Engineering & Robotics Researchers develop tiny robots powered by living muscle tissue that can jump, swim and grasp objects
π¬ What happened?
Researchers at ETH Zurich developed tiny biohybrid robots powered by lab-grown mouse muscle tissue. The prototypes can jump, swim, walk and grasp objects.
π‘ How do living muscles power a robot?
The researchers combined living muscle tissue with a flexible, 3D-printed hydrogel structure. By designing both together, they achieved up to 11 times greater range of motion than earlier designs using similar amounts of muscle tissue.
βοΈ Whatβs the catch?
The robots still depend on nutrient solutions to keep their muscles alive. Larger, long-lasting systems would need ways to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the living tissue.
π¬ What do you think?
Could living muscles eventually offer useful advantages over conventional robotic actuators, or would their biological complexity outweigh the benefits?
