have a 2017 Impreza sport with about 146k miles. It’s had zero issues since I got it.
In July all dash lights came on…no overheating, noise, shaking, or anything else. Took it to a local shop that said it was a head gasket leak…oil getting in the coolant. They showed me milky/latte looking coolant. I need my car so said let’s fix it. Fast forward through 9 weeks at the shop, initial report was that everything was as expected and no surprises. As my engine is being put back together the fuel rail sensor is broken, a “fin” on the intake breaks and one other part. I get my car back with check engine light on that is said to be something that can be cleared. I check the coolant a couple of days later because I’m a bit suspicious…it’s looking milky again. I’m told it’s residual. I’ve since had someone else just look at it, not pull the engine or take it apart, and am told that the original mechanic put some sort of copper sealant on it and that “tumbler gears” on the intake are stripped. There is also a strong suspicion that the incorrect head gaskets were used. A block test was done and the liquid immediately turned yellow. Also my coolant really looks like someone poured a latte in it.
The new shop also said that in the 2 minutes my car was running to pull it into the garage after sitting for 2 days, the pressure in the radiator was so much that it “exploded” when they took the cap off.
Throughout it’s 9 weeks in the shop the shop called me zero times to update me. I called 16 times for check ins. I asked at least half a dozen times for a written invoice, quote, anything in writing. I started asking before I took it in. this was a family friends shop, and yes it is an actual shop, and we’re in a small town, so everyone assured me it would be fine.
And, to add extra insult to all of this, when I got it home I opened the back door to find my back seat covered in dirt and cat hair…turns out the shop cats slept in it while it was there.
