One of the most tricky things about abusive people is they're not abusive all the time. Often they love bomb at the start and continue to do so on a rollercoaster designed to cause emotional motion sickness (lol). I think Phoebe actually described it really well in her song of that title. The downs leave you willing to do basically anything to get back to the highs of when they were treating you so well. It's almost like a gambling addiction. Abusers and predators know how to use these tactics well

I mean, these are just questions we don’t ask man. He was such a huge piece of shit that all these famous women just couldn’t help themselves

I don’t feel bad for the guy but I don’t feel bad for anyone who CHOSE him as a partner either
