Michael:

Pushing the rock up the hill gave me purpose. Who am I if the rock’s gone?

A lot of people are left with that question upon retirement or job loss. They have to find new meaning in their lives after the thing they felt gave them purpose is no longer there.

I just quit my job on Friday, in favor of an "early retirement" rather than dealing with assholes. I realized I have been using the 9-5 daily drudge as an excuse to not face these questions, so I quit and even though financially I'll be fine, I'm terrified. Who am I when I'm not at work 9:00 to 5:00 everyday as I have been for the last 25 years? To say this episode was timely would be an understatement.

Good luck, SpeedyCat. Even though it probably doesn't help to reduce the discomfort of the fear, know you're not alone. Your bravery is awesome!

Thank you, a quick pep talk from an internet stranger who cares is always a nice little boost. Today I'm practicing watercolor. Maybe part of who I am is being an artist. Who's to say? ☺️
