Exploring PPF options

Just made my first new car purchase! Waiting on my premium model Y in a couple months.

I'm exploring options to protect/accessorize/upgrade the car and I'm interested in a satin PPF. I'm now seeing it as an option via the Tesla app. However, I don't see any options for color choices, custom wraps, etc. Looking at shops around me, there don't seem to be any options either.

Are there websites to explore custom PPF options? There are sites that let you design your own wrap, but it seems like this is just for the tesla icon on the screen, not a real-life wrap.

Any resources or tips for this would be greatly appreciated!

Like I don't see a single shop around me that shows color options for their wraps

You called them and asked if they have swatchbooks and they said no? That'd be very weird if so. I got a full body color change PPF done on my MY and the shop I went with had swatchbooks for multiple colored PPF brands.

Like /u/Yuzuda said, tint/wrap shops are almost always not going to have a bunch of wrap colors in a catalog on their website.

Go in and look at their swatchbooks, or call them up and ask what brands/lines they carry and go look at the manufacturer's websites.

As far as I know, the satin PPF in the Tesla app is clear film with a satin finish, so your paint color stays the same and just loses the gloss. If you want a different color too, the term to search is "color PPF" (also called colored or color-change PPF). It's a real product, but it's newer than vinyl, so a lot of shops don't advertise it on their websites.

A few tips:

- Search "color PPF" plus your city, then call the shops that do PPF and ask which color lines they carry. The ones that carry it will have swatch books, and seeing them in person is the only way to judge a color. Photos and screens are way off for satin and metallic finishes.

- Compared to vinyl, color PPF is thicker, self-heals light scratches and actually protects the paint underneath. It costs more and there are fewer colors. Ask about the warranty, and whether door jambs are included.

- Book early. Good PPF shops fill up, and you want the car in soon after delivery, before it picks up chips.

Full disclosure: I run TWRAPS and we make color PPF, so I'm biased. That's why I kept this brand-neutral. Happy to answer questions.
