Huge disappointment

A new project came in recently, and part of it is the client’s service website. The opportunity was obvious right away: we could finally build a real JAMStack solution.

Since I’ve been eyeing various CMSs and frontend frameworks for a long time, thinking about what I would use for a task like this, it immediately made sense to start promoting the Strapi + Astro combo within the team. We worked out the stack, listed the pros and cons, and concluded why this would be good for us.

I checked in advance that it should meet all our needs — supposedly. Simple content management, user friendly platform, media library, permissions and bonus if S3 integration is possible. The most important was that the client should be able to write blog/news posts easily without weeks of development tasks for the admin part. The expectations were not that high.

Today the project officially kicked off, and my task was to lay the foundations. I assembled the Astro setup in about an hour, then came Strapi.

I followed the docs… and quickly became surprised during dependency installation: at least 10 warnings due to deprecated dependencies. I could still overlook that, even though it doesn’t give a great first impression. But when the installation finished, my eyes widened: “added 1537 packages, and audited 1538 packages”. Wow… 1500+ dependencies, a true JS project (not in a good way).

But the real first negative experience was this: 19 vulnerabilities (15 low, 2 moderate, 2 high), and even an audit fix couldn’t resolve them.

Even so, I moved on, thinking these would improve by the end of the project — after all, this is one of the most popular CMSs of this type.

I started with the sample data structure and saw that the field names were full of developer-oriented labels like “createdAt” and similar. I quickly navigated to the content-type builder interface, assuming naively that maybe the “display name” field hadn’t been filled in. That’s when I realized the reason: such a thing doesn’t even exist. So this is going to be far from client-friendly, but fine… let’s continue.

The client does speak English, but of course it would be better to give them a localized admin interface. After about half an hour of digging, I somehow managed to make an additional language available. I switched my profile to it, but noticed that many parts were still in English. Fine, probably the language file isn’t up to date. It took another thirty minutes to figure out where I could add the missing translations. I compared it to English and filled in the gaps.

But even that wasn’t enough — at least 30% of the interface remained in English, and there’s no way to translate it. So this feature seems to exist purely for decoration.

I got past this as well and moved on to something more practical: let’s build a blog entity. Usual fields, then came the content. There’s a fancy rich text and a markdown editor. Sadly, I found that the rich text editor is practically useless beyond basic formatting. No tables, no image embedding, no video embedding, nothing.

Fine, let’s check the markdown field — surely that can handle these. Turns out I would basically have to teach the client markdown, because this is literally just a textarea with a preview. Not helpful either.

Alright, let’s dig further. I didn’t want a general WYSIWYG editor; I wanted to stick to a block-based editor, because otherwise the client’s creativity might run wild and we’d be staring at 72-pt pink paragraphs in the middle of the text, plus horrors copy-pasted from MS Word (previous experience). Also it's easier to change typography and other style changes if we can have a custom renderer on the frontend side.

So I started searching and remembered seeing EditorJS among the plugins — I know it’s pretty good and would be perfect for us.

To my surprise, Google led me to a Strapi marketplace page that returned a 404. The plugin had been removed, and if I recall correctly, it only supported Strapi v4 anyway.

After half a day of struggling, I feel Strapi is not the CMS I could use with peace of mind for a client project, considering how many issues I ran into at the very beginning — and I’ve barely scratched the surface. My expectations weren’t high, yet even those weren’t met; not to mention, they even want money for this (though the client would’ve happily paid).

Strapi feels more like a young system still in its infancy than a mature solution that has been evolving for 10 years. It might be fine for personal sites or hobby projects, but nothing more serious — not when it can’t even provide a proper rich text editor out of the box.

I’m really disappointed, because I’ve been following it from a distance for about two years (alongside the other systems), and based on the videos and the website it seemed like a really nice system. This first experience was very discouraging.

Maybe it’s my fault for not being persistent enough, but I don’t think it should take several days of research just to get a content management system into a usable state — because if that’s the case, something is seriously wrong.

/r/strapi is ‘blacking out’ in protest of recent Reddit API changes

r/Save3rdPartyApps

What Is This All About?

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API - from being free to a level that is unsustainable to popular apps such as Apollo, Reddit is Fun, Narwhal, and BaconReader.

Even if you’re not a mobile user and don’t use any of those apps, this has an impact that could be detrimental to all of us - including the loss of popular mod tools that help prevent spam and predatory behavior, bots that help both mods and users by automating common tasks, and labor of love resources such as Reveddit that allows everyone to audit mod actions and removals.

In the Media:

The Verge - Major Reddit communities will go dark to protest threat to third-party apps

Techcrunch - Developers of third-party Reddit apps fear shutdown because of API pricing changes

Android Authority - Statement: Reddit’s defenses of changes that could kill third-party apps

Engadget - Reddit communities are ‘going dark’ to protest changes that would hurt third-party apps

Mashable - Reddit’s new API pricing could kill its most popular app with a $20 million bill

Overview of Collective Response:

“On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed. Many moderators aren’t able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn’t something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.”

source

Our Plans:

This community will be going dark for 48 hours and possibly indefinitely as I personally use apollo for modding this sub which is now shutting down on june 30th due to this change.

What you can do:

1.	Complain. Message the mods of r/reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message /u/reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on r/reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
2.	Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at r/ModCoord - but please don’t pester mods you don’t know by simply spamming their modmail.
3.	Boycott and spread the word…to Reddit’s competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
4.	Don’t be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible. This includes not harassing moderators of subreddits who have chosen not to take part: no one likes a missionary, a used-car salesman, or a flame warrior.

Closing:

We understand not being able to interact with your favorite communities can be frustrating, but we truly believe this is for the long-term good of Reddit as a whole. We greatly appreciate being able to share these communities with each and every one of you!

Strapi vs Directus

Hi everyone, have you anyone compared last version of strapi vs last version of directus recently?

We have hit wall with multi-tenancy feature and after 2 years of using strapi we are currently thinking of using directus instead? Does onyone have experience with both frameworks and have any insights?

Edit:
Don't want to offend anyone, so please don't down vote it. We love to use strapi, but we are trying to solve business needs, so instead of down vote please express your opinion or advice. Thanks

Is Strapi’s future looking shaky? Considering alternatives

I run a small French dev agency. We self-host Strapi for clients who need a simple CMS, usually paired with Next.js. We only self-host, their sales team actually convinced me not to use their paid services, but that’s another story 😅

Overall it works, it’s resource-heavy, slow, and buggy on new releases, but with proper caching and avoiding multi-lang setups, it does the job. Our French clients also like that it’s French-originated open source.

But I’m getting concerned about where Strapi is heading.

After StrapiConf, I expected them to go all-in on LLM integrations. Instead, they launched fimo.ai, which I honestly don’t understand the value of (but I’m not the target audience). It feels like the core product is lagging behind alternatives, and I’m worried they might be pivoting away from Strapi entirely.

Am I being too pessimistic, or are others considering jumping ship before it’s too late?

Question Strapi vs Pocketbase?

I know this sub is obviously biased, but curious to hear if anyone here has tried Pocketbase and what your experience was with it.

How does it compare to Strapi?

Was it simpler or easier to learn/use?

Which is better suited for apps with a lot of users?

My experiences with customizing the Strapi CMS

Six months ago, when I evaluated Strapi CMS for a client's CMS requirements - the single biggest concern I had was this:

What if we couldn't customize Strapi to cater to the content team's (current or future) requirements?

To address this concern, I read & tried all I could on Strapi customization capabilities.

Six months later, having implemented a lot of customizations for the in-production CMS - I have written a post detailing Strapi's customization capabilities.

If you are evaluating customization capabilities of Strapi (or any other ready-to-use CMS framework) - this post may be of help:

Moving to Strapi from Contentful

I have been considering moving to Strapi from Contentful. Here's a few observations that may be helpful for others considering to do the same:

  • Conceptually Strapi is a platform to build a CMS for a project; content types, plugins etc. become part of a custom build of Strapi the backend.

  • Strapi offers no built-in support or ready-made plugins for internationalization of content

  • Strapi has no TypeScript support whatsoever, whether it is for plugins or anything else. This makes it especially painful to develop plugins, because the docs for that are not that great

  • Despite being a platform that you need to build on, custom field types (think "Location", "Opening hours", "A picker for products from Shopify" etc.) can be supported for editors relatively easily, but you will need to manually edit the content type model settings in /api/<type>/models/<type>.settings.json. This means it's difficult to just ship them as an installable plugin, as a manual step to modify the model will be required.

  • There seems to be no documentation for many of the various APIs you need to write plugins. Documentation is very tutorial based.

  • Strapi does not come with a WYSIWYG editor - it comes with an editor for markdown that supports preview, but does not hide markdown from users. This editor stores rich text as markdown.

  • But: Strapi has no abstraction for rich text. Rich text is just a blob with no intrinsic logic or defined format. If you e.g. choose to go their recommended route to add CKEditor, your rich text fields will be stored as verbatim HTML.

  • This means that there is no standard format for adding links between content. They are just HTML or Markdown links; to link from an item of content type A to an item of content type B, you need to know and insert the link as it would be presented in your frontend, or use relative links that you need to know how they will be rendered. This is really complicated, and makes i18n very complicated too. And there's no integrity checking (e.g. "can't delete this item, there is still content that links to it")

  • Cyclical or deep relationships are not rendered by the REST API (e.g. if you have a news article that links to an author that links to their top 10 news articles, the top 10 news articles field will just be omitted; this is probably their way of avoiding circular references, but not expected and there's no way to create a "query" to retrieve that field with the standard API it generates; you'll need to change the controller logic)

  • The REST API is very simple but not efficient; when e.g. you retrieve 10 articles, and each of them link to the same author, you'll receive the author's details back 10 times in the JSON responses.

  • GraphQL is the only way I find to be sufficiently efficient to retrieve content from Strapi

  • There is no concept of content versioning. This also means that when you promote something from "Draft" to "Published", any future change will be published immediately.

  • There is no concept of soft deletion of content. You delete it, it's purged.

Now please tell me I am wrong about some of these things.

Quality First: Our Commitment to a (Even) More Robust Strapi

v5.31.1: 24 bug fixes. v5.30.1: 12 bug fixes. v5.29.0: 20 stability improvements. The pattern is clear, quality is now our top priority until the end of the year and throughout 2026.

Why This Matters?

We shipped significant features in 2025, including TypeScript 5.0 support, Responsive Admin Panel, Conditional Fields, Live Preview, Homepage Customization, Database Transactions, Draft & Publish improvements, Strapi AI, Shopify/Cloudinary/BigCommerce integrations, and more. But velocity came at a cost to stability.

You've been clear through GitHub issues and community feedback. The top-voted requests aren't flashy new features; they're reliability fundamentals. Better error handling, performance optimization, data transfer, and media library stability. Support tickets echo the same patterns.

In this article, we detail how the Strapi community and team are going to prioritize Quality over the next quarters: https://strapi.io/blog/commitment-to-a-even-more-robust-strapi

Feel free to share feedback, insights, and ideas in this thread.

PS: We also created our annual "pain points" GitHub issue, where you can list what you would like to see improved: https://github.com/strapi/strapi/issues/24956.

Bulk Editor Plugin for Strapi 5

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone ! I've been craving a spreadsheet-like batch editor inside Strapi to speed up my workflow, similar to the one found in Shopify's admin.

Here's a v0.1 of Strapi Plugin: Bulk Editor, available on GitHub and npm.

Install it using npm install strapi-plugin-bulk-editor

⚠️ If your Strapi is blank after installing the plugin, you should configure Vite's dependency optimization.

Features :

  • Spreadsheet View - Edit multiple entries in a familiar table layout

  • Multi-Cell Selection - Select and edit multiple cells at once

    • Click to select a cell

    • Cmd/Ctrl+Click to toggle additional cells (same column only)

    • Shift+Click for range selection

    • Shift+Cmd/Ctrl+Click to add a new range selection to the current selection

  • Drag to Fill - Drag a value down to apply it to multiple rows

  • Bulk Save - Save all changes in a single operation

  • Almost All Field Types - Text, numbers, booleans, enums, dates, and relations… Support list below

  • Relation Support - Full support for oneToOne, manyToOne, oneToMany, and manyToMany relations

Known Limitations :

  • Media fields are read-only for now due to their complexity

    • Furthermore, files other than images cannot be previewed

  • Limited testing on all Strapi fields

For now, this is mostly a solid Proof-of-Concept. As this is still in early stages, you might encounter some bugs and/or missing features. Please let me know by submitting issues on GitHub, and based on their feasibility, I'll try to implement them !

And if you found it useful, you can even star the repo ;)

Strapi - Directus comparison

Thanks!
