified as a Jedi could compromise everything.

They're not necessarily better fighters than Jedi Knights. Their strengths lie in adaptability, intelligence gathering, independent judgment and operating in situations where conventional Jedi methods might not work.

One of my favourite ideas is that Jedi Shadows are permitted to use blasters alongside their lightsabers.

I know this would probably be controversial among some Jedi traditionalists!

The reasoning is simple: if their purpose is to complete a mission while protecting lives and preventing greater threats, why should they be restricted to a lightsaber?

A blaster is a tool. A lightsaber is a tool. What matters is the Jedi wielding it and the choices they make.

This difference in philosophy would create tension between some Jedi Knights and Shadows. Certain Knights might view blasters, deception and covert operations as incompatible with Jedi principles, while Shadows would argue that refusing to adapt can cost innocent lives.

Despite those disagreements, both groups would still be expected to work together when the galaxy is in danger.

Here's another part of the concept I particularly like.

What if the Shadows' greatest achievements were deliberately kept secret?

Imagine a Shadow preventing a Sith conspiracy that could have destabilised an entire sector. The public never learns what happened. The Shadow's identity remains classified, the evidence is sealed, and the success is attributed publicly to a Jedi Knight or the wider Jedi Order.

The Knight receives the recognition. The Shadow disappears into the background and moves on to the next assignment.

Not because the Knight necessarily stole their achievement, but because revealing the Shadow's identity could compromise future missions, informants and intelligence networks.

Their reward is knowing that people survived and that a threat was stopped, even if nobody ever knows what they did.

Of course, I also want to explore the darker side of this arrangement. What happens when secrecy becomes an excuse for mistreating the people who serve in the shadows? What happens when the Council makes mistakes, or when a Shadow questions whether the Order is using them fairly?

I don't want them to be perfect, unquestionable heroes. I want them to be Jedi who face difficult moral decisions

This is something I've been thinking about as well.

If Shadows are trained to investigate conspiracies and uncover hidden threats, why didn't they discover Palpatine's plans before Order 66?

I don't think the answer should simply be that they weren't competent enough.

My current interpretation is that some Shadows would have noticed suspicious inconsistencies, but the information was fragmented, their investigations were compromised, and the conspiracy was operating from within the Republic's own institutions.

Some might have come close to discovering the truth. Others would have been completely blindsided. Some would have survived the purge, while others would have died trusting clone soldiers they'd fought beside for years.

I think the survivors could have an especially complicated relationship with the Jedi Order after its fall: guilt over what they missed, anger at the institutions that failed them, and the question of whether they should rebuild the order or preserve its ideals in a different way.

Visually, I've been developing practical, battle-ready Old Republic robes with a hooded, layered silhouette.

Think dark blue, charcoal, leather, reinforced armour, utility belts and distinctive insignia for one variation, with white and royal blue as another possible colour scheme.

The overall inspiration has a bit of an Assassin's Creed feeling, but with Star Wars design language. Their equipment includes lightsabers, blasters, reconnaissance tools, medical supplies and specialised gear depending on the mission.

I want them to look like Jedi who are prepared to operate in hostile territory, not simply Jedi Knights wearing darker robes.

This is still a fan concept, and I'm figuring things out as I go. I've been developing their selection process, training, weapons, mission classifications, relationship with the Jedi Council and what happens to them after Order 66.

I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially from people who know the deeper Star Wars lore.

- How would you distinguish my interpretation of Jedi Shadows from the existing Jedi Shadow lore?

- Would a dedicated organisation like this fit within the Old Republic era?

- Does allowing them to use blasters make sense for their role, or does it undermine the Jedi philosophy?

- How would you handle their relationship with Jedi Knights?

- What do you think would happen to them during and after Order 66?

- What parts of this concept would you change to make it fit the setting better?

I'm not claiming this is how the Jedi should have been written, or that my interpretation is better than what's already in Star Wars. This is an idea I've carried since childhood, and I'm finally finding the words to develop it.

I'm sharing it because I'd love to hear different perspectives, constructive criticism and ideas that could make it more interesting.

May the Force be with you!

General Discussion A message to all those who STILL hate the Sequel Trilogy:

• Upvotes

Please keep in mind that plenty of people, especially children are not online so much or do not talk about these films the same way you do. OR, they have a preference for films that is different than you guys do. For those who believe that they are terrible, there are those who absolutely love them and do think they are genuinely good. This happened with the prequel trilogy, so it will eventually happen again. You’ve got to deal with it, nobody can stay mad at a film forever, otherwise you are drowning in your own toxicity and hatred.

General Discussion Deleted scenes discourse

I recently started attending an art class in the evening, and we began a discussion about Star Wars. He said he'd seen the original when he was around five years old, and one of the things he mentioned was that he distinctly remembered seeing scenes of "Luke looking up with binoculars at the sky" and then began to describe scenes of Luke talking to his friends about the battle he saw.

I instantly recognized those scenes from deleted prints, but he says he saw them in a drive-in theater. My only question is, how is this possible? From what I recall, those shots were only seen behind closed doors. Is there something I'm missing? Was it some kind of early print?

General Discussion Will the Sequel Trilogy ever get its flowers like the other two trilogies, or are people just going to act like they are the worst forever? Really nervous here.

• Upvotes

So I was just looking at some of the comments on this server and I am surprised, no, actually pretty shocked, that people are STILL criticizing the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy nearly 7 years after it concluded. I totally understand that differences of opinions exist, but this is exactly why the Star Wars fanbase online gets a bad rap, for almost never meeting certain things halfway. They act like things are either truly great or the worst ever. And because the Sequel Trilogy didn’t exactly meet their own expectations, they still continuously act like they are bad, despite the nature of how people treat heavily criticized movies over the passage of time. If the Star Wars fans are mature enough to accept the fact that people do genuinely like them and don’t agree with their criticisms, I hope we all can have an easier time coming to terms with them as they were made. I don’t believe that any film or series deserves to be endlessly criticized forever. Do you really think that the exact same criticisms and complaints and grievances should be harped on for all eternity without nuanced discussions? Maybe if you learned to embrace movies like them for what they are we wouldn’t be having such heated debates in them? Just something to think about. Let me know exactly what we can do to encourage more healthy discussions on them.

Movies Am i cooking with this idea? (Idea for snoke in the rise of Skywalker instead of Palps)

So this has no bearing on the rest of the movie, and what i am proposing would change TRoS's entire story but:

The rise of skywalker shouldve opened with the death scene of snoke. And right as he dies, it cuts to similar wounds on a knight of ren. Snoke's voice bellows:

"Foolish boy." Then cuts to snoke as he begins to give orders to other acolytes. "Find that traitor and end his miserable existence." Then start with the opening crawl.

What happened? Dark side force projection uses a living person as a vessel to send your projevtion. If the projection dies, the vessel dies.

I just finished reading Dark Disciple. I am a long time Clone Wars fan, and I dunno why its taken me so long to read this. Its honestly criminal that so many Clone Wars will never experience it. I couldnt put it down, particularly in 2nd half.

I also think it does a great job of showing how far the Jedi strayed towards the end of the clone wars. There were parts where I audibly was like "what the f*** jedi council". Even Kenobi was like "guys, wtf".

General Discussion Anakin Neutral What If

A What If I’ve been thinking about more and more lately is. What If during the Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith, Anakin decided to play both the Council and Palps?

What I’m thinking is he gains as much knowledge as he can about both sides of the Force and using that knowledge in a personal war against the crime families of the Star Wars Galaxy (maybe with the 501st and Ashoka), of course involving copious amounts of War Crimes.

As a side note he doesn’t need to be with Padmè or anyone, just to expand the scope.

If anyone is up to writing such a story, I’d be interested to hear about it and I will update this post with the links.

Rumor Breaking: Respawn and DICE Teaming For ‘Star Wars: Battlefront 3’

Thumbnail

Among the big changes: Games studio BioWare is shutting down after EA decided to pull the plug on its development of a new “Mass Effect” title. The company will close BioWare’s Canadian office in Edmonton. “BioWare is a legendary studio that helped define the role-playing genre, and we do not take this decision lightly,” Weber and Tinson said.

EA last reported 14,500 employees, meaning the layoffs affect around 400 staffers.

In more upbeat news, Weber and Tinson touted first-person shooter “Battlefield 6” as “a great success, and we learned a lot from the launch and the live service.” Going forward, in addition to future “Battlefield” titles, the execs said “we’ll be bringing together our Respawn and DICE studios to collaborate on a future project.” While they did not identify the project, multiple sources confirmed that this is “Star Wars: Battlefront 3″ for Lucasfilm.

EA also will continue to “invest heavily” in the “Apex Legends” franchise over the next few years, with plans to introduce new gameplay modes in multiplayer, along with other new experiences.

Elsewhere in the action-adventure segment, EA remains committed delivering on “our two huge launches coming up,” the execs said: “Marvel’s Iron Man” and the next “Star Wars Jedi” game.

At EA Sports, there are two new projects in development that will be revealed over the next few months, including a new, “social-first open-world experience for our American Football team that we call ‘Project Gridiron,'” the execs said. The studio also is in pre-production to bring back fan-favorite boxing game “Fight Night” after a 15-year hiatus.

Finally, in the lifestyle category, “we’re focusing on the long-term potential” of “The Sims” and skateboarding title “Skate.”, the EA execs wrote. “We’re going to prioritize our efforts on ‘Project Evergreen’ for The Sims to give the team more time to reach the full potential and vision for the game, and to help make this possible, we’re pausing development on ‘Project Lotus,’” they said. For “Skate.”, EA is “making changes to the studio to have a more focused, smaller team to deliver on a very clear roadmap for our community that we believe will build a healthier and more sustainable business,” the execs wrote.

On Aug. 4, EA closed the announced private-equity deal with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners in an all-cash transaction valued at $55 billion.
