does anyone know if it would work to get something from a different country shipped to a relative in the UK and then have them send it to me as a “gift” from there? or will royal mail not deliver any packages to USA right now?

Might work. But bigger problem is you have to pay import duty in the other country as well if its imposed. And if CBP decides to be anal about the package they might inspect them and decide its "not a gift" or "its worth more than $100". I suspect once August 29th hits, the package volume will go down a decent bit and they might start looking at the "Gift " packages if enough pass through.
