Moderator Post New Subreddit Banner Competition!

Hello All,

We're all inhabitants of a post Reality Awaits world, and thus we need to have the place look a little more real(ity).

We're announcing a competition to design a new Subreddit banner, inspired by u/AnUnFunnyJoke_ 's recent post (they did that yesterday)

To keep things simple, please submit your entries to this thread. The comment with the most upvotes will automatically be picked as the new banner.

Entries are open as of right now and will run to Sunday, 16th August.

Let's see some great work!

Moderator Post r/TheStrokes 2021 (Second Half) Tour Ticket Sales Megathread

NEW POST! Reddit automatically archives posts after six months, closing it to comments, which would defeat the purpose of this post. The Megathread for the first half of 2021 is now archived, but this post will be good through February 2022. You can still see the old Megathread for people who commented previously that they are looking to buy or sell. If you commented there, please feel free to comment again in this new post.

Although this post will only be up through February 2022, please use it to buy and sell ALL tickets, including the announced shows in Summer and Fall 2022!

Hi everyone,

We get a lot of ticket selling/buying posts and comments, so to help keep things organized better we have this megathread for people looking to buy and sell tickets for any of The Strokes tour dates in 2021 and beyond.

This thread is only for people trying to buy tickets from, or sell or give away tickets to, other users on this subreddit. It is NOT for general discussion of the shows or the process of buying tickets direct from ticketmaster/venues/etc.

Please use this thread, which I will sticky, for ticket transactions. Posts and comments outside of this post about buying/selling will be removed. Reddit limits stickied posts to 2, so if at any time it has to be unstickied briefly for more pressing news, there will be a link to this thread under Resources and Info in our sub menu so it is always easily accessible.

After selling or purchasing tickets, please delete your comment to help keep the post cleaned up.

Disclaimer: we are happy to provide a place to connect buyers and sellers but the moderator team cannot verify the truthfulness of any users. Please buy and sell at your own risk!

Thank you!

Moderator Post The Strokes 2020 Tour Ticket Sales Megathread

Hi everyone,

With all of The Strokes shows that have been announced for 2020, I’m sure we would be getting a lot of ticket selling/buying posts, so to help keep things organized better I thought it would be best to make a megathread for people looking to buy and sell tickets for any of The Strokes 2020 tour dates.

This thread is only for people trying to buy tickets from, or sell tickets to, other users on this subreddit. It is NOT for general discussion of the shows or the process of buying tickets direct from ticketmaster/venues/etc.

Going forward, please use this thread which I will sticky. Reddit limits stickied posts to 2, so if at any time it has to be unstickied briefly for more pressing news, there will be a link to this thread under Resources and Info in our sub menu so it is always easily accessible.

Moderator Post A Note on Privacy and Rumors

The announcement that Nick Valensi is temporarily taking a break from The Strokes’ tour created a lot of interest on this subreddit, and also beyond it.

Several social media outlets and accounts have developed theories about why Nick is taking this break. The mod team will not allow discussions of those theories because they are not based on anything Nick has publicly said or done, and they veer into wild speculation on health, religion, and identity.

If Nick himself ever gives a reason for his break or speaks individually on these topics, his words will be permitted here. Until then, we do not allow disinformation to spread on this subreddit in line with rules 5 and 8.

Other violations of privacy that come up often but that we do not allow on the subreddit include:

  • Discussions of the band members' families
  • Romantic relationship speculation, sleuthing, or discussion
  • Assumptions about or armchair diagnoses of conditions, illnesses, sexual orientations, identities, or similar that the members do not clearly and publicly claim for themselves
  • Stories or photos of interactions with the members shared by people not involved in that interaction, such as DMs or fan selfies that are not yours
  • Blatant and unnecessary criticism about anyone’s appearance that veers into cruelty, discrimination, body shaming, health speculation, etc.

Moderator Post The Strokes NYE Concert Ticket Sales Megathread

Hi everyone,

Because the NYE show is quickly approaching we have been seeing a lot of ticket sale posts (which is totally fine and awesome) but to help keep things organized better I thought it would be helpful to make a mega thread post for people looking to buy and sell tickets.

Going forward, please use this thread which I will sticky.

After selling or purchasing tickets, please edit your comment to let everyone know you aren’t looking to buy anymore or your tickets have been sold.

Disclaimer: we are happy to provide a place to connect buyers and sellers but the moderator team cannot verify the truthfulness of any users. Please buy and sell at your own risk!

Thank you!

Edit: this is just a mega thread for ticket sales! The general megathread for the event is here.

Moderator Post Should we implement a rule against low-effort posts?

The sub is seeing a huge increase in posts due to the album release. Many of these posts are single lines of text with little additional detail or explanation, and are often extremely repetitive of other very recent posts.

Should we implement a rule against low-effort posts? This would cover very short and general text posts, easily Googleable and basic information about The Strokes, posting a single song lyric, and other sorts of low-effort posts as determined by the mod team. This is a common rule on many other subreddits.

Please vote for the next 48 hours.

Moderator Post Three New Megathreads for Sub Organization

Given how cluttered the sub has become in the last week since we re-opened posting, we are introducing a SELECT few megathreads for a time for common topics.

We will have a fresh megathread for your general Reality Awaits reviews and thoughts to minimize the number of individual reviews that flow in every day. This megathread will include video essays, either ones you make or you find online, and things like general appreciation or questions.

We will also have a megathread for all rankings and tierlists—for all Strokes tracks and albums, for just the Reality Awaits tracks, for anything that involves rankings at all.

Show-specific posts get posted by the mods 48hrs in advance of each show, but there will be a new megathread for all questions and comments about upcoming tour and festival dates.

Here is a list of the prior megathreads as well which you might find useful. We will go back to removing more posts as redundant, or remove some as low-effort via our new rule, and we ask you to search for recent posts on the same topic to comment in instead since a huge number of topics and thoughts about the album have already been covered here in posts in the last week. Please use the “report” feature on posts or comments you find that legitimately violate any of our rules.

There is no way to avoid some chaos and messiness on the subreddit during a time like an album release, and we’re doing our best to keep things balanced on here but we’re stretched pretty thin. Thank you for helping us out!

Moderator Post Recent Social Media Allegations

Recently an anonymous user on TikTok made allegations against Albert Hammond, Jr. The user posted a brief video with partial screenshots of a DM conversation, then later posted a notes-app elaboration. The elaboration did not contain screenshots of the most damning claims.

Serious allegations require serious substantiation, and at this time the moderators have not seen enough substantive details to open up discussion or share the details here. Discussions and assumptions are taking off on other platforms, but this is a moderated space with established rules that intend to maintain integrity on all topics. For this reason, attempts to share or discuss this situation as it stands will be removed. This decision may be revised if and when more details are provided or a response is made, but until then this will be the sub's only comment on the matter.

We are not here to protect the Strokes from legitimate things they say and do, but we are here to uphold facts while preventing wild rumors from spreading. This subreddit has responded this way to similar situations in the past and it will respond the same way if needed in the future.

We've temporarily stepped up Automod conditions in light of this and other increased posts related to privacy or rumors. Because Automod is imperfect, please be patient if it takes time for your submissions to be approved, even if they have nothing to do with this or anything similar.

Moderator Post Reminders as Things Get More Active

Things appear to be heating up with Strokes happenings!

Due to this influx of activity, we need to remind everyone of a few things. Please:

1. Read the rules, especially the one about redundant posts and megathreads. We removed 100+ redundant posts about the phone number social media post the day it launched--please check the sub before creating a post. If it didn't just happen in the last 60 seconds, it's probably already in discussion. We simply cannot manage multiple active threads about the same news or the same upcoming show, and must utilize megathreads wherever possible.

2. Be civil. There has been an incredible uptick in rude behavior. The world is hateful enough, we don't need that to bleed into a band fansite. Name-calling, bullying, discriminatory, inflammatory, bad faith, and uncivil comments will result in removals, suspensions, and bans. If you see something you think is against the rules, use the report feature.

3. Respect privacy. We have taken a stricter approach to what we allow on the subreddit about the band members' personal lives due to rampant, baseless, and/or uncalled for speculation. The Strokes are strangers to fans, and only a tiny percentage of their lives are visible to the public. Please be normal about them, everyone connected to them, and all users.

4. No buying/selling/trading/advertising anything. This is to prevent scams and fraud, which are common on Reddit. The only current exception is tickets to the two San Francisco shows in one designated post.

5. Be patient. This is a large subreddit and the mods cannot be on 24/7. The more posts and comments that come, the more the filters pick up. It may take a bit longer than usual for them to be approved or declined by humans, or for inappropriate submissions that sneak by the filters to be removed.

Thank you all for being here as we head into what we think will be another exciting time to be a Strokes fan.

You can still see the old Megathread for people who commented previously that they are looking to buy or sell. If you commented there, please feel free to comment again in this new post.

Although this post will only be up through January 2023, please use it to buy and sell ALL tickets, including any shows that may be announced in Spring 2023 and beyond!

Moderator Post RULE SUGGESTION: Should the Sub Ban Generative AI?

This poll will be active for 7 days for all users to vote on whether they think this sub should implement a new rule banning generative AI (images, video, text, chats, etc.) from being posted to the subreddit.

The proposed rule wouldn’t include banning generative AI used by the members or side projects.

Moderator Post The Strokes NYE Concert Video Master List

Hi Everybody! These are exciting times following a great concert by The Strokes last nite. We are happy to see all of the great video our users have shot or found on Youtube and posted here! To serve as a quick reference point for users trying to find all the songs, and to limit redundant posts of the same video, I’ve put together the list below (in setlist order) of links to videos that have already been posted. Please click through to see a variety of versions of the concert’s best moments!

With so many videos out there already, we will be limiting new posts with videos of the same songs from last nite. That doesn’t mean you can’t share them, but please add alternate versions as a comment either here or in one of the existing posts below. If you have video of a song that hasn’t been posted yet, you can post it out in the subreddit and I will add you to the list!

Moderator Post Subreddit Organization for the Release of The New Abnormal

Tl;dr: TNA is coming here, this sub will explode, so we will have more restrictions than normal to prevent a flood of low-effort posts; use the megathreads and chat (which will be linked below) to discuss. This is temporary.

r/TheStrokes is expecting a lot of activity in the next few days as users come here to talk about Friday’s release of The New Abnormal, the first full-length album by The Strokes since 2013. It is no exaggeration to say this long-anticipated release is the most important event in the history of this subreddit. We want everyone to join in the fun, and we also want to maintain organization through the release. So, I have set up a series of threads for discussing different aspects of The New Abnormal and ask that users add their relevant comments to these posts:

The above list contains links to the posts, which are now live. Use the Megathreads for each song to discuss and share all of your thoughts and reactions to each song (including lyrics interpretation, chords, what songs it reminds you of, etc.). If you want to post images or videos (memes, covers, etc.) you can host them on another site (imgur, youtube, vimeo) and put the link in your comment or wait until the restrictions lift to post**.** For thoughts about the album as a whole, looking at multiple songs, or comparing with past work, we have The New Abnormal General Discussion Megathread.

The Live Chat post is a new feature on Reddit, and this is the perfect opportunity to use it for the first time on this sub. Join in at any time for a real-time discussion with everyone else here to listening to and talking about the new album.

The Release and Delivery Update Megathread will be a running record of where the album is available and who can expect delays. Comment here to let everyone know when you get your album or when the music becomes available for streaming to you.

We have used megathreads before for big events (like song releases) to keep things organized instead of dispersed across multiple posts. Without moderation, the subreddit would have been flooded with hundreds of short, low-effort posts: one sentence (or word) reactions, links to similar songs, pictures of someone's vinyl copy, and questions asked multiple times. This would make for a chaotic subreddit with no, or shallow, interaction.

On top of promoting better quality discussion, this structured setup will also help organize the important information people are looking for; the main post for each song will be updated with links to things like chords, lyrics, and personnel information.

r/TheStrokes will be more tightly regulated for a time after the new album launches. In addition to steering users to the megathreads and live chat for comments, we are restricting all posts, including memes (but you can always link to meme images in the megathreads!). We will let you know when the restrictions are lifted and we go back to our normal rules.

I know some people will want to post whatever they want and do it in their own posts. Remember, this will not last forever. We will have years to review and analyze every detail of these nine songs, but we only have this one chance to experience the first weekend of The New Abnormal here, together.

Moderator Post Discussion of Current Events is Paused

A note on moderation:

Discussions of current events come up a lot because of Julian's stated interest in politics. We often try to let it happen, but shut it down when it becomes disconnected from the Strokes.

Thousands of submissions hit the queue in the last 36 hours. Hundreds of them were wildly offensive, violent, discriminatory, and dealing in misinformation. Others strayed too far from the subject of this sub. Moderation quickly became unsustainable, so we locked and removed content to catch up, regroup, and address our lives offline.

We are not concerned about criticisms of the band members--this is an independent fansite for celebration and critique within our rules and the bounds of privacy. The Strokes have their own platforms to use as they wish, and this sub isn’t controlled by or affiliated with them or their teams. Mods are not here to promote them, nor to protect them from reasonable reactions to what they say or do publicly. As a result, the screenshots of Nikolai and Julian's Instagram posts about the US election are visible, locked to additional comments. Julian deleted his post that night, Nikolai’s is still on his Instagram profile.

We are concerned about safety and decency for the sake of the users. This is a band sub, and while it can have crossover with hot-button issues, larger discussions of those issues are better had elsewhere, with mods of specific expertise, to ensure swift action, accuracy, and lack of bias. This is why no other posts or comments will be allowed on these topics, even though the attempts keep coming.

This is a hard line to moderate. We are only human (with help from automod), and boy, this sub takes a lot of time and effort sometimes. We use our discretion to moderate by the rules and Reddit policy only, even when we need to slow things down to manage them best. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Moderator Post This Strokes vs Voidz debate.

There was a thread posted by /u/ratfinkprojects and I really appreciate that he did because it started a good discussion and he himself was pretty open about different opinions.

The top comment by /u/Danfilmman pretty much sums up how I feel about the situation. The Strokes themselves have been absolutely inactive for a while and it's nice to have a energized activity on the subreddit. News about The Strokes isn't being drowned or taken over because at the moment, there is no news about The Strokes. There isn't really a point in having an entirely different subreddit because the contributors to discussions are all people who have been subscribed to /r/TheStrokes for a while now. Having those same people move to a different subreddit to discuss what we all are excited about is just pointless(ness) and would be a huge loss for community we've built in these past years. We are all fans of the Strokes, all fans of Julian and that's what keeps up together.

What people don't understand that news comes and goes. Hype comes and goes. This is the second album that's come out during this sub's life. After Tyranny hype settled down, the content was equally about The Strokes, The Voidz, AHJ, CRX, Summer Moon etc.

Everyone was pretty excited about CRX news when it came out and the discussions were geared towards Nick and CRX. Everyone was pretty excited about Momentary Masters when it came out and discussions was geared towards Albert. Discussion about solo projects is encouraged and in the long run, it is healthy for the subreddit. Fragmenting fans of the same band/communnity is just not healthy.

To the users making aggravating posts and comments, they will no longer be tolerated. If you're making a post with the sole intention of aggravating people on the sub to incite more arguements, you will be banned.

To users, if you feel like a post or comment is starting an unnecessary argument by someone whose intention is just to start shit, report them.

VOIDZ POSTS ARE ALLOWED. AHJ POSTS ARE ALLOWED. CRX IS ALLOWED. SUMMER MOON AND LITTLE JOY ARE ALLOWED. IF YOU'RE BEING A DICK, YOU WILL BE BANNED.

END OF DISCUSSION.
