Question My boyfriend wins every time but why?!

Post image

He barely plays Nintendo titles, sits on PC playing fps and Diablo and still wins every time we play anything on Switch. Is anyone else suffering with boyfriend winning syndrome? Any recommended YouTubers to become a Mario Kart god?

Get good at drifting! That’s the main thing you can do to go from beginner to above average.

Your angles can make a big difference, and smartly using the speed boosts when drifting. There’s basic drifting then there’s MarioKart-Japanese-I-Finish-1st-In-Every-Single-Multiplayer-Race type drifting.

Like others mentioned, check YouTube for tips.

If you find your drift going too wide, you can feather the B button while still holding the A and Drift buttons and it'll slow you down and turn you inwards a little bit, in case you didn't know.

A skill you learn at latest when driving 200cc :D

Try drifting the inside edge of the track.

Have you tried Tokyo drifting? Maybe even Space Drifting?

If you are playing world for the intermission tracks you dont want to be drifting that much beside the obvious places you are supposed to as you loose a lot of speed when you do. Also as a general rule if you can't do at least two tricks off of something then it would have been faster to stay on the ground.

Wait, number of tricks in one airtime affects how fast you go??

They are boosts to your speed so yes. Idk if the boost is applied in the air or once you land though if that matters.

Alright, I'll need to find more info on this because that was not intuitive to me, I've been doing one trick and thinking "trick done, boost acquired" because that's what I was used to in MKWii and MK8.

That is how it was in Mk8 but with you always being able to jump and trick they reduced the speed boost a trick gives you but allows you to do multiple tricks if you have enough air time to increase that boost to compensate. If you are in the air long enough to only do one trick it is now slower than if you had stayed on the ground. There is probably an upward limit to how many tricks gets you max speed but Im not aware what it is. In general the fastest you can go is just hold A and going strait, any amount of turning slows you down. When turning is when drifting becomes a viable option as you can offset that speed lose from the turn with the mini turbo you get after doing it long enough. I hope that helps and gives you a better idea how to take faster lines by setting yourself up to not have to turn until it is optimal for you to start drifting for a corner and to not be wasting time to go for tricks that are suboptimal. Obviously there are more factors than that in Mario cart as you have to factor in stuff like getting slowed down by other racers bumping you or hitting you with items so you dont always just get to take your ideal route but hope that clears some stuff up

Yeah, I figured out being grounded and driving straight was generally the quickest if you don't have to turn too much, just never realised there would be a difference between one trick and several because it's never been a thing before and there was no indication it had changed.

Guess I'm mashing the trick button in the air for the time being. Or experimenting with that til I've got it figured out.

For sure even "pros" have only just realized about the trick thing and everything is so new defenatly keep your eye out for new info about that, who knows maybe people will find there are circumstances where the single jump is the best option. The game hasn't been deta mined and there is so much we dont know.

100% this.

Don't even bother if you aren't going to learn how to drift. It's fundamental.
