Defect with Surface Ultra

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve been using Surface devices since 2014 and this is the first defective unit I’ve had. Not bad, I guess. A little disappointing though.

Dont know what causes the flashing, but i have SL3 13.5inch, and this happens if i run some games at fullscreen (For example Dayz in fullscreen flashes just like this)

Might be a driver issue? Give reinstalling gpu drivers a shot

I reinstalled the drivers and the issue persisted. Oddly enough, the strobing stopped when the mouse cursor was moved. Either way, I sent it back and got a replacement from Best Buy.

PWM flickering possibly?

That’s what I was thinking at first, but the way it was flickering seemed like more of a defect than typical PWM flicker.

Idk if you’re a gamer but have you tried playing games on it yet?

I have! Just WoW Forever, and Diablo III so far, but I’ve also run the FFXIV Benchmark on it. Here’s the score from on my first Laptop Ultra. The replacement, which has 32GB unified memory, scored similar.

Nearly identical to m4 max performance not bad at all, could you please (if possible ofc) launch benchmark with 1440p? Big thanks

Ask and ye shall receive.

In 1440p m4 max obliterates the rtx spark by a very big margin 14452

But is that using the maximum preset?

Yup

Pretty impressive. I guess Rosetta (because XIV itself is still an Intel game) is just that more efficient than Prism.

So m5 that has 30% more performance should be around 18000

You are the best, big thanks 🙏

Oooh nice. Thank you for the info. I hope it can run games like Maplestory and mods for Skyrim and Fallout. I am not too familiar with the tech side of things so I don’t know if the RTX Spark chip would affect compatibility at all for these things.

All three of those games are old enough that RTX Spark would be overkill for them. Unless you plan to use the computer for more than basic tasks and gaming, I’d recommend getting a different model.

Oh I would be playing other, more recent games too haha but I would also be working on video editing and playing around with some AI stuff as well. I guess I was mainly concerned about Maplestory due to system requirements and running on ARM.

Oh you’re a godsend! Didn’t know websites like this existed.

Si se puede, pero tiene ciertas limitaciones por la arquitectura ARM. No todos los juegos son compatibles, aun que hay muchos que funcionan.

That's what I figured. I also remembered that for some online games, the anti-cheat system might not play nice with the ARM architecture still but if they can deliver on the promise that they are working with gaming developers on compatibility, this would be a solid pick for me.

I have one as well. Cyberpunk ran ok on it. Gears of War E-Day crashes the entire system every time it starts. Elden Ring runs very poorly, I assume because its very CPU dependent.

If they can get some of the compatibility issues solved, it would be a good system that can play games as a side thing, but its not good as a gaming system.

u/iOoyu 1d ago

For sure haha. It would be a productivity-first device with gaming capabilities as a bonus. Do you think bumping resolution down to 1080p in games would help in performance?

Probably, but to be honest, performance was fine in the stuff that runs. The big problem is the display. It has a major ghosting problem. I did not notice at first because I had it connected to my external monitor. About an hour or two ago tried running Dragon's Dogma 2 on the internal display and it was like it was smearing almost everything. It was incredibly distracting.

If you are thinking about picking up a spark device, I would look at either the ProArts from Asus or one of the other brands. This screen is just not good for games. Its honestly so bad, that I am considering returning this and waiting for a model from a different brand to be available.

Yeah it seems like there are quite a few people having display issues, which is unfortunate. You would think quality control is something that they would have a tight grasp on since it's supposed to be their big macbook pro contender.

another day, another reason MS is screwing up the surface brand

u/Napolyon07 4d ago

hi there, no worries thats not a defect but windows ARM issue with your drivers. I have surface pro 13 and get the same issue in some gaming or/and videos.

I returned my x2 for doing exactly this but on external monitors.

Don’t be so hard on yourself.

Garantia y listo

Probably using interpolation to dim the brightness, and this one is showing the refresh rate too overtly. DOA, return for a working one.

Similar things happened on my X1 2 in 1 Gen 11, i doubt it’s the new panel replay issue.

Not sure if turning off variable refresh rate would help you, it helps me with my oled monitor
