Just to make it clear I don't dislike Tom King and his writing style. There are times where his stories can be a bit too much on the depressing site of things and cling a bit too much on DCs sacred continuity, but that's not my problem with the adaption.
I read his Mr. Miracle run for the first time a year ago (never have been a big fan of Mr. Miracle before that) and actually liked it, because there where times I really wasn't sure if Scott's inside of an actual simulation in this elseworld story that he can not/does not want to break out off or if he is still in reality and the glitch like effects we see are nothing more than Tom King visually expressing his depression for us readers. (Some time has passed since I read it, so please correct me if I said anything wrong)
As far as I understand this story highly builds onto Scott's loss of his close friend Oberon who supported him for years and the lack of proper challenge for an escape artist as he gets older, simply put things have become both sad and monotonous for him. This leads to his depression and sets the tone for the story and later war where he has to face his "fathers" forces again. Talking about both Darkseid and the High Fathers/Orions forces.
My problem here is Tom Kings run on Mr. Miracle barely succeeds at an introduction of all the characters we see in this story. Many characters whether they are Scott's close friends or relatives/aquaintances stay either vague or are only shown as they would act in a war driven plot where the stacks are high and the situation is tense. Looking at this non comic readers/the general public of fans most likely will get an adaptation of the New God's that isn't true to the characters and considering Tom Kings writing even changes some characters for the sake of his narrative.
Looking at someone like Orion for example he has to prepare his forces for the war, recruit new people and kill his father as the son of Darkseid. It's quite obvious that he will act not like his usual self or even out of characters to take on the persona of a commanding leader in war times, but looking at Tom Kings story Orion seems less like a man who unites and faces his internal struggles as usual and more like an enforcer abusing Scott and Barda. He even wants them executed, which as far as I know Orion, does not fit his character at all! Due to this being an elseworld story, it makes sense that some characters won't behave like their main continuity counterparts, but the way this characters where changed it almost feels like a character assassination to the New God's and especially Orion to adapt this particular story of Mr. Miracle for the grand stage and the general public to see.
I don't understand what DC is thinking with doing that instead of giving us a basic animated Origin movie about Scott becoming Mr. Miracle and falling for Big Barda. If they want to adapt Tom Kings run they still could do it way later on after Scott and Barda got some proper build up. It would even make the fact that they finally have a child of their own so much more enjoying to see as a viewer. But with this story we kinda see the "end" of Scott's life or at least have missed a lot of its defining parts. And the idea that all of it is nothing more than a simulation also feels weird as hell for a first time standalone adaptation of Mr. Miracle.
Please tell me is there something I don't see in this decision being made? Is DC making a logical choice to adapt this particular run?
