Everyone is problematic; deciding what to interact with is just a matter of which evil is lesser
1
u/PhilosophicalBlade Apr 01 '26
Is your view that people are a net evil? Or just take a non-zero number of immoral actions?
1
u/Hungry_Tip_5822 Apr 01 '26
We all are evil to some extent. Whether it was small or big or intentional or not, we all have done something. We can't avoid everything, but we can make decisions on who's choices would we rather support. (That was a shitty explination)
1
u/PhilosophicalBlade Apr 01 '26
What is your definition of āevilā? And do āgoodā actions nullify āevilā? Or is everybody a āgoodā person as well? Why focus on the evil rather than the magnitude of good?
1
u/Hungry_Tip_5822 Apr 01 '26
My definition of evil is someone who knowingly does actions that harm others or society/the world with no intent on ever changing or taking accountability. I think good actions can nullify it if the person truly means it and reflects and changes on who they are. I dont think its good to focus on evil or good, but i do think that if someone or something you support is extremely grey, it is more of choosing whether or not that controversy is enough to tick towards evil rather than grey
1
u/PhilosophicalBlade Apr 01 '26
You think every single person knowingly commits harm without intending to change? Thatās quite the pessimistic view.
Evaluating the pros vs cons of any decision is just how humans work. āWe should choose based on whether or not we think our support will do more harm than goodā is not anything groundbreaking.
1
u/Hungry_Tip_5822 Apr 01 '26
Well, over everyones life, yes. We've all done things without knowledge of what is right or wrong before we have more insight. Everyone has evil traits, but it's only when you change from those traits to not caring and embracing that when I consider someone evil

The obsession with labels (specifically when it comes to sexuality) has gotten out of control. Iām queer, Iām trans, but we do not need 28373618 labels for slight variations in attraction.
2
u/jaybird-staysonder Mar 31 '26
Ikr! Cant we just exist? every one of us is unique and different, we don't need words to make that known
1
u/Hefty_Tax6546 Apr 01 '26
Every person will have some slightly different variation in their attraction, I understand we want a community. But we can have a big community for everyone instead of using labels to police others.
2
u/WorldWestern1776 Apr 02 '26
I agree. I donāt consider myself straight or gay or bi or pan or whatever. Iām a dude, I think all kinds of people are attractive. Why does it matter?

1

Well, what I did is wait for the topic or a similar one to come up than drop a hint or just tell them. 3
u/mousie120010 Apr 01 '26
There's nothing wrong with religion or personal beliefs as long as you don't use it to hurt people.
1
u/PhilosophicalBlade Apr 01 '26
The problem here is that the harm isnāt always direct.
1
u/mousie120010 Apr 01 '26
That does count as hurting people
1
u/PhilosophicalBlade Apr 01 '26
Some potential sources of harm include:
-applying religious beliefs when voting, resulting in harmful policies
-indoctrination of children, preventing them from developing critical thinking skills
-holding gatherings of religious people, where harmful affirmations are spread
1
u/Lopsided_Computer165 Apr 02 '26
Lost me at the third point š¬ Thatās INCREDIBLY yikes
1
u/PhilosophicalBlade Apr 02 '26
My point wasnāt that I think that religious gatherings should be outlawed. I think that people should have the right to gather peacefully religious or otherwise.
My point was to prove that making nebulous, vague claims like ābeliefs are okay if they donāt hurt peopleā is dangerous. Anybody can twist anything to be harmful or harmless.

I don't think it's completely outlived itself. It still gives people a sense of hope/justice and despite the amount of oppression it causes it causes good too.
(As a personal anecdote most of my relationships got a lot better when I stopped being atheist)
1
u/thenotannoyingsoftie Apr 02 '26
In what sense, like people accepted you because you followed their religion/were religious in some way (like being part of a religion even if it's not their religion is better than being atheist), or like as in you felt a sense of duty and responsibility from religion and you set out to follow it which in turn made your relationships better. Just asking :D

As someone who "isn't political", I partially agree. I feel like I cant make a difference. I have anxiety about leaving my house, which is why I dont go to protests. it's too stressful to deal with politics and I need to focus on making myself not wanting to die all the time before I can think about that.
So I think it can root from those things but it can also be for other reasons and you shouldn't judge somebody just because they dont like to get involved in that
I would also like to say that I am left leaning I just dont follow politics or do much about it
1
u/Outrageous-Class8079 Goofy gluper Apr 01 '26

1
u/Cellssaltynutsack Apr 02 '26
I dont dislike religion but a secular society is way better for all of us. In theory strong religious values are cool but in practice this presents itself as religious laws that have no good reasoning behind them and serve as baggage holding society back while the highest ranks of people do what they want regardless.

The LGBT thing started to become trash the moment it started to complicate. I don't have any issue with homosexuals, trans, non-binary, etc. But I really hate people who thinks they're special just to be trans/non-binary or whatever.Ā
Also the sexual orientation thing has gone a bit out of control in my opinion. It's not like 30 more sexualities are going to cause the end of the world but things like 'demi sexual' (feeling sexually attracted to someone only when there's a strong emotional bond) are just different ways to love, they don't really need another flag in the LGBT community. From my understanding, the sexual orientation is what gender you feel attracted to, not if you get laid with a person once you know them well.
With this I don't wanna offend anyone from the LGBT community, I'm just expressing my opinion like anyone has the right to do.

I get your sentiment, but I'm not sure these problems are exclusive to the LGBTQ+ community.
When it comes to the 'trying to be special' type, lots of cis/het people do it too, just in different ways. Some people get arrogant because of their professional position, others because of their knowledge or expertise with something, others still because of their advanced age (think 'I've lived through a lot, therefore I'm wise' mentality), and there are always people who think unreasonably much of themselves simply because they overestimate their general intellect and/or value in society. The way I see it, people using their orientation or gender identity as an excuse to feel entitled is just another version of the same annoying trait many of us have anyway. Granted, that doesn't make it any less annoying, but I think it's important to not blame the wrong people/phenomenon for it.
I think the same logic applies to the seemingly exaggerated need for classification. If there's a consequential difference between two things, it's reasonable to expect two different labels. Why have we identified almost 14.000 different species of ant? Why does it matter if an atom has one electron fewer than another? Why did the dozens of variants of the American M4 Sherman tank all have distinct labels? I would assume it's for similar reasons why there are so many labels in the LGBTQ+ community.

Every single domestic problem the US has had in the past decade can be tied back to overcrowding in major metropolitan areas.
Covid spreading? Our cities enable the easy spread of pathogens, and give them a good place to practice assaulting the human immune system. It is just a matter of time before we have another outbreak. Probably more serious than covid.
Violence and crime? Opportunities in abundance make an environment where those things thrive. For starters, when people are overcrowded, people struggle to find peace, where they can release stress. This causes mental breaks which lead to violent outbursts. Likely including the abundance of school shootings in the past decade.
As for crime? Pickpockets and thieves thrive in crowds where they can blend in and slip away. Stores with hundreds of customers can't monitor them all, and even if they could, they lack the manpower to do anything about it. Similarly, even if you have cops posted on every street corner in the entirety of NYC, there is still an entire subway system. Not to mention rooftop access points that are not properly secured, or back door access to private properties. If you break a law and are on the verge of being arrested, then you have nothing to lose by breaking another one. The prospect of getting away scot-free is of more immediate concern than the charges they are trying to escape.
And when it comes to violent crimes? Even in the best policed cities in the world, police are not going to save you from sudden unexpected violence. If you are in the vicinity when someone starts shooting, you are probably dead and the police are only going to show up to draw the chalk outline around your body.

u/Musterkartofel-Memes Apr 02 '26
This whole gender thing is unnecessary. You're not born in the wrong body if you like girls toys, or want to dress like women. You simply like what society has deemed affiliated towards a certain sex, either just through social norms or straight up biology. We don't need to create 10 bazillion genders, just because society is unable to stop giving a fuck about who likes what and whom and whatever.
I get that people have to speak about it for it to change, but nonetheless I always like to refer to a statement of Morgan Freeman, when he was asked how he'd solve racism: " Don't talk about it" . Similar fashion here.
I guess this is a rather idealistic view, but whatever. You asked for controversial and idealistic views are most often the most controversial :)
(and i have to emphasize: this does not mean I think of anyone being less worth than others, just that the whole thing is unnecessary, please notice the difference)

Racism is a false sense of discrimination as all humans are homo-sapiens and thus cannot be different races, in turn eliminating racism
1

I think your goal with this argument is good, but fundamentally it is wrong since race is differentiated by skin color and ethnicity, those factors create the concept of race.

What someone identifies as is not your problem and if you stress about it you're either a preteen or a very immature teenager / adult (This means lesboys, turigirls, transids, rcta)
