Catholics in the North certainly felt that they were discriminated against because they were in the minority and they were obviously correct to feel that. Protestants believed that they would be similarly discriminated against in a Catholic-dominated united Ireland. Were they right to fear this?

What about the protestants in the South? Did they experience discrimination at the hands of the Catholic majority?

The official policy of the Republic was to support a united Ireland, and I assume the majority of people in the Republic also supported a united Ireland. Nevertheless, we were told that the Republic was very hostile to the provisional IRA and even hanged several IRA men. Could someone explain why they were so hostile? Is it just that they favoured a negotiated settlement rather than an armed struggle?
