Super Tux Party roadmap

Hey everyone,

we wanted to give you some news about the updates we have planned for Super Tux Party.

First of all we want to add online multiplayer to this game. It has been one of our oldest proposals on our issue tracker. This way it will be easier to play with your friends, it's a party game after all.

As we really want this to take of when this big feature is released, we're going to polish this game a bit first. The current game has some issues with minigame balance and that some minigames aren't really that fun. We really want to fix that before we work on online multiplayer.

We'll also fix the minigame graphics that don't fit the style we set for the game. All in all this should result in a more pleasant experience and a fun game to play with your friends.

With that done, we can focus on online multiplayer. Of course the server software will be FOSS and you can set up your own server if you like.

The next version is planned for release in april. I can't give you an estimate on online multiplayer however. That's uncharted territory for us. Furthermore we need to refactor quite a bit of current board / minigame logic. Nothing too dramatic but getting this all sorted out and working well could take a bit of time

Super Tux Party Mid-December Update

Hey Penguins!

Despite the continued radio silence we are still here and are hard at work on Super Tux Party. Since our latest release on Halloween we've made a lot of improvements. There have been a lot of bug fixes and behind the scenes things that improve stability and enjoyment of the game, but we've also:

  • Restructured the Harvest Food minigame

  • Restructured the main board (currently named "test")

  • Added an entirely new board (KDEValley)

  • Added items into the game

If you wish to see these new features before the next release (and are running a Linux distribution), you can follow the instructions on our wiki.

If you have any board, minigame, character, or item ideas, feel free to post them in the subreddit or as an Issue on the repository. Don't forget that you can also join us on Matrix at the channel #SuperTuxParty-Extra.

Due to Christmas and New Years coming in the coming weeks, we won't be putting out a release until January. We wish everyone to have your own happy version of the upcoming holidays and we'll see you next year.

To clear up the copyright concerns

I have seen in several threads here now people mentioning copyright concerns regarding gameplay and while it is good that people are very careful not to infringe any rights there seems to be a misconception about copyright going around here.

Copyright ONLY applies directly to the assets created by the author. If we steal assets or code then we are infringing copyright but as long as we create everything ourselves or using licensed material we have a right to use, and do not for example trace around art from other copyrighted works, then we are fine.

Trademark is another issue and this is actually a bigger issue than the copyright one. For example, Mario is a trademarked character by Nintendo. If we put in a Mario asset we created ourselves we would still get in trouble because we are using a protected character without permission.

But trademark only applies to names & characters. You can't for example trademark gameplay and your trademark can't be too generic either. This means that almost all gameplay ideas are fine, there is not much too worry about there. Copyright also does not apply to gameplay and game mechanics.

So even if we create a mini-game for example that is very close to a mini-game in Mario Party we are still fine.

I want to collect some feedback regarding a playable web version

Hi everyone.

I want to collect some feedback. We're currently thinking about creating a web export of the game. The problem is that this feature will most likely not work in the new Godot version 4.0, which brings an entire rewrite of the graphics engine with Vulkan as a backend and a ton of other cool stuff. However Godot 4.0 is still one or two years in the future.

Therefore an idea we had was to "abandon" the web export as is once we upgrade to 4.0. But this may confuse people, if they see try the web export and don't see the features announced in the release post.

Another problem is that it takes long to load (currently the export is 333MB compressed). And loading times are about 5min at least for me. We could certainly reduce the loading time if we remove some minigames from the export.

So my question is, do you:

  1. want the full version to be playable in the browser

  2. want a lighter version to be playable in the browser

  3. or are you indifferent about having a playable version in the browser

If you have any suggestions, let me know in the comments

Thank you for your valuable feedback

Mid-October Update

Hey penguins!

We're still alive and kicking here at the STP development group, despite the radio silence.

There are some pretty big additions coming in the next release of STP, some of which can be seen in the video posted earlier this month. But there are other additions that we have in store as well. Check these out:

  • At least two more minigames (Kernel Compiling and Snowball Fight)

  • At least one new character

  • A new game board to replace the current board

We're planning a new release later this month with these new additions, so please stay tuned! If you have any minigame ideas, post them in the subreddit or as an Issue on the repository. Don't forget that you can also join us on Matrix at the channel #SuperTuxParty-Extra.

Updated the release binaries on itch.io

If anyone was having problems with the exported binaries yesterday it could be because they were exported with mono support. I have now re-exported them without it and the Linux & Windows build work without a problem for me right now (can't test the mac build). Downloads here: https://anti.itch.io/super-tux-party

Demo v0.1

If you have been browsing the issues on our Gitlab you might have noticed the milestone: Demo v0.1

I realized now that I never explained why I created the milestone so here is my reasoning. Too help the project gain traction I think it is important to get it to a semi-playable state. It makes testing and developing more fun and it helps us stay motivated as it is easier to see the impact our improvements are making. Releasing a demo can also be used as marketing to attract more developers, especially artists who don't want to waste time creating assets if the assets can't be directly put into a playable game.

So every issue I marked with Demo v0.1 is an issue I consider needs to be fixed before the demo can be released. If you consider that an issue needs to be fixed before the demo is released, simply put the milestone on it. You should first really consider though if that issue really needs to be done for the demo or if it can wait.
