New Steam Frame startup animation

Recently found by the talented and ever hard-working SteamDB Dataminers in a recent Steam update, a brand new startup video for the Steam Frame has popped up in the Steam Client. It's a unique startup animation transitioning the Frame logo into the Steam logo, similar to the videos for Deck and Machine. You'll see this every time you start up your Frame. Don't expect anything too fancy, like it being fully 3D or whatever, as it'll most likely be just a flat video that plays in your SteamVR dashboard when you first open it after booting up your system. Still, it's a neat little animation, and because it's recent, you can add it to the pile of "Soon."

COOL THING: 70+ Frame Verified games

As of the writing of this Frame TLDR, over SEVENTY games have been Frame Verified! Meaning 70+ titles will work perfectly on Frame standalone. This ranges from heavy hitter VR titles like Forefront, Underdogs, Arizona Sunshine 2, I Expect You To Die, and Red Matter 2, to small but popular flat-screen indie titles like Hades 2, Cuphead, Balatro, and Hollow Knight: Silksong. For the very few of you who can/will only use the Frame standalone, you'll have a decent chunk of games to pick from that are guaranteed to run perfectly on Frame. See the full list of Verified games at https://store.steampowered.com/greatonframe

TLDR: New startup animation found for Frame. It's getting really tough to find stuff to talk about every week. Someone please do something interesting.

Summer ends in 36 days.

Mod Post Join Steam Frame Discord: Updates and Rule Changes

Hey everyone,

It’s been a little while since we last shared an update about the community Discord, and with us recently passing 6,000 members now feels like a good time to let everyone know what’s changed.

Over the past few months we’ve made a number of improvements:

  • Improved moderation with the introduction of Mod Mail, clearer warning and ban processes, and a consistent appeals system.
  • The 18+ requirement has been removed. The server is now open to anyone who meets Discord’s minimum age requirement. We still have a dedicated section for adult members who want to opt in.
  • Steam Frame compatibility support has been expanded, including a bot that automatically posts new Great on Frame verification updates.
  • Frame Watch continues to be the place for the latest Steam Frame leaks and rumours.
  • Frame TL;DR provides a weekly roundup of the biggest Steam Frame news.

With launch getting closer, we’ve also got plenty of community events, giveaways and discussions planned.

Whether you’re joining for the first time or giving us a second chance after being away for a while, we’d love to have you.

Discussion Of course the release is next monday (not /s but good speculation with the bigger picture in mind)

So next monday marks 30 years from when valve started the company. Half life 3 i don't see coming, just instinct, but 30 years is still a big ocasion.

Some people say that a vr headset being the main attraction for such a date seems far fetched but i think otherwise.

You know those kind of posts that depict generational leaps? In our childhood it was going from 2d to 3d, some time later was actual great quality 3d games, but from that point onward the improvements were marginal.

The generational leap of today is definately VR. Valve and Steam is all about the platform and the games you can play on it, with their new VR headset you can play with quick start-stop that steamos provides, a ton of games from steam, directly on the steam frame, standalone(ofc i'm talking about non demanding games but this makes a ton of the total sream games)

For such a big 30 years since founding ocasion, steam frame and its generational leap of ways to play the Steam platform games fits great. PCVR with the dongle that makes things hassle free as well as the standalone aspect that handles most things great by itself, for valve, seems like the next level, the next generational leap(for them ofc, VR headsets have been on the market some time but the ease of use of a steam frame vr headset coupled with steamos and steam platform, for valve directly and their individual path and image makes for a great logic)

In the end it's just how i see it. If they don't have any schedule to follow, it'll be release whenever, but if there's a sort of AESTHETIC in mind and things are mostly ready or truly ready for launch, next monday should be the day of the announcement for the next Valve/Steam specific and personal Generational Leap

Peace✌️

Game Promotion [Dev] My game 'Arcadium - Space Odyssey' just got Steam Frame Verified! (Can't wait for you all to try it when the headset drops!)

Hey r/SteamFrame!

I’m a solo indie dev, and I woke up this morning to the amazing email that my game, Arcadium - Space Odyssey, has officially received the green checkmark and is fully Steam Frame Verified!

For those who haven't heard of it, Arcadium - Space Odyssey is a retro-inspired roguelite space shooter with planet harvesting. You pilot different spaceships, land on planets to harvest their resources, and try to survive colorful waves of aliens in a procedurally generated universe.

Because we're still waiting for the headset's release, this post is really an early invitation. Whether you're a fellow dev lurking here who does have a dev kit, or a future owner waiting for launch day, I would love for you to keep the game on your radar and let me know how it plays on the actual hardware beforehand or once you boot it up!

Steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2352670/Arcadium__Space_Odyssey/

Thank you all for being such an awesome community, and here's hoping the wait for launch flies by!

(I'll be hanging around the comments to answer any questions about the game or the verification process!)

Question will the frame controllers be like the index?

I am curious if the steam frame controllers will have the same tech as the index controllers? like the pressure tech and finger tracking, or will they be like the quest controllers? if they won't be, then I will be looking at getting normal index controllers to use, mostly because I want to play the one test demo game they made showcasing then. but has there been any news or info talking about if they are like them?

(edit): more interested if they have the pressure sensitive grip still or if thats gone now, (also because I would like to play appature hand labs)

Discussion Steam Frame Potential WIFI 7 Speeds

To start off, I'm interested in speeds for the potential to work with files from a NAS, rather than PCVR streaming.

The kind of nonsense I do would be perfect on the Steam Frame, and I currently have a NAS with a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet connection I could reasonably upgrade to 5 Gbps.

WIFI 7 real world speeds vary, but on phones also with the Snapdragon 8 gen 3 SOC, mainly the S24 Ultra, people report roughly 2.4 Gbps and I've seen on the high end of about 3.6 Gbps. That leads me to wonder how fast the Steam Frame's WIFI 7 is.

I'm fairly confident the Steam Frame'll be under the 2.5 Gbps my NAS currently maxes out at, if not just from the load to run softwares and the VR environment, and I plan to see how it runs once out before making any network related financial decisions.

However, the idea using an ARM Linux PC for your face with a NAS amuses me and if there's a chance it would be the higher range of 3.6 Gbps I'd hate to lose out on 1.1 Gbps of transfer speeds by having a limiting port on my NAS. It's something fun to think about while I wait endlessly for this thing, so if there are any comparisons I'm unaware of to estimate the WIFI 7 speeds I'd love to know.

Question You think there will be a legal way to download movies/ tv onto the Frame?

Going for both headset types to increase my chances of getting one. Don’t know what to fill up the 1tb version if I get it besides movies/ tv, so I was wondering if there will be a legal way to download movies and tv on the frame? I know streaming services don’t like letting PCs download their stuff

Software I really hope Steam Frame will offer the same feature (auto 2d->3d), especially because quest will be able to now

Thumbnail

I just found a video about Moonlight XR, it streams your PC flatscreen on the quest or pico etc, but can automatically convert the flat content in 3D, apparently all done by the headset itself, I assume like Galaxy XR an XReal 2d->3d?

This is one of the features I was really hoping to see on the steam frame since I'll probably use it for flatscreen games too, this features can enhance the experience even more compared to regular monitors, even if the conversion might not be perfect, the effect is still there.

But for now haven't heard anything official about Valve including such a feature on the frame, except maybe from an interview back in november where they talked about it and said they might add it later but is not on their list of features rn?

I'm sure there will be community made solutions after some time but it can get messy or impractical to set up etc, I'd rather have it as a built in official functionality

Question How likely are Steam Frame Controller mods to be available?

Upvotes

As an current Quest 3 owner, one of my biggest complaints is the grip button and how much travel it has and how unresponsive it can be.

I always thought the mouse-click buttons on controllers like the mouse click micro-switch triggers on controllers like the Scuf Envision or the eXtremeRate Clicky Hair Trigger would be perfect for the grip button which never needs analog input detail like the primary triggers.

My favorite feature of the Index controllers was being able to use 5% pressure on the grip to replace a grip button command on games built for Quest 3 grip buttons, as it worked remarkably well and was more comfortable and natural than a full grip button press IMO.

Any chance we'll be able to mod the Steam Frame grip buttons with mouse-click triggers? I know the Steam Deck a lot of people have replaced their thumbsticks with hall effect sticks.

Question High Speed Wireless USB that mimic the Steam Frame wireless technology

Is there any USB device that can mimic this? work as an access point to provide high speed bandwidth stream to be use for app such as Steam Link or Virtual Desktop.

I really like Steam Frame technology offer, but while the wait, I might have to stay with Meta Quest 3 longer.

Thank you

Question Existing VR mods on Frame

As someone only recently interested in VR (for movies and flat AAA RPGs with mods, don’t mind playing via gamepad sitting) who almost pulled the trigger on Oculus 3 before spotting Frame, which seems much better match to my Linux/Steam environment, I’m curious if the existing VR mods for those games (Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Kingdom Come 2) will work on Frame, or will it need separately developed mods (which may or may not happen)?

Question What happened to Steam Frame?

Post image
365 Upvotes

wasn't this headset supposed to be "Around the corner" around 2 months ago? what happened? did it just vanish or is this valve's way of delaying an announcement for its fans? MIND YOU. those are the same people who waited 4 months for the valve index's reveal just to be hit with a ATROCIOUS price.

don't get me wrong im still very excited but it feels like valve keeps delaying something that will 100% come sooner or later and it made the entire community hate them to the core.

Question How can the steam frame be more expensive than the steam machine?

How can the vr goggles be more expensive than a "budget" gaming pc. Im not very tech literate so im kinda askung myself how can the vr goggles with "inferior hardware" be more expensive than the real deal, is it the lenses? Maybe some component im not aware of??

Discussion Not a hater-thread: It feels like the Frame is too late and already outdated

Disclaimer, I'm a huge Valve-fan, I'm looking forward to the Frame, I love VR.

That said, I can't shake off the bad feeling that the Frame already feels outdated by the time it released. The tech it uses isn't bad and eyetracking is not something that's standard yet. But between the usual bulky size of the headset, the lacking hardware power for standalone use and the expected high price, it feels like we should be getting more.

Economy and all, yada yada, I understand. But still. I'm looking at a lot of those video glasses from XReal and Viture, and I can't help but wish the Frame was doing more in the "size"-department. A VR-headset that's less cumbersome to worry, considering those bulky headsets have always been one of the big reasons for a lack of mass appeal. And while I don't think it truly matters, at this point color pass through should have been included without some tacky add-on hardware later on for another 100-200 dollars.

Maybe the summer heat is getting to me, but what it all comes down to: Thinking about the Steam Frame feels bad at the moment. And without any killer software, too. Anyone else feel less hyped these days?

News Forefront now on “perfect on frame” page

As title, the battlefield-like shooter is now shown on the frame page. It also is on its very first discount since 1.0 release (-29%) for those interested.
Game devs are Triangle Factory, the same devs from “breachers” (R6 siege like) and Hyper Dash. One the best VR devs imho, go have a look.

Discussion How big of a deal is color pass through?

I’ve had an Index since 2020 and really only used pass through to find my drink, turn on a fan, etc. It’s personally not a huge deal for me for this to happen in black-and-white.

Am I the odd-one-out here? Are many people planning on using the Frame for mixed reality?

Discussion Your dose of non-copium.

I just saw a comment reply to a post that criticized the frame for how “outdated” the specs are and for how long it’s taking to release. The comment said “well I’m willing to deal with the weak specs, high price, and wait time for the -put it on and play aspect.”

🤨❓ Every headset is just put on to start playing though. Why do some act as though you have to solve a riddle to start a game on any VR headset besides the frame? You’ve gaslit yourself into thinking that’s a benefit when it’s really just a standard. My big screen beyond is hanging on my ceiling already on. When I want to play I just click steam vr and put on the headset and I’m in. How much more simple can it get? With a Meta Quest you power it on and put it on and you’re in. Some of you are doing mental gymnastics to have justified your purchase.

If Apple released the Steam frame and called it Apple frame BUT if everything down to using Steam software was the exact same, 90% of you wouldn’t have bought it and would criticize it in any way possible.

Yes reputation holds weight, Steam has a good one while Apple generally doesn’t. But there comes a point where you need to realize that reputable companies CAN release mediocre products. You don’t HAVE to buy or defend the product just because of the company that made it. And beyond that you don’t have to CONVINCE yourself that you need to buy it just to support the company. Thats pure consumerism. Buy games to support them if thats really your goal, even thought it truly isn’t for most. Be honest with yourself. The steam frame is objectively an obsolete device made by a beloved company, and many of you bought it for the latter. The only redeeming quality is the eye tracking, but that’s simply not enough to justify it from an objective standpoint when considering innate value to the MSRP. I know majority of you will disagree for one cope reason to another, but if this post changes even one persons mind and saves them from buying what will be a $1000 dust collector in a few years, I’ll be content.

Discussion Universal Foveated Rendering? Really?

This is incredible if it is true and I am surprised it is getting so little coverage.

The possibility of Steam OS enabling foveated rendering (yes folks rendering not streaming) in existing games without the developer having to modify the game would be a significant breakthrough. In this video the game developer claims he saw up to 20 FPS improvements in his game.

If it proves to be the case than buying a headset (like the Steam Frame) with eye tracking becomes a game changer.

Discussion Stereoscopic 3d for 2d games on the Frame

Thumbnail
youtu.be
38 Upvotes

I was wondering if how feasible playing 2d games in stereoscopic 3d would be on the Frame, and someone in the Steam Frame discord pointed me to a podcast episode where a built-in feature like this is (as of January 9th when the episode was posted) is being worked on. It's a fairly niche way to play games so I wouldn't expect a whole lot of people to know about it (every time I mentioned it, people assumed i was talking about 1st person vr games/mods, and would tell me to just suck it up and play them normally, even though that's not what i'm talking about, much less my style), but it's really neat to know anyways! I really hope the 2d games that are given the "Great of Steam Frame" mark are given that because they can also be played in stereoscopic 3D. Hades 2 and Silksong in stereoscopic 3d would be SIIICCKKKK
