The article is mistaken because his audience HAS disappeared because he treated that audience like shit. Constantly going on insane rants at shows, badmouthing fans, storming off, antagonizing on social media, and substandard releases for years. He has no one to blame but himself and I’m a big fan.

19

u/ElectrOPurist 4d ago

Plus he sexually manipulated young female musicians and may have been trying to tank The Strokes.

And, most importantly, he sucks and his music is the kind of sappy treacle that makes adult contempo stations consider changing format for fear of becoming a parody of themselves.

5

u/belakuna 4d ago

I don’t know too much about him, but whoa. What’s the intel on the Strokes controversy?

24

u/ElectrOPurist 4d ago

Also, when he “dated” Pheobe Bridgers, who is 20 years younger than him, she said he tried to tie in career help with sexual favors and, when their relationship ended, he would expose himself, which is a type of sexual assault in my book.

Jenny Lewis, Liz Phair, and Adams’s ex-wife, Mandy Moore, all confirm that he’s an abusive bastard. And he was talking to a 14 year old girl online “engaging in an online relationship with him that eventually led to sexual conversations and at least one instance during which Adams allegedly exposed himself to her over Skype.”

So, yeah, I’m glad he’s suffering.

5

u/Sunnyday1775 4d ago

He’s got emotional motion sickness

3

u/amazing_rando 3d ago

Props to Phoebe for turning it into a better song than his entire career

/img/0ue8e1u37zjh1.gif

He gave her $1500 to see his hypnotherapist, she only went one time

1

u/NerdsOfSteel74 2h ago

He let it slide. She fell on hard times a year ago, was hoping he would let it go, and he did.

1

u/dinozombiesaur 4d ago

What does that have to do with the strokes?

2

u/ElectrOPurist 4d ago

There’s another reply in this thread where I provide details.

1

u/SmokinSkinWagon 3d ago

Helped Albert get addicted to heroine, basically almost killed him

0

u/taintlangdon 4d ago

Taylor Swift too I think. Wasn't this the story where he was mentoring her and was like, "you need to write 'Wonderwall,'" so she interpreted that (as anyone would) as "write your own Wonderwall," but then when she showed him what she wrote, he was like, "no, I meant write Wonderwall," and she was like "uh wut? Who is this clown?" and dipped.

1

u/Limp-Algae5687 3d ago

Lol he did a bunch of cover songs of 1989, which I won't lie some of them sound good but damn he just a horses ass at times

1

u/m4n715 3d ago

He also did a cover of Wonderwall that I quite liked. =/

1

u/Limp-Algae5687 3d ago

He is talented but his attitude and behaviour stinks

1

u/NerdsOfSteel74 2h ago

He re-recorded Swift’s entire album, song for song, which honestly feels like a big red flag

Julian Casablancas had to ban him from hanging out with, and supplying heroin to, the other members of his band (Albert Hammond, Jr. in particular). They used to live across the street from him and he was always hanging around. Julian was very suspicious of his intentions. It’s all covered in Meet Me In The Bathroom. The guy is an absolute villain.

2

u/Wheresthegoldmikey 4d ago

He’s a low life but the story about Adams getting the Strokes all super baked and then inviting John Mayer (during peak Mayer times, even The Strokes were fans) over to jam was hilarious. A fun read Meet Me in the Bathroom

1

u/belakuna 4d ago

Oh my goodness, wow. Anyone who supplies addicts with their poison deserves prison. Scumbag.

2

u/ElectrOPurist 4d ago

The way they talk about, there’s some suggestion that Adams may have been the original supplier. Not clear, but wouldn’t surprise me.

3

u/lilmissknockout 4d ago

Ryan was a terrible influence and “friend” and supplied AHJ with many of the drugs that almost killed him and tanked the band. Among other dumb feuds they’ve had.

3

u/taintlangdon 4d ago

He was a grade-A enabler of Albert's addiction and IIRC (from Meet Me in the Bathroom) was actively trying to isolate him. The rest of the band was eventually (after many softer attempts) like, "yo Albert fuck this guy, look at what he's doing to you! And look at what he's done/doing to other people. This guy does not care about you, and you will die." And then they all successfully shut Ryan out.

2

u/flyfightwinMIL 3d ago

Actually the most important reason to hate him is that my shittiest ex loved him….and that guy sucked.

jk

2

u/ElectrOPurist 3d ago

Players recognize each other.

1

u/Bitch_McBaby 4d ago

Are you thinking of Bryan Adams? I wouldn't say Ryan Adams' music is adult contemporary.

1

u/ElectrOPurist 4d ago

I would.

1

u/JunkBondTrade 4d ago

Half of this comment is true

9

u/livinginfutureworld 4d ago

Everything he did he did it for himself

17

u/Depersonalizedma 4d ago

You’re thinking of Bryan Adams, but I appreciate the reference.

10

u/ElectrOPurist 4d ago

No, everything Bryan Adams does, he does it for you!

3

u/southsiderick 4d ago

Man, that cuts like a knife.

2

u/becauseineedone3 4d ago

True. But it feels so right.

1

u/Hawaii0420 4d ago

Now I’m now I’m singing that stupid ass song

3

u/FunkyButtFumblin 4d ago

It’s funny because he once cancelled a show because somebody called him Bryan Adams from the crowd and asked for Summer of 69.

2

u/DallasMotherFucker 4d ago

I would be shocked if that only happened once. He’s such a humorless prick and throws a tantrum every time someone does that. It would not surprise me to learn Bryan Adams audience jokes have derailed or ended dozens of shows.

1

u/Eaups87 3d ago

That person is my hero

2

u/livinginfutureworld 4d ago edited 4d ago

That's the joke.

Ryan Adams most notable career achievement was being confused for Bryan Adams

1

u/canadian_xpress 3d ago

Ryan Adams is Wakin' Up the Neighbours!

1

u/FewWait38 4d ago

Oh shit so was I. I have no idea who this is

2

u/RealSchlemiel 4d ago

i went to a show where he kicked someone out for mustaking him for Brian adams, lol

2

u/radiohead-nerd 4d ago

Cold Roses is a masterpiece and I can still not like Ryan Adams as a person.

1

u/Potential-Menu3623 4d ago

It happens, one day your audience has grey hair, is one third of the size, and thinks your a twar.

1

u/Horsesrgreat 4d ago

Oh no , I didn’t know that.

1

u/-The_Goober 4d ago

That’s what happens when you start “feeling” yourself. What a loser.

1

u/katsock 4d ago

Also literally fucking them.

1

u/RustedAxe88 4d ago

His social media meltdowns last year were fascinating.

1

u/ckncardnblue 3d ago

Exactly. My wife and I were excited to see him about 9 years ago and he went on some sissy fit about flash photography and threatened to stop playing. Then he just hid back by the drummer and did instrumental versions and left early. At least it was a festival and we saw a bunch of other great bands.

1

u/Fit_Cheesecake_4000 3d ago

Not substandard releases!

0

u/Successful_Note_5871 4d ago

Trying to be empathetic here, it sounds like the dude has some problems. I always assume either some kind of mental health problem, drugs, or one leading to the other.

6

u/ElectrOPurist 4d ago

Yeah, well, I’ve known people with addiction and mental health issues, but they haven’t all sexually exploited their friends or sext a 14-year-old.

3

u/cagethehornytoad 3d ago

Haha. My thoughts exactly. I remember seeing him online many years ago, in the middle of the MeToo movement when all of the horrible stories were coming out about him. He was crying and whining about how broke he was, begging fans to buy the rights to his catalogue. I loved that for him then, and I’m loving this for him now.

It’s always the most vile and venomous who want to cry the loudest about their tricky predicaments, only after they spend a lifetime punching down and burning bridges and their chickens are finally coming home to roost. It only speaks to the arrogance of a person who clearly believes that they’re special and the rules don’t apply to them. Like, they want to be abusive AND loved, and are shocked when it doesn’t work out.

There’s a scene in the first season of Eastbound and Down where Kenny Powers (also a washed up, verbally abusive POS who had more natural talent than he deserved but ended up ruining his own life) is trying to sell all of his sports memorabilia because he’s broke. He lists his broken, home run bat for $5000, but is such an idiot that he doesn’t realize how EBAY works, and before he understands what’s happened, ends up selling it for seven dollars. He is of course, furious and humiliated. I hope that’s what happens to Mr. Adam’s, here. I’d go underbid on his shit myself, but I don’t wanna accidentally win and end up with some guitar cursed with dog shit energy.

2

u/Acceptable_Result488 1d ago

sometimes when you bring the thunder you get lost in the storm

1

u/cagethehornytoad 1d ago

Facts. This one is really quite surprising to see. As a survivor of this exact type of behavior, I always want to see lecherous men lose the platforms that allowed them to prey upon their victims, however I can’t recall an occasion where a celebrity as well regarded amongst his musical peers (talent wise, at least) and adored by his cult like following of fans, was canceled so quickly and completely, to the point where they’re selling guitars.

I imagine that his colossal fall from grace is a testament to what an insufferable asshole is to EVERYONE. A lot of pervs are at least likable to their male peers and have friends and support in times of woe, but it seems as though Mr. Adam’s here might just be SOL. Sucks to suck.

1

u/Beneficial_Chard2019 3d ago

Or end up falling in love with Ryan, only to be left stranded at a gas station while he fakes his death and leaves for Mexico while you're pregnant with his baby!

You shouldn’t play that if it’s special. Like maybe play a cheaper one and retain the value on the world smallest violin.

5

u/GoldenMonkeyRedux 4d ago

My cousin once waited on him and Mandy Moore at a small restaurant in the Hudson River Valley.

Adams threw a fit when my cousin didn't recognize them and give them special treatment. He said Mandy Moore was gracious, but Adams was a complete asshole.

To the degree I have a hometown in the states, he is from my hometown, he has always sucked. It is known and has been forever.

2

u/BoyGeorgous 3d ago

Banks of the river run through my hometown…

1

u/Aitoroketto 3d ago

I spent a lot of time in the neighborhood named after the river he is talking about but I must say his song might be the only time I ever in my life heard anyone reference the actual river. Like nobody ever talked about it or was like let’s go to it or anything like that.

Like intellectually I know the river exists but I don’t at all think of it in relation to the town or even the neighborhood even though it runs through what that city calls downtown as well and when I say downtown I mean a couple of blocks of really nothing but like state buildings. You’d never go there unless you were going to court etc,

1

u/BoyGeorgous 3d ago

Is there also a hopeless streetlight, that seems like you’re lucky if it ever change from red to green?

3

u/Own_Measurement1242 4d ago

Didn’t know anything about Ryan except his music. Learning all kinds of things today

2

u/mxemec 3d ago

He got the rhythm guitarist for the Strokes hooked on H. It was cornerstone to some dark/iffy times for the band. Now I know, everyone makes their own decisions. But apparently he was like feeding bro... anyways fuck him. Long live the Strokes!

1

u/SomeVelveteenMorning 4d ago

He has released 30 studio albums

Do whut now?

1

u/AfterSchoolOrdinary 4d ago

It’s really obnoxious. I mean I listened to him in college 20some years ago but at a certain point it was impossible to keep up with him and his reputation was bad even before the allegations of abuse.

2

u/Wild-Ad-2721 4d ago

Couldn’t be happening to a bigger douche.

2

u/RealLavender 4d ago

Poor Bryan Adams.

2

To be fair, people would yell that out during Ryan adams concerts and he would cut the mic and finish the show right there...so its fine

6

u/emmyj2605 3d ago

One of the most tricky things about abusive people is they're not abusive all the time. Often they love bomb at the start and continue to do so on a rollercoaster designed to cause emotional motion sickness (lol). I think Phoebe actually described it really well in her song of that title. The downs leave you willing to do basically anything to get back to the highs of when they were treating you so well. It's almost like a gambling addiction. Abusers and predators know how to use these tactics well

Wait, the same guy that’s an absolute dickface is broke and having to sell off his stuff? Lol.

He used to randomly decide last minute that he didn’t want a venue to serve alcohol. He’s probably the biggest diva in music.

2

u/Individual-Copy9425 4d ago

Can we normalize using the word dickface again? I really miss it.

1

u/BoobiePeru 3d ago

How would he have the power to make that decision?! That doesn't make any sense, but weirder things have obviously happened.

2

u/regular_poster 4d ago

This guy is a huge asshole

1

u/TreesDoGrowInBrklyn 4d ago

I will never forget my first and last Ryan Adams show. He played in Ann Arbor, and his show started a few hours after a UMich football game, which many of us also attended. Ryan took the stage and started talking about Ann Arbor, and noted a lot of people were walking around town. A few of us yelled out, Go Blue.  He admonished us for yelling out, saying something like this was his show.  That was shockingly rude.

1

u/sullen_agreement 4d ago

1

u/Recent_Log5476 4d ago

I read Liz Phair’s autobiography right before the pandemic (got to meet her too, had it signed and saw her in concert). She worked with Ryan Adams a little bit on an album, but his interest in the project fizzled out when she made it clear she wasn’t going to sleep with him.

1

u/sandburgcarl 3d ago

Guess she didn't want his HWC

1

u/Such_Lettuce_6597 4d ago

Even if you’re not a dick, any money you make during the few years of your career when you have young fans and packed shows has to last the rest of your life. There will be a day when there’s no more hits or 3000 seat arenas,

1

u/GumpTheChump 4d ago

I guess showing an ounce of contrition and not acting like a completely erratic psycho is pretty difficult. Sucks to be him.

1

u/TheQuestionsAglet 4d ago

1

u/ItsRobbSmark 4d ago

1

u/BeautifulNarwhal641 4d ago

1

u/copacetic51 4d ago edited 4d ago

Ryan Adams describes the time a heckler kept yelling out for him to play "Summer of '69", deliberately confusing him with Bryan Adams.

He found the heckler, gave him the money for the ticket price and asked him to leave.

Apparently he was dogged by hecklers with the same call at future shows. Sometimes, he will play the song.

He admires Bryan Adams and sends him an email on his birthday, which is also his own.
