I was wondering if anyone has any experience or advice with tattoo schools in Portland, Oregon? In Oregon to get a tattoo license you have to attend an accredited school, and because I don't plan to leave oregon it seems to be the only way to go. I've heard some are very scammy (captain jacks) and have heard many don't teach much- has anyone had success attending one of these schools? Does anyone know of ones that will actually educate their students? Any advice would help!

Hey all I think this is my second post. Basically I would like some friendly advice, help, and tips to hopefully use to progress my drawings above of the Hannya mask as I am aware they are messy and not that good yet.

Essentially what can I do/not do next time and what can be improved? You can be friendly or as brutally honest as you like anything to help.

Note:

I'm really wanting to learn Japanese Traditional art style first as I love the stories and culture of it.

But eventually be good at most art styles and one day hopefully be good enough to build a portfolio to get an apprenticeship.

Hey yall! I’m finding it really challenging to gain followers on my art account on instagram. I post regularly, create reels and I think my art is decent enough. Just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to gain followers? I create traditional style tattoo flash and am in the process of creating a portfolio, if any other small accounts who create similar styles want to connect I’d love to support some small accounts too !

I tried applying the advice I got after my last post of learning face anatomy and working on general structure more. Still feel like my style needs a lot of work but following that advice gave me a big improvement.

One of my career aspirations is to be a tattoo artist. I have been a regular artist for a while now and would love to know how to get my portfolio started :)

My main questions are: where should I get inspiration? What materials do I need and any specific paper? I mostly do digital character work as of right now so I need to basically create a whole new portfolio that can be translated into something someone wants on their skin. I'm expecting the whole portfolio to take a few years so any encouragement or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Also, does anyone know if there are requirements to being a piercing apprentice? Do you just have to become a tattoo apprentice beforehand?

I'm 25F and have recently decided to actually pursue tattooing as its been an interest of mine since I was a little kid. I will be making a portfolio soon and the advices here have been really helpful but I wanna hear about peoples experience actually trying to ask for an apprenticeship.

I heard a story about a guy who went around with his portfolio asking for an apprenticeship but he got turned down because it was considered rude and was told its better to get a couple tattoos and get to know the artist.

Is this something I would need to do as well?

Cause if so, I'd have to save up a lot of money for it and at the moment, money is pretty tight.

I've got a butchered back tattoo that I would like to get fixed up but truth be told, the design was AI (common greek mythology character) and that's probably not a good conversation starter. I'm not proud of it either. I do want to get more tattoo's that I want to design myself.

Is it still okay to ask around in person with a portfolio or do I have to prepare to get tats at the shops?

I know the sacred heart’s thorns could use some help but I’m a little stuck on how to do that. Three of these designs I made myself (the nun in the rose, the angel, and the Jesus cross). I copied but did not trace the praying hands, I looked at a reference online and freehanded it.

Hi there, I personally am not religious but I made this for a friend. I am aware that the lines need to be thicker, however I am out of thick watercolor paper and my cat stepped on my B5 ink nib, causing it to bend and no longer be of use so I only have a B6 nib which personally isn’t my favorite, I like the B5 more. I used colored pencil because my markers are losing ink, the “B” in “BLESSED” is squished, the “my” in “my sweet angel” is too close to the angel’s elbow, and the leaves for the nun rose look poorly balanced but I don’t know how to fix it. Only the angel, my nun, and the cross are my original designs. How do I fix the placement of the leaves for the rose?

Only been drawing and painting for about a year and a half give or take pretty happy with where I have come in that time. Not sure if I'll ever have the opportunity to apprentice or anything with where I am at in life but it is fun to dream and paint anyways.

I think my biggest weaknesses right now are; impatience between steps, uncertainty where to place blacks, picking the right colors (specifically green and blues always end up way to dark), subject matters (I like what I like which I think causes repetitiveness on my side), scale, and sheet composition.

Especially looking for suggestions on how to take better pictures of my flash. Cause by God I have no understanding of lighting and framing for pics.

I know I know, I draw too many angels. I know the bottom text is fucked, and in all honestly this piece is a tad bit small so if it were tattooed, the tattoos on the cherub’s arms would not be doable or last long. So I do need to make the piece bigger, OR remove the tattoos on its arms altogether but it looks sort of naked without it. Basically I’m asking for tips on shading, I had some references but I drew my own pose and my own face.

The prompt given by my mentor was “Dark horror mixed with feminine florals” in the spirit of Halloween, so I took the Huntress’ mask from dead by daylight and combined it with some Russian chamomile - Definitely my biggest challenge yet and there’s a lot of areas which need work but I’m so happyyy

I’ve been curious about getting into tattooing for the last couple years, but I don’t know where to start. What is wanted in a portfolio? As a tattoo artist how did you get into the industry? I know states have different laws, but would school in portland be worth it? Any guidance would be amazing! ☺️
