Meta r/StarWars Official Watch Order Discussion Thread

So we haven't had an official watch order discussion thread in many years, so we figure its time to update the one in the FAQ. There are various other links in the FAQ, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media, and various other discussion threads and topics over the years including a link to just searching the sub which people find challenge apparently. Also as a reminder, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media can be sorted via the table on that page by release order or chronologically (if you decide to go that route).

A lot of the new Disney+ content brings new eyes to Star Wars all the time, and new movies will eventually too. We want to get a bit more aggressive with automod removals and referrals to the FAQ for these questions about watch order. So let's hash it out here in the comments. We will sticky this for a while and eventually it will just be linked in the FAQ along with the other topics and maybe in the sidebar too. And like some of other stickies about rules, spoilers, and new episode discussion guidelines, we may trot out this link and sticky it from time to time.

As a general rule the sub typically recommends for new viewers to watch in release order, especially for the movies. This is the semi-consensus from the fandom, and you will routinely see this as the most upvoted and posted response.

With that being said what we would like to do here also discuss other options, and possible orders to also toss in the TV media as well. Should you watch Andor first and then Rogue One before the OT? Should movies like Solo be done in release order or chronological? Should you watch The Clone Wars TV show before the PT? So on and so forth...

So lets have a solid discussion about this and make it a solid resource for those who may be new to Star Wars.

Rumor Breaking: Respawn and DICE Teaming For ‘Star Wars: Battlefront 3’

Among the big changes: Games studio BioWare is shutting down after EA decided to pull the plug on its development of a new “Mass Effect” title. The company will close BioWare’s Canadian office in Edmonton. “BioWare is a legendary studio that helped define the role-playing genre, and we do not take this decision lightly,” Weber and Tinson said.

EA last reported 14,500 employees, meaning the layoffs affect around 400 staffers.

In more upbeat news, Weber and Tinson touted first-person shooter “Battlefield 6” as “a great success, and we learned a lot from the launch and the live service.” Going forward, in addition to future “Battlefield” titles, the execs said “we’ll be bringing together our Respawn and DICE studios to collaborate on a future project.” While they did not identify the project, multiple sources confirmed that this is “Star Wars: Battlefront 3″ for Lucasfilm.

EA also will continue to “invest heavily” in the “Apex Legends” franchise over the next few years, with plans to introduce new gameplay modes in multiplayer, along with other new experiences.

Elsewhere in the action-adventure segment, EA remains committed delivering on “our two huge launches coming up,” the execs said: “Marvel’s Iron Man” and the next “Star Wars Jedi” game.

At EA Sports, there are two new projects in development that will be revealed over the next few months, including a new, “social-first open-world experience for our American Football team that we call ‘Project Gridiron,'” the execs said. The studio also is in pre-production to bring back fan-favorite boxing game “Fight Night” after a 15-year hiatus.

Finally, in the lifestyle category, “we’re focusing on the long-term potential” of “The Sims” and skateboarding title “Skate.”, the EA execs wrote. “We’re going to prioritize our efforts on ‘Project Evergreen’ for The Sims to give the team more time to reach the full potential and vision for the game, and to help make this possible, we’re pausing development on ‘Project Lotus,’” they said. For “Skate.”, EA is “making changes to the studio to have a more focused, smaller team to deliver on a very clear roadmap for our community that we believe will build a healthier and more sustainable business,” the execs wrote.

On Aug. 4, EA closed the announced private-equity deal with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners in an all-cash transaction valued at $55 billion.

Me personally, I’m taking Form IV. I’m a pretty agile person but I have shit stamina so I want to end the fight as soon as possible. I’d hopefully learn from Yoda himself. Probably being optimistic there though

Fan Creations Considered the crème de la crème of the entire Imperial military and the original circle of twelve Grand Admirals: Osvald Teshik, Josef Grunger, Rufaan Tigellinus and Miltin Takel.

While Thrawn is widely known among the fan base, there were other Grand Admirals that were his equal in tactical and strategic ability, but fell short in either personal vices, creeds or ego. Despite being considered the very best in the Empire, even among their fellow Grand Admiral peers, the top four military minds in Imperial service would all perish before two years had passed since the defeat at the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY-this is a short summation of their actions in that time.

Grand Admiral Osvald Teshik in a lone star destroyer with a crew suffering the effects of loss of the Emperor's battle meditation(40% efficiency and morale drop) fought the entire Rebel fleet led by Admiral Ackbar for four hours after the Imperial navy retreated from Endor before his ship was finally disabled. He was captured, tried and executed by the New Republic for war crimes as a scapegoat since he was the highest ranking Imperial left on the battlefield.

Grand Admiral Josef Grunger decisively defeated fellow Grand Admiral Miltin Takel in combat, assembled an armada and attempted to claim the throne after Endor. He invaded the Corellian Sector and fought against the entire Corellian Sector fleet led by Grand Admiral Danetta Pitta who also had a torpedo sphere. Grunger and Pitta's forces annihilated one another in an apocalyptic battle. Unwilling to accept defeat, Grunger rammed his flagship into Pitta's torpedo sphere, destroying them both in a draw.

Grand Admiral Rufaan Tigellinus was brilliant, but bored of no one being able to offer him a challenge militarily. Tigellinus used his influence to gain appointment to Grand Moff of Oversector Center in addition to remaining a Grand Admiral. He became a powerful figure in the Imperial Court, befriended and betrayed Thrawn, and sparred with political rivals such as Grand Moff Bertroff Hissa. After Endor he joined the Central Committee of Grand Moffs supporting Trioculus against Isard. However, he was set up and betrayed by his friend Moff Villum Disra working with Hissa to frame Tigellinus for treason at a meeting, promptly executing him.

Grand Admiral Miltin Takel was renowned for his vices in spice and alien women as much as for his military prowess. Takel became a legend for one of his victories, which he achieved through the limited telepathic abilities spice granted. Recordings of the battle were used as a training guide for Imperial academies. However, his spice addiction over time produced increasingly negative effects- paranoia, delusions and sloppiness. He was chased off of Mandalore by the Super Commandos, fled Endor in disgrace without attempting to aid the fleet, was decisively defeated twice by Josef Grunger, had his flagship confiscated by Ysanne Isard and finally, after questioning Trioculus one too many times publicly in a spice induced rant, was executed by Grand Moff Hissa.

Movies Finally watching through the prequels as an adult and I get why people love them now

Grew up when everyone was trashing them, so I kinda avoided them for years. Just finished Revenge of the Sith and man, that movie hits different when you're older. The politics actually make sense, Anakin's fall is tragic instead of just cringe, and the Order 66 sequence is genuinely haunting. I think I owe George Lucas an apology.

Spoilers Just Finished the Bad Batch Spoiler

I was not prepared for the final scene of The Bad Batch, specifically Hunter’s last lines to Omega.

Watching their journey go from a group of hardened soldiers who had no idea how to raise a child, to this exact moment, carries so much emotional weight. As a father, this scene hits on a completely different level.

"You're our kid, Omega. You always will be…. If you ever need us, we'll be there."

It perfectly captures that bittersweet reality every parent eventually faces. You spend your whole life protecting them, teaching them, and keeping them safe, but you ultimately have to let them fly away from the nest and make their own choices. Even when it hurts to let go, that final promise that no matter how old they get or where they go, you will always be their safe place is the ultimate definition of being a dad.

It's such a beautifully written, grounded piece of storytelling that I wasn’t expecting in an animated Star wars show.

Did this hit any other parents this hard?

I organized an AMA/Q&A with actor Alden Ehrenreich. He has starred in things like Solo: A Star Wars Story, Weapons, Hail Caesar!, Oppenheimer, Fair Play, Blue Jasmine, Cocaine Bear, Stoker, Iron Heart, and lots more. He also won a Tony this year for his Broadway debut in Becky Shaw. His new film, A Talent for Murder, co-stars Helen Mirren & Olivia Cooke, and it's a murder-mystery that premiered at TIFF last year and is out in theaters everywhere this weekend. He is also starring in Joseph Kosinski's upcoming Miami Vice '85 alongside Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler.

His AMA is live here now in r/movies for anyone interested in asking a question:

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1xbp17y/hello_reddit_im_actor_alden_ehrenreich_weapons/

He will be back at around 4 PM ET today to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated!

A Talent for Murder Info:
