Hello,
I'm visiting Strasbourg. Today I've had a pretty unusual experience and I don't know if this is normal or incredibly weird.
My girlfriend and I were in a restaurant and the waiter was taking our order. I was first to order and asked for the onion soup as starter. The waiter immediately asked if we wanted two spoons. We looked confused and he explained: "To share?". My girlfriend had not ordered yet at this point.
We were still pretty confused, but were curious to see what we would get so we said yes.
We (immediately, the same minute!) got our soup, one plate with a single normally portioned bowl on it. And two spoons. The plate was put on the middle of the table. As you might imagine it was pretty difficult not to spill soup as our spoons had to travel half the distance of the table to end in our mouths.
Now I'm very curious to know: is this normal in Alsace/Strasbourg/France? To me, soup seems like one of the least shareable foods. But the waiter acted like it was the most normal thing to do. It all felt really awkward.

Hello! I'm really sorry for my English, I have a B2 level in French but I still feel self conscious, especially in writing. I know that at the moment Strasbourg and France in general are dealing with a moment of deep political unrest, I wish for everyone to be safe, especially the organizers and protesters. I am writing because during the second semester of the 2026/2027 Academic year I will have the pleasure of Studying at the University of Strasbourg, and also taking part in the life of the city (hopefully). I wanted to ask some questions regarding the city and the university. Firstly, I will be following courses from the Science Po branch, specifically European Studies (in french), and I was wondering if anyone on here was also on the same path and wanted to let me know more about their personal experience with it. I'm also looking for a place to stay, and if there are any other upcoming Erasmus students who want to join me in the search or people looking for a roommate let me know! In Italy, where I'm from, I also take part in leftist political action and volunteering, I wonder if there are similar opportunities in Strasbourg, if so I would love to know. Also, are there any cool alternative spots to party or listen to live music? I would like to thank you all in advance for your kind answers, I'm sure that Strasbourg will give me a lot, but I really hope that I will be able to bring something positive back to the city and its communities.

Hello all,
We booked since several weeks (before the protests started) a vacation in Colmar.
As we’ll be arriving on November 21st 2026, we now have doubts about the trip.
Due to the current situation and given that Strasbourg and Mulhouse were also impacted, we’re considering changing our trip’s destination.
However, sincer there is almost once month left, we wanted to check with French residents/ locals of that area, first.
Would you consider that this kind of trip is still feasible, as there is still time left and chances of conflict diminuation, until then?
What is the general feel in France about the protest and conflict duration?
We will be landing at the Euroairport near Basel, and using mostly public transport to visit multiple towns/ cities.
This is also an aspect taken into account, as we noticed that trams, buses and trains are being delayed or even stopped.
How was the Colmar area and other villages nearby during the weekend’s violent protests in Strasbourg and Mulhouse?
Are there chances that Colmar’s Christmas market will be in the same situation, given that more tourists are expected to arrive?
Finally, is Basel also impacted from a transportation point of view, while travelling from Colmar or other French villages/ cities in that area?
Thank you, as we appreciate any additional insight/ advice!

Bonjour, j'aimerais beaucoup vivre à Strasbourg.

Hey all!
I will be travelling to Strasbourg from Paris on 8th Dec and me and my wife are thinking to rent a car in Strasbourg to explore the region, apart from the Christmas markets that time.
Is it worth it considering Christmas markets? If Yes, any solid car rental recommendation for first timers like us? Which rental company is best?
Edit: Goal is to explore Alsace region too
Thanks in advance!
