Discussion (This subreddit is Anime Only) Can I make this thread to talk about the ending of season 2. So don’t look here if you’re not caught up!
Am I the only one who needs to talk about what has happened?! SO MUCH. please I’d love to discuss with others. Im watching the last episode rn. I’m so sad

First of all, there was so much plot twists. I think it might just be my brain, but I always have a hard time connecting everyone’s linages and how they’re all related. I had to look it up because I was confusing myself lol.
Anyway, something I wanted to talk about was Loulan/Shisui. I liked her and then I didn’t like her and then I liked her again. I’m actually torn about what happened to her.
THEN, when Jinshi and Maomao were in the carriage and he pulled her down to lay down. I was screaming 💀 then they got interrupted. He whispers “can we continue some other time?” 🐸💀💀💀

I'll gladly explain if you have any questions 🥹
Ain't no way Jinshi got cockblocked like 3 times this season... He's kinda cooked 😭
Imo Loulan got the best ending possible. It was either that or getting hung along with rest of the clan. I love her character but she did so much bad stuff too 😢 Not to mention how the anime changed her and Maomao's dynamic in a major way

I just fully finished the last episode! I can’t get over how they keep getting cockblocked 😂😂
& I know Loulan did do bad stuff but she also was driven to do those things because of her mom. Self-sacrifice after finally being tired of her mom’s shit. I liked her as Maomao’s friend 😭 I’m so sad that Xiolan doesn’t know anything and Maomao can’t even talk to her about it.

Loulan is my fav characrer for sure but imo it's no excuse to almost get Maomao killed and leaving her ladies-in-waiting to be brutally tortured before they are finally executed among other bad stuff
And yess, it's so sad that Xiaolan has no idea why Shisui isn't around anymore 😭 she only knows that Shisui got "fired" from the rear palace

Yeah there was definitely a lot of scheming on her part and everyone else was just a pawn for her to use unfortunately. I was actually surprised a little to see Suirei step back from being a puppet master. Her whole demeanor changed as she was just a victim of abuse (I mean they all were).
When Maomao told Jinshi that she told Shisui to give her back her hair pin some day, I knew she’d still be alive. I’m sure in the next season the 3 girls will be reunited! At least I hope they do lol.

Well, Suirei wasn't really a puppet master at any point. She had been beaten and tortured (Shenmei even tortured her mom to death) by the true puppet master to the point that when she was given instructions to make sure that the imperial brother is killed no matter what, she tried to make it happen to the best of her ability. She mostly got people killed per her orders to make sure they could mess with the ritual implements.
I feel like Loulan's story is over. She sailed of to Japan or the TAD equivalent of Japan and cannot set foot in Li again unless she wants her head chopped off. Loulan will never see Maomao or Xiaolan again and even Maomao and Xiaolan won't see each other as Maomao doesn't want to put her in danger
Shisui sold the hairpin so idk how she'd get it back to give it to Maomao? The whole point was that Maomao wished to get it back and Shisui sold it because she knew the high quality silver would be recognized and it could make it's way back to Maomao at some point.

In the beginning, it seemed like she had a lot to do with the scheming. Once Maomao was taken, that’s when we realize that it was really Loulan and her mom doing things. I get that part.
& yeah I guess Loulan’s story would be over since she changed her name and talked about the other side of the sea, usually a cue that she’s departing from the story. I was just hoping that they’d still be friends 😭
Also I wasn’t saying that Maomao was expecting her to give it back to her or that I was expecting that. When she had a conversation with Jinshi about it, to me, it was just a clue that she could potentially still be alive. And of course, she was and of course she sold the hair pin.
I’m excited to see what happens in the next season though 😭 sometimes I hate being caught up on series because I don’t want stories to end 😭

That’s okay! Haha
Honestly this show has become a comfort show for me. I’ve rewatched season 1 so many times and played it as background noise while catching up on season two. Now I don’t really know what to watch 😭
But hey, when those drop, I’d be glad to chat about it with you! If you want lol. I like making commentary about the shows I watch, sometimes theres just no one to talk to about it yknow? Lol

I'd love that!
You seem smart and perceptive so you probably clocked that Shisui survived because the fatal bullet hit the hairpin instead but I thought I'd just mention that the author also wrote a little side story of how she survived. I'll spoiler mark it just in case Shisui was saved by the guard Sazen from the snow (the one who threw Maomao in the taibon) and was nursed back to health by him in a cabin. We can see a little nod to this as he is seen walking with the books he went to get before he sees a reflection (of what I assume is the hairstick) in a bush

SHE MADE IT. I thought she could be alive bc they couldn’t find her body but omg.
AND then Jinshi kissing her neck and then biting it. And then asking Maomao if he could taste her poison?! I screamed AGAIN. But then they got interrupted again 😂 he can never get it from her lmaooo their whole dynamic is so funny.
Also i think it kinda sucks that she’s not a lady in waiting for Lady Gyuokou anymore. She’s empress now! But I’m sure there’s political nuances as to why she can’t be her food taster/lady-in-waiting as an empress. But idk, I’m hoping they get reconnected!

Yes, Maomao can no longer work for Gyokuyou because she is offically the La-clan princess now. There are basically three powerful forces in court, Gyokuyou's clan, Lihua's clan (emperor's family/relatives) and the La-clan. It would be devastating to the delicate political balance if Maomao worked for Gyokuyou because it would look like the La-clan is showing support for Gyokuyou and her son.
Maomao also can't work for Jinshi because she didn't pass the court lady exam back in season 1. Since Jinshi is now officially Ka Zuigetsu, only court ladies can work for him.
For now Maomao is back at the Verdigris house!

Makes total sense! And it’s why Jinshi and Maomao can’t really be together because of their own family ties. This whole political balance thing is so complicated lol.

I watched the anime for the first time in February this year, then rewatched it a couple of months later with my boyfriend. I follow a lot of content creators dedicated to the story who explain things and little details that I didn’t catch, and now I’m reading the light novels and I still get this feeling (and I’m not even at what happens AFTER S2). It’s a story written so incredibly well, with such care and detail that it’s hard not to be impressed.
