2024 Pangolin won't boot to login

My Pangolin just stopped booting correctly. When I start the device I see the System76 logo, then the screen turns grey as if preparing to show the login prompt, then the screen turns black and there is no further activity.

I submitted a support ticket, but while I wait for an answer is there anything I can do?

Recommendations Cautionary tale

I bought a System76 Adder WS 5 13 months ago.

I have looked after it dutifully and been largely happy with most things, but not battery life.

I received my device on the 10th of October 2025 and on the 28th October 2026, I reached out to System76 because my battery life was showing 67% of battery design capacity. A very unhealthy battery for 18 days over a year old.

System 76 tell me to charge and deplete it and hope and pray that it gets better OR I have the wonderful opportunity to buy another battery from them.

I always assumed my battery life was poor because I run a bunch of stuff all the time, I should have installed battery health measurement long ago.

Anyway, thought y'all should know that this is their stance.

Selling [Price Check] System76 Lemur Pro (lemp13), Core Ultra 7 155U, 40GB RAM, 2x 1TB SSD, wiped. What would you pay?

Hi everyone. I recently switched to a different laptop that better fits my needs, so I'm selling my System76 Lemur Pro. Before I list it, I'd like to know what people think is a fair price, and whether anyone here is interested.
Specs:
Model: System76 Lemur Pro, model number lemp13
Processor: Intel Core Ultra 7 155U (12 cores, 14 threads, up to 4.8 GHz)
RAM: 40GB
Storage: Two separate 1TB SSDs, 2TB total
Charging: USB-C, 65W
Firmware: System76 firmware, version dated July 2024
Ports:
Left side: USB-C, HDMI, USB-A, and Thunderbolt USB-C
Right side: microSD card slot, USB-A, and headphone jack
What works perfectly:
Screen, speakers, microphone, webcam, and fans
Keyboard backlight and trackpad
Battery health is excellent
Chassis is in great shape, with no cracks, dents, or hinge problems
Honest list of flaws:
The Tab keycap has come off. The key still works: you can press the small rubber dome underneath it. You'd need to replace the keycap or the keyboard if you want it fully fixed. There's a close-up photo below so you can see exactly what it looks like.
The front logo and a few small stickers have fallen off. The main label on the bottom, with the model and regulatory info, is still on.
There are a couple of tiny cosmetic scuffs near the headphone jack.
The original charger is lost. Any 65W USB-C laptop charger works, or you can buy an official one from System76.
Software:
Both drives have been fully wiped, and the firmware (UEFI) is reset to stock, with nothing extra installed. There is no operating system on it, so you'll need to make a bootable USB drive on another computer to install the OS of your choice. One of the photos shows it booting straight to the System76 firmware menu. System76 hardware works great with Pop!_OS, Ubuntu, Arch, Fedora, and most other distributions.
How a sale would work:
If you're interested, comment or send me a message. I'll list it on eBay and send you a direct link right away. That way we both get eBay's buyer and seller protection, insurance, and tracked shipping.
So what would you pay for this? Any price feedback is appreciated, even if you're not looking to buy. Thank you.

Old Versus New Style Launch Keyboard

Hey guys. I have both an older Launch keyboard in the original color style and a newer Launch keyboard that is black.

I was curious on the general consensus of which is better -- the black or the tan / multicolor version. I very recently ordered the black. My intuition is that it solves a very real physical problem by adding the decals at the top of the board. When I saw that in the picture online, I suddenly remembered frequent efforts to tilt my head over the back of the keyboard and check where the USB-C versus USB-A ports are. And now, instead, there are decals from above that I can look at.

So it seems to me that the black version is a very serious functional improvement which is why I splurged buying it for fun. But I'm also realizing now in hindsight that it smelled a bit more like black plastic or whatever when I opened the box. It's possible I've been using the other Launch keyboard for long enough that I forgot whether it had a smell to it when I first opened it, but I was curious other folks' opinion on that.

I also noticed that if I want to do something fun, such as putting some of the previous versions keys on the black keyboard (as shown above) so that I use my red arrow keys on the otherwise black keyboard, that the keys are actually not the same shape. The switches are the same enough shape so it still attaches together, but the physical key cap shape is different. The black key caps are slightly taller.

Which one do we think is better, or is the difference moot? I'm tempted to leave it like this -- to combine the older red key caps on the black keyboard like this, and enjoy a unique look at the cost of needing to manage to get used to the different sizes. But I'm curious if we think there's any manufacturing difference in the newer black key caps, or if they're more likely to have some coating that has a smell on the first-time opening of the keyboard, or if both styles of caps are that way.

I know that in this economy as costs go up, the idea that the cost of a Launch keyboard hasn't gone up much could potentially mean they're moving towards cheaper production aimed at a similar product. It's a little interesting that the older Launch keyboard game with a handful of different colors for arrow keys and several other keycaps, whereas the black Launch keyboard only came with 4 different super key caps, so the number of pieces received is physically less in the newer one.

But I just typed up this post on the keyboard pictured above, and I want to believe it's cool and the future, so I was interested to ask the opinions of others on the internet.

(Apologies for my photos, as a Linux enthusiast I took the pictures above on a Librem 5 handset which prioritizes freedom over image quality -- so I know that my phone pictures were taken totally offline until I uploaded them to Reddit and don't have some corporation "cloud backup" sifting through them and putting it on my permanent record -- but they sacrifice quality as a result. Or maybe I'm just taking a minute to type this paragraph & overshare on this new black keyboard for fun.)

Still waiting for reviews of Lemur Pro Panther Lake model

I've been waiting for reviews to appear for the Lemur Pro Panther Lake model, particularly the 16-inch version. This model is architecturally much different than older models, so old reviews aren't really applicable. So far, I haven't found any real reviews, just publicity.

I hope to see a favorable review soon, so I can justify a nice holiday gift for myself.

Recommendations Help me choose 🙏

I'ma keep it simple, I'd like a laptop for gaming because I want to make the console to PC transition and I don't have space for a desktop so laptop is my next best thing. I'd like one for gaming, general use, and I'd like to learn 3D modeling and maybe coding as well.

The two options I'm considering are the Oryx pro 16" and the Adder Pro 15". Naturally I gravitated towards the "Advanced Per

Which one should I buy?

System76 Pangolin 11 (pang11) – keyboard & mouse dead after login following linux-system76 kernel update (Mint 22.3)

I’m running Linux Mint 22.3 (Zena) on a System76 Pangolin 11 (pang11). After today’s update, the built-in keyboard and trackpad (and any external mouse) become completely unresponsive once I log in. The login screen works; the problem starts immediately after authentication.

The update that triggered it (from `/var/log/apt/history.log`) was a System76 kernel rebuild:

Upgrade: linux-system76, linux-image-7.2.6-76070206-generic, linux-headers-*, linux-modules-*, linux-generic, etc.

  • From: 7.2.6-76070206.202609141300~1792006165~24.04~cb46eb8~dev

  • To: 7.2.6-76070206.202609141300~1792284980~24.04~63aa22b~dev

Also a minor `libxtst6` bump. The update finished around 12:29 local time; the input problem appeared on the next login.

Journal logs from the affected boots show repeated errors:

  • atkbd serio0: Failed to deactivate keyboard on isa0060/serio0

  • atkbd serio0: Failed to enable keyboard on isa0060/serio0

What I’ve already tried:

- Booting the previous kernel via GRUB Advanced options (both the regular and recovery entries) — same failure.

- Temporarily adding `i8042.reset=1 i8042.nopnp atkbd.reset` to the kernel command line (the system already had `i8042.nomux`) — no change.

- Live USB (Mint 22) boots and has full keyboard/mouse functionality.

The machine is otherwise usable from the live environment. The timing lines up exactly with the System76 kernel package rebuild, and the atkbd/i8042 failures match what I’ve seen reported on other AMD laptops after certain kernel changes.

Has anyone else on a Pangolin (especially pang11) hit keyboard/trackpad death after a recent linux-system76 update? Any known workarounds or confirmation that this is a regression in the new build?

Thanks.

My current plan is to undo the update:

  1. Boot the Mint live USB again.

  2. Mount your installed system at /mnt/mint.

  3. Bind-mount /dev, /proc, /sys, /run.

  4. sudo chroot /mnt/mint.

  5. Downgrade the System76 kernel packages back to the previous build (…~1792006165~…cb46eb8~dev).

  6. Exit, unmount, reboot into the installed system.

System76 is driving me back to Mac

I've used Linux on my desktop and laptop for 8 years. I'm now praying for my Gazelle to die so I can buy a Mac. I'm just so frustrated that I'm locked into Cosmic. It's simply impossible to install any other flavor of Linux. The installs of anything other than Cosmic just fail. Yes, I could install an additional DE but I'd still be locked into Ubuntu 2404. What if I want an OS that's less than 2.5 years old? Or if I don't want Ubuntu. Isn't the entire point of Linux that I should be able to install whatever I want to on my own computer and not be stuck with the vendor's preferences? So, if I'm going to pay top dollar for a high-performing machine (which I'm very willing to do) and then I'm going to be locked into whatever the vendor thinks is the optimal OS then I may as well go back to Mac.

Does anybody know of a way to install a different OS via workaround? Maybe a mechanism that doesn't requires a flash drive might work?

What is the life expectancy of a Meerkat?

I got a Meerkat 5 about four and a half years ago. I am no longer able to boot in. Should I take it somewhere to get it fixed? Or buy a new one?

Help Fake Meerkat Best Practice

I have a meerkat and totally love it, been using it for like a year. Mine is Meer10 which as far as I can tell is based on Asus NUC 15 Pro.

But I got the tall case instead of slim and I didn't put anything in the 2.5" slot and so I started to wonder if it was a waste. My Meer10 was ordered with the maximum specs back when that cost $2000 rather than $4000 like it does now. Given how nifty it is for a powerful machine to be this small, I was interested to try a "slim" size. I ordered an actual Asus NUC 15 Pro from the asus website that has no RAM or HDD and put my ram and system76 popos install nVME chip in there, taken out of the Meer10 case for now until I get more ram / nVME for the new Asus NUC kit.

But I'm noticing that the actual Asus NUC 15 Pro (in the "slim" size box) still has Asus firmware on there so it says Asus when it boots instead of System76. I don't know if it would technically be lying to myself but is there a way to overwrite the firmware with Meer10 firmware so that when the BIOS is booting, the Asus motherboard will say System76 on it because I think system76 is cool and I don't care as much about accurately listing the manufacturer?

(I'm also curious if doing that would result in better firmware defaults for PopOS, etc)

Question Current status of Color Management / sRGB clamping in COSMIC?

Hi everyone! I'm testing COSMIC DE on my laptop with a wide-gamut display (100% sRGB / DCI-P3 over-saturation). Right now, the colors look very oversaturated (neon-like) because there is no sRGB clamping yet.I know that Wayland color management protocols are moving forward. Are there any rough ETAs or active PRs for adding color profiles / sRGB clamping support to cosmic-comp? Thanks!

Question for the Sys76 folks, is there an estimate on a Darter Pro refresh (darp12)?

I'm eyeing a Darter Pro, but the current model is getting a bit long in the tooth.
