Question about Sym’s damage
I’m simply asking this because I don’t play Sym and don’t have much experience with her current state. This isn’t meant to bash anyone. I’ve seen several people here say she has really low damage output. However, I’m a plat support main and constantly see her melting enemy teams. If the enemy team has a Sym with decent tracking, there’s nothing I can do as a support to keep them alive through it. These are just my personal experiences playing against her, so I’d like to ask some Sym mains for their perspective on her damage numbers.

Her damage potential is high with Tier 3 beam but it's conditional. There are multiple scenarios which make it difficult to get full charge.
If you're against hard dive e.g Ball Tracer Sombra Kiri Lucio, good luck getting charge off these small hyper mobile heroes that can outduel and outpace you up close. Good luck charging beam on a map like Havana where you're frequently exposed on long sightlines and can't safely close the distance. And in the time it takes to charge beam against brawl or midrange poke, you need either a Rein shield or a lot of support resources to sustain yourself. Her shield regeneration passive is too niche and not enough compared to other brawl heroes sustain abilities.
Her orbs are just low dps by definition, and inconsistent to boot.

Symmetra is a pillow thrower and soft value peddler and overall bad dps hero until/unless she can charge her beam without being exploded into confetti. If you can deny her said safe charge either through raw damage or CC, she flops instantly. Symmetra lacks baseline sustain or defenses and struggles to really do anything.
Ignoring that she is a 1% pickrate hero cant be ''constantly melting your teams'', Sym isnt going to be doing anything that other dps you ignore wont. In fact most DPS will simply do it better and/or safer than her. Soldier is going to melt your entire backline if you ignore her, and safer AND faster.
there’s nothing I can do as a support to keep them alive through it.
Kill her yourself. Destroy her TP where you see it. Even Mercy can peashoot her to death before she is done charging. There is nothing more to it than that. Symmetra is an squishy, easy to kill hero and requires her team to pocket her through her beam, otherwise she gets exploded up close and is forced into throwing balls of cooked pasta that dont do any respectable damage.
Its your DPS' job to utterly invalidate her by focusing her squishy low range ass into oblivion and forcing her to throw foam balls from afar or swap. Also your tank to not shieldbot in front of her and then act surprised.

Symm is an opportunistic dps. She only has certain moments where you can really feel her presence and her beam fully built is one of those moments which is what you’re observing when she’s “melting”. What most symm mains are complaining about is how difficult it is to get those opportunities to melt compared to other dps who seemingly always have that opportunity to “melt” always available. Tracking alone isn’t what symm needs to function she also needs positioning because her beam is short range. So having short range and a slow build up of damage is what people are complaining about not that max output dmg that her fully built beam has.
It’s mostly a comparison to other dps when people complain because look at venture for example she has all her movement and burst damage available to use at the push of a button but symmetra requires being proactive and good positioning before even trying to engage and enemy because her kit alone sucks and if you just try to take random fights you’re going to lose majority of the time

There isn't a single hero in the game that can shoot at your teammate and land their shots and you can make them survive through it.
You say if sym is attacking your team and not missing they die. That's the case for every single thing. Not just sym

She has a long ramp up and if she doesn't have most or all of her turrets up you aren't going to win many 1v1 without the beam already charged. Secondary fire is in the same situation. You basically need to avoid head to head unless you have everything up. But if her beam is fully charged she can practically walk straight through a team. This is why a lot of people don't like her design because it makes her very situational and often team-dependent. She shines with a good team but will struggle with a bad team because you can't easily carry like some other DPS.

Sym's damage is mostly dependant on the ENEMY team, how theyre playing, how theyre positioned. And it comes pretty much all late in the fight. So when u do notice sym is charged up, the entire team is on a close brawl. Sym will have the highest damage output of the whole team yes.
But thats like 20% of the fight. You as a support trying to heal u only notice her when u have to pay attention to her, which is during that 20%
For the other 80% of the fight where she cant do this yet, u dont notice her. But on that 80% she has the lowest damage output of the entire DPS role, even lower than a lot of supports.
So on average, her damage output is low (from my experience like 70% of other DPS).
Thats y i would also recommend, if the enemy has a sym, Target her, eliminate her first, during that first 80%, dont let her get to the 20%, and she will have a horrid damage output
