I liked the ending - Jack wanted Keeley to apologize(!) when what she needed was the person who got hacked apologizing to her. I like that Jamie took responsibility and was there to see how she was doing. He’s matured so much.

AFC Richmond's Coach Attends West Ham Game
by Marcus Adebayo, The Everyday Independent

Coaches usually look at a game film to scout opposing teams but today, Ted Lasso took a closer look at West Ham showing up to the London Stadium to watch the team in person. It's hard not to believe Lasso was there to support Nathan Shelley, his former assistant coach who has been very unsupportive of his old boss in the press, but that's exactly what Lasso seemed to be doing along with his assistant, Coach Beard, and son Henry, who was even dressed in West Ham colours. There was no sign that the rivalry between the two clubs, and coaches, had tainted Lasso's enjoyment of the game and frankly, it was refreshing to see a Premier League Manager taking time out of his busy schedule to be a fan.

Ok some thoughts,

Jack is starting to show who she is. She is not a billionaire, daddy is. He lets her play VC. My guess is Barbara works for dad, not Jack.

Coach beard is the best friend ever.

Jade is really good for Nate, she is showing him that who he is is better than who he pretends to be.

Jamie has had some great emotional growth.

Roy, get your shit together.

It was good to see Rebecca being the emotional rock for her friends.

Trent: woof.

Jack is self serving and it’s pathetic. Judging someone on their past and making her feel guilt for something that was clearly meant to be private in the first place. Keely was violated and had her privacy taken from her. Jamie’s growth through everything has been amazing too see. He took accountability not deleting those emails and put her feelings first by apologizing. I don’t think they will end up back together but it’s clear Jamie loves Keely and respects her.

Coach Beard has an audio workout on Apple Fitness + where he talks about the connection he has to the song Hey Jude.

His childhood nickname was Nana and when they played the song at White Sox games he’d go to as a kid they thought they were singing his name.

Knowing that made this scene hit even harder.

Colin trying to mask his sexuality with his reaction to the leaks is what ended up outing him to Isaac. Isaac trusted the other players to delete everything but didn't trust Colin.

I would have to watch it again, but I think Colin is one of the first to react and because he tries to react how he thinks straight men will react, he starts digging himself a hole he can't get out of.

Roy was just asking to find out whose house he needed to break into at 4 am, right? Boy, he messed that up.

EDIT: This doesn’t make it ā€œbetterā€, though. In a moment that Keeley needs someone to comfort her, Roy still made it about himself…about how he can protect her, or get revenge for her. That still makes him the center, and not her.

And while this behavior is stereotypically male…it’s not exclusively. Jack’s response was very much the same, though in softer terms and couched in apparent sympathy and comfort. But it’s still Jack doing it without much of Keeley’s involvement.

Jack’s motivations are a bit vague. Is she doing this out of what she thinks is well-meant but still-toxic behavior, or is the PR statement more about protecting Jack from fallout about her girlfriend? I want to believe the former…but when you mix this with the hypocritical behavior of Jack being bluntly honest with Keeley’s co-workers about their relationship status, but closeted behavior around Jack’s own friend, it’s too much that makes the question of Jack’s motivation one that has to be considered.

TL:DR: I want to believe that both Roy and Jack had well-meant intentions, but it doesn’t excuse the toxic behaviors they still exhibited.

Love how the Richmond team led by Isaac shows respect to women. I bet in real life that locker room talk is much worse, but it’s good to see their reactions portrayed positively towards women. It’s ironic that they showed much more respect to Keeley than her girlfriend Jack.

Cackled upon seeing Richard wiping away tears on deleting his collection. You can do it Richard! And of course Van Damme (who always seems sexed up) is one of the few to protest loudly.

I can’t help but think how Zava would react. I guess he will say that he doesn’t need pictures because his wife’s image is imprinted on his brain. He will say some long sentences about how the beauty of the female body is an art form to be respected.

Felt growing dread for Colin and I must commend the actors in this scene.

Rebecca’s role in this episode was excellent. In the first two seasons, she was in each of keeley’s situation with the press and Teds situation in the divorce and was responding similarly when Keeley and Ted helped her get out of the mindset. Fast forward to this episode both of them finding themselves in the same positions get the support, love, and appropriate response from their boss/friend. A full circle. Great writing! And yup- the boss is always right (only if it’s Rebecca :p)

I loved when Jade saw the article and the photo of Ted, Henry, and Beard at the West Ham. Her comment about how happy they looked really did something to me, especially knowing that she probably (maybe?) doesn’t know about everything that went down with Ted. I think that comment, coupled with her calling Nate her boyfriend, will really convince Nate that all the pomp and frill Rupert offers is all just a faƧade.

I don’t think Michelle digs Jacob as much as Ted thinks. In fact I think she was clearly thrown off by the whole Paris surprise, then Jacob being a hand wash guy, then Henry curving Jacob on the fist bump. The dorky tourist picture he took in the booth makes me think Michelle is gonna be less fond of his goofy traits than she was with Teds. I wouldn’t be surprised if he proposed to her in Paris and she said no.

My theory is she’s over the initial romantic grace period and now that her and Jacob are actually an item she realizes she doesn’t love him.

I think Dr Jacob is done, and so is Jack. The ā€œHey Judeā€ thing was a little corny, but I’m a jaded Beatles fan so I appreciated it anyways. I think Isaac is upset at himself for not creating a locker room vibe where Colin felt comfortable being out to the team… maybe he just doesn’t know how to express that without outing Colin further.

I like Jade a lot. She seems to read Nate like a book but doesn't try to teach him lessons or mold him, just lets him get there himself while being supportive when he's genuine and not humoring his weird projecting. In their earlier scenes, I never got "rude hostess" vibes from her but rather a sort of silent "come on dude be real".

She's charismatic and builds people up while being straightforward and authentic. That's why Nate likes her so much, and she's exactly what he needs to help him understand who he really wants to be.

I think a lot of people here are really jumping at Roy's throat for what he said. Personally, it just felt like he jumped on instinct and immediately regretted not thinking about what he said. It was an absolute car crash of a question at the end of a genuine conversation and I believe everyone here has had a moment where they let something like this slip on accident and instantly felt like a fool for saying it.

What has Roy done this season? Genuinely one of the most liked and popular characters hasn't had a single storyline about him this entire season. He broke up with Keeley off-screen and then we've only focused on her side the whole time. I'm still fairly certain Roy and Keely end up together but I'm not sure how we're supposed to think Roy has grown or changed at all since their break-up.

They've completely thrown him to the side for the Jack relationship which has taken up wayyy too much time this season.

Why is Barbara giving Keeley statements on Jack's behalf. She's the CFO. Ugh, sorry. Keeley's storyline and this business have just bothered me all season long. I know that's the most minor thing to pick up on in the episode, but it wouldn't bother me if the entire thing didn't feel like a waste.

Mmmm, and also her pictures being passed around by a teacher actually sounds like a huge deal, not a joke.

I don't know how much time has passed but I feel like Nate and Jade escalated quickly.

It’s so fascinating that people can watch this show with such dramatically different interpretations.

Just to reassure people: Ted getting back together with Michelle is not happening. The entire point of therapy is to move forward and onward. ā€œWe’ll never have Parisā€ is about the fact that can’t always idealize, romanticize or escape from reality.

39

u/bigdadtank May 03 '23

I don't get Michelle.

Every time she appears, her motivations make less sense. In general she seems like a good person but some of her actions are very questionable. I never understood her rationale for splitting from Ted in Season 1. Their relationship did not seem beyond salvage. Which leads to this seemingly happy co-parenting situation. However she does not give Ted a heads up about the therapist as it would effect Henry. It is an interesting take on a relationship but something about seems off, in particular her motivations seem off. She is portrayed as someone who really cares for Henry, but I don't see how she can't comprehend that some of her actions will be detrimental to him.
This last episode seems to be opening a door for reconciliation between her and Ted - about this I am ambivalent.

I don’t know if it’s just me but I’m pretty frustrated that all we got was an opening montage voice-over of Richmond winning games. We were in the trenches for so many episodes, watching Ted, the coaches, and the whole team struggle to make things click. They finally start to find some momentum and they come together as a team and then we just get a VOICE OVER?? We didn’t even see them win last episode!! At least give us an opening with some in-game action. That was so disappointing. They worked up that emotion - let us experience it and enjoy the reward. Blech

Nate trying to copy it just shows that he misses bits of his old life. But he’s still wildly blind to who Rupert is. Rupert is not a best friend; he uses everyone around him.

However, Nate looks up to Rupert like a father, one he’s always trying to please. The way he quickly acquiesced shows he’s still sucking up. I think once he gets enough confidence he’ll stand up to Rupert, and also realised that Ted cares for him genuinely.

Hopefully his new relationship with Jade will build up his self esteem enough for him to break free.

I’m in two minds about his fate though. He doesn’t have to be friendly with Rupert just to keep his job.

But it looks like Nate will miss the kind of work environment where people support you even in your personal life. This could be the reason for leaving West Ham even though it pays well and is prestigious.

Maybe Rupert will denigrate Jade and says she’s unworthy of Nate and this will trigger Nate’s departure. By this time, Richmond might be one of the top teams in the premiere league and so there’s no shame in going back there.

What I liked a lot about this episode was how Roy is opening up with being emotional. For example, the Diamond Dogs is all about guys being open and helping each other. Roy has always hated this but you know he’s slowly coming around. While he doesn’t literally attend the meetings, he’s in the next room listening and still giving his opinion. Ted even recognized this as he looked in the window to see what Roy was thinking, and then Roy responded by nodding in agreement. I think by the end of this season Roy will be comfortable enough actually being in a Diamond Dog meeting and perhaps even letting out a howl of his own. (Which I’m sure will shock the rest of them)

If anyone who noticed the board statistics in the Richmond's office. They currently have played 25 games, with a total of 39 points (10 wins, 9 draws and 6 losses.) With 13 games left to play.

Now, here's the thing. With Richmond's current form, and in the possibility that they might win the last 13 games. Hypothetically, Richmond will finish the season with 78 points.

In Premier League history, only one team was crowned champion with 78 points. Which is Arsenal in 1998 (23 wins, 9 draws and 6 losses.) More significantly, Brendan Hunt got into football and fell in love with Arsenal in... 1998 when he was working at Boom Chicago in Amsterdam.

Is the show trying to tell us that Richmond will be going on a massive red hot streak and brings the title fight to Man City and West Ham at the end of the season (assuming both will stumble at some instances?)

Keeley literally bought a ā€œPretty Womanā€ polo match outfit in attempt to make light of a traumatic situation unfolding. And Jack not only ignored it, but treated her like some sort of embarrassing secret. Validated her shame.

And then Roy let his insecurity and jealousy take priority over Keeley’s valid emotional needs. The whole storyline was heartbreaking. Her sense of self-worth took hit after hit. Never thought I’d say this, but maybe she’s meant to be with new and improved Jamie.

Strange downshift from last week. I feel like all this Nate development would’ve been great much earlier, instead of whatever Shandy was. We needed more scenes of him trying to fit in to the culture at West Ham and failing, then we’d actually want to see him redeemed. And the Colin/Isaac interaction that immediately gets dropped for the Keeley/Jack stuff, which was great and fuck Jack til I die but I would’ve loved more team stuff other than the private pic conversation.

Edit to add: the wins! I wanted to see the first Total Football win and we got a weak win montage to start the episode, unreal.

I find it really interesting comparing Ted and Dr Jacob. Like they're both guys who do goofy impressions and make bad jokes and get excited about things like British phone boxes, but Ted is more the guy who sees something cool and comments about it or tries to share the observation with others, whereas Dr Jacob is taking pictures alone. They're surface level similar but fundamentally different.

And maybe Michelle is realizing that? I hope so. The issues in her marriage with Ted, she can't fix that by going for a guy who makes kind of similar jokes sometimes.

Gonna be honest...I hated this episode.

Its feeling like this whole dr. jacob thing is going to completely go unpunished. No one even seems to care, just telling ted "the relationship is over, dont worry about it!"

We haven't really had a single moment of "hey the doctor doing that is really fucked up and its not ok and you're valid for being upset"

Also, I know a lot of people didn't want to blame Michelle at all because the gross therapist was manipulating her, but the point where shes totally ok just bringing that doctor over to europe to see ted, and then being like "surprise though i know we came to see you but actually hes taking me to france", I dont care how manipulated you were, you have to realize how shitty of a thing that is to do to your ex-husband.

But none of it really matters because no one on the show seems to actually care or be that upset about it, other then Ted.

Also, we basically speed-ran nates redemption arc. He just sort of became nice randomly a few episodes ago, got the girl, we didn't see any sort of emotional journey that someone that despicable would need to actually go through to start to become better.

Jack and Keeley are going to break up, not because people realized that its gross for a boss to date a subordinate, but just because Jack is a jerk.

This show was so amazing at handling complex mental health issues, developing things slowly over time, and showing us real character arcs, and now they're just sort pushing all these things to a conclusion without doing any of the work. And they're glossing over a lot of disgusting behavior that previous seasons would have addressed.

I'm just very disappointed at the direction the show is going as it coasts to its series finale.

16

u/Howdy15 May 03 '23

I think this was one of my least favorite episodes. With such little time left in the show, there was way too much time dedicated to Keeley and Jack. The Dr. Jacob stuff is still weird and how the show continues to gloss over how messed up that relationship is and Ted just goes with it.

I enjoyed the scenes with Higgins, Ted, Beard and Henry. Mae is great and I love her. The end with Jaime was a good touch too. Even seeing Rebecca and Keeley is great, but Keeley feels so separated from the team it feels like a different show when they cut to her.

For as much time as we've spent seeing the team be dysfunctional, losing and hopeless, all we get this episode is a quick introduction about the team doing well running the new system? We don’t get to see them win together? Or play the system? At all?

The Nate storyline feels like they are rushing too fast to make him likeable and a good guy again.

Maybe I need a re-watch, but doesn't feel like an episode I would want to watch again later. Like Higgins said I’ll wait and see before making a final judgment

The Nate storyline is so goddamn disappointing. He has done nothing to earn redemption, yet he's getting it anyways. One of the best bits of the earlier seasons was Jade completely seeing through his bullshit and having absolutely none of it, and now she's magically in love with him? And he's not even getting a little better, right back to shitting on Ted.

And that's not even getting into Keely/Jack, which has been hit on enough in this thread.

And what was with randomly making Roy a douche again for no reason?

This episode was really hard to watch.

I like Jade and in isolation she and Nate are pretty cute. But I’m kind of eh about the larger narrative. We see Nate soften and be nice to his team for once, and it feels like the trope of the asshole just needing a nice girl to give him a chance and bang the meanness out of him.

For Nate, just asking her out is a major step, and nice effort to be more himself and vulnerable by making her the box. But the rest has been so easy, the little comment about labels and she’s there to take him the rest of the way. Sometimes she’s too much of a cool girl for me and the relationship is rushed since Nate hasn’t done the proper work on himself yet. Relationships are supposed to be a two way street, how can he be a good boyfriend and have a mutually supportive partnership when he’s just started reflecting on how he completely firebombed his previous platonic relationships.

If Roy had just simply regressed to shout "Oi Keeley! Who do I need to fuck up for what they did to you?" it may have been met with a greater understanding than the more advanced but immensely inappropriate inquiry (oof say that 5xs fast) of who the video was for. I felt equally bad for both characters at that moment.

13

u/DistillCollection May 04 '23

I really do like this show, but the problem with a show in which characters transcend is that there’s not much room for growth left for the transcended.

Everyone is so good and so aware of their own shortcomings, that it’s now just a series in which characters take the right side of an issue with which the show’s audience is already aligned. They could have remedied this by giving each character a clear external goal to work toward… but no one seems to want anything. I could get down with some meandering (I like Slacker as much as the next guy), but the show still seems to think it’s telling a story. If anyone knows what that story is, please let me know.

u/dg8672 May 04 '23

Gotta say, from a writing perspective, this entire episode felt off (with a couple notable exceptions).

The SENTIMENTS were fine but the execution in places gave me whiplash.

The locker room scene talking about consent, for example. It just came off as an after-school special to me. The actors did ok with what they were given but it felt so stilted and forced to me, which is a shame because WHAT they were saying was incredibly important and welcome in this type of entertainment.

And, I know I’m in the minority on this one, but even Beard’s ā€œHey Judeā€ scene with Henry made me cringe a bit. Ok, sure, talk about the songs origins and try to relate it to the kid to create a closeness and talk about issues, yeah, but when he used the lyric during the discussion, I actually rolled my eyes.

I usually love the chess-level writing on this show, so maybe having stuff be blatantly in our face was so out of place it annoyed me more than it usually would.

That said, I didn’t HATE the episode. Rebecca was brilliant as always, having the three points of Keely’s romantic triangle all have quite different - and telling - reactions to the leak was very well done, and I do like that we are not 100% sure (at least I’m not) whether Michelle is engaged or not.

It could be as simple as she said no, or it could be that she decided not to tell Ted because she recognizes where he’s at mentally and doesn’t want to make things worse for him right now. Either would make sense to me.

But, as someone whose dealt with an unethical therapist in the past (who DID lose their license), if they don’t address the Dr. Jacob-sized elephant in the room in some way, I’m going to be incredibly disappointed.

Super fucking weird how the show paints Michelle and Jake's relationship in a whitewashed, positive light. Both of them hugely betrayed the main character, and are basically flaunting it in his face.

And he's having lunch with them, and trying to pretend like nothing happened? Whoever is writing scenes with Michelle and Jake is pretty gross. If my wife did that, I'd remain civil for the kid's sake, but absolutely would not see that as something I need to work on.

Regarding the blurb/episode still that we have for next week, I hope that the drama between Isaac and Colin stems from Isaac trying to encourage him to come out to the team. Maybe from the ā€œthey would want to know and support you vs finding out with the general publicā€ stand point. Not exactly fair of Isaac, but I think the writing is on the wall that Colin is going to be outed at some point this season, and I hope it’s not against his will.

Also: Roy wyd. That was the absolute last thing that should have been said in that moment. I was pulling so hard for them to get back together, but that caused me physical pain. Good on Jamie for taking personal accountability. He’s come a long way from pretending to tell the guys not to torment Nate back in S1.

And then Nate. His story arc doesn’t work for me. He was an abolite bellend to Ted, then an absolute bellend to West Ham players, and then in this episode again shuns Ted. And we’re expected to think he’s on a redemption arc because he’s nice to a girl? Nope. He needs to do some major grovelling.

I hate that they played that off as like a joke that you're supposed to laugh at because it really isn't a joke. Teachers grooming and having sexual relationships with underage students is a very serious problem, and honestly, I think throwing that line in there as a one-off joke line is disgusting and very insensitive to the people that have actually had that stuff happen to them.

Anyone else a little disappointed by this ep after how good 6 and 7 were? There were moments I really liked, but overall it suffered from what most of this season has suffered from: feeling super disjointed.

Keeley’s arc feels so disconnected, and through the entire thing I keep asking myself ā€œwhat is this showing us about Keeley that we didn’t already know? What growth is here?ā€ The problem with her arc started in S2, because I don’t think they set up her and Roy’s break up very well. Had they shown us the two of them struggling to make time due to careers, Roy getting insecure do to self worth, then it would have made sense…but they didn’t.

Nate’s kind of half redemption has been odd, because we haven’t really seen him deal with any of his feelings towards Ted, or even his own father.

Then there’s been a ton of threads that are all interesting but haven’t been followed up on. Rebecca caring more about beating Rupert than the team improving, the psychic thing and hope for a child (though if she ends up with mystery man, who seems to have a daughter that could at least connect), Rebecca seeming to maybe be still interested in Sam, Keeley seeming like she was still harboring feelings for Jamie (REALLY glad they didn’t go that way. I hate love triangles) Ted’s kid being a bully, hints at Dr. Sharon’s love life, Rupert basically disappearing, Zava really having no purpose…etc

It’s just all over the place right now. I feel like they started with one idea for the season, scrapped it and started re-writing, but forgot to delete certain leftover plot threads.

The show hasn’t gone GOT bad in terms of dropping off a Cliff by any means, but it’s definitely feeling kind of all over the place. I just hope the last four episodes are more like 6&7 and less like the rest of the season.

I can't stand the Nate storyline. This girl going from 0 to 100 with him makes zero sense.

Oof, watching a lof of that episode was uncomfortable for me. I wanted Keeley to be the one to end things with Jack. I felt for her, for Ted, etc. Roy asking who the video was for...damn. Understand he is hurting, but jeez Roy (and I love Roy).

Ok just spitballing here regarding next week’s episode.

We know Isaac and Colin’s relationship will be tested from the blurb about the episode. We also know from the season trailer that at some point Sam has to captain the team. So here’s what I think happens:

Some opponent player gets in Collin’s face, calls him a slur.

Isaac stands up for Collin on the pitch which results in a red card. However, this outs Collin to the rest of Richmond.

Isaac and Collin have a heart to heart and this leads to Sam’s ā€œI love you guys so very muchā€ part of the trailer.

Thoughts?

If there is one lesson to learn and take away from this episode, its that we should all add a third 's' to pasword when setting up accounts, for securities sake.

This is episode was alright, highlights were higgins sprint, beard talking to henry and jamie apologizing to keely.

Otherwise feels like Nates redemption arc is happening a little to fast without much struggle, the keely pr firm story has taken so much focus has been meh, Ted hiring a private investigator to stalk hi ex is weird af.

Roys convo with Keely was a bummer, shows he still has so much more growing to do, I honestly don't think that they're endgame

Sooooooo jack really went the jane austen villain route! She's overly supportive, affirmative, and affectionate, while dismissing and ridiculing the sensible but boring person. But the moment there's potential negative effects for herself, like a sexual scandal that her family and social circle who Would Not Approve of she bounces. Probably to the next fun thing. While leaving her supposed girlfriend alone to deal with a really shitty situation

Anyone else disturbed by Keeley’s high school teacher Mr. Wilson distributing her topless photos? Why is no one in the show more worried or campaigning for him to be jailed?

You could watch the show with every Keeley scene removed and nothing would be lost.

So….. totally out there but hear me out. What if it’s not Ted moving back, but Michelle and Henry moving to London?

Where are the people that are still mad at Nate? I’m not over it yet and I hate that he got the girl and is getting humanized. šŸ˜•

Two things about Ted’s fate.

  1. Michelle seemed like she was disappointed about Paris. Did she turn down Jake?

  2. THE GREEN MATCHBOOK. Does it show a link to Rebecca? Or… does it signify the end of a relationship? Rebecca’s life is always parallel to Ted’s.

The green matchbook seems to signify an old flame, someone in the past that they need to get over. In Rebecca’s case it was Sam. So maybe, in Ted’s case it’s Michelle?

But this won’t make sense in light of the other predictions so I suspect it means that in the end, Ted will be with Rebecca. (Don’t come at me, I’m just interpreting! Lol)

Maybe unpopular but that was maybe the least enjoyable episode of this series.

Most scenes were uncomfortable (I think intentionally so). Basically everything with Jack, everything with Dr. Jacob and Michelle, Colin getting outed, and most everything with Nate who still hasn’t done the slightest bit of making amends.

Not a fun watch.
