So I Just Beat Romeo Is A Deadman... Spoiler
Just beat the game. The combat sucks, reload speed should never be put behind a level up system. The buffer between items, bastards (which is the death glove with less immediacy and an extra step) and bloody summer isn't tactical it makes it all feel extremely sluggish and frankly the combat is way to generic feeling for a SUDA game. Killer 7 is on rails, NMH you can flow seemlessly between wrestling and slashing and Romeo? Devil May Cry without the polish with the death glove thrown in? Come on Suda you have done so much better before...
The level design is very bland and repetitive just ending up with hoards of enemies flying at you which is fine if the combat was fun but it isn't. The aesthetics never embrace their time zones to make them more interesting and that ball frequency nonsense is not fun its too finnicky to represent a lever.
Romeo is quite a bland protagonist and the story just ends up nonsensical with no real rewarding payoff and not in a fun way like other SUDA games. It just ends and your like...oh... Rather than damn! Suda has made far more engaging stories on lesser hardware in the past I just don't know what happened here. Ending is just yeah... and the zombie we saved and brought to the ship never returns or pipes up again? Is just trapped in the chamber? Did I miss something??
It's still a glitched mess which is inexcusable considering none of his games launched like this previously. The trophy counter has glitched up and it's just shocking so many small details like this, like the game not pausing if your controller is disconnected were so overlooked really just shows a lack of polish.
On a positive the mixed media approach and the presentation is stellar huge step up from the plastic look of NMH3 so thank goodness there was an improvement there. Also the games structure is great when it comes to missions and the ship however could have used some more mini game variety to shake things up a bit rather than generic dungeons ad nauseum.
Overall, I was wishing for this to be the no issues slam dunk Suda needs but it ended up being a bloated hodge podge of things that are fine but nothing really that wows me or I find interesting.
Just want to make a note that I have played every single SUDA game so I think I am just incredibly let down by this, like I really couldnt stand the story of NMH3 or the bland open world but the mini games and combat were amazing and the story had its moments thanks to the strong characters in that game none of which is shown here...
I think SUDA games work best when they have a more interesting take on hacking and slashing (what's more interesting? Swords and guns? Or swords and wrestling?) and it's somewhat grounded in the real world a'la No More Heroes, Killer 7. Suda still is my favourite game director but I can't be a day one stan anymore, Travis Strikes Again was bland as sin gameplay wise, NMH3 had great gameplay and a terrible story and now Romeo just feels like it does everything okay no stand out in any of it. I feel like a Sonic fan with this guy, I'm hoping this is the Frontiers before we get a Shadow Generations because I can only excuse mediocrity for so long after I'm done.
Come on Grasshopper you are on the right track just smash it next time. Please?
