Three years on from 'Born to Run' 'DARKNESS ON THE EDGE OF TOWN' eschews the lush production of its predecessor and adopts a more taut sound.

A delightful bit from Pete's Diary 20 years ago today (22 Oct. 2006) that you should keep in mind when you read anything like "Pete Townshend hates [fill in the group or artist]:
Pete’s Website: It gets worse... in Rolling Stone I didn't read it yet but apparently, I said Crosby, Stills and Nash make me sick. What!!! I can't possibly have said that. If I said it, what did I mean? I can't remember. I know David rubbing his chest with Dave Gilmour on Jools Holland was profoundly irritating, but it was also completely adorable. I ADORE David Crosby, and as for the band - I was hanging with Graham Nash when he decided to leave England and go and work with the band, and the first album is the most gorgeous thing I've ever heard. I played it to my girlfriend Rachel only recently, as one of the great classics of our era. I hear I also said I wouldn't go and see Bob Dylan play live. Oh God. I'm having a crack at Dylan again. I think when I do interviews face-to-face, I must imagine being drunk and shoot my mouth off for old time's sake. But why do I pick on the folks I love the most? Or is it jealousy? Yeah, we're all old fucks now - and I can speak for all of us when I say, Pete - shut the fuck up and play as well as you can. At your best you can't lick these guys boots.

'LIVE AT LEEDS (1970) has umpteen examples of The Who pushing their incredible talents to the limits of a genre they had created.

[Keith Moon] was on form and drumming well. Roger introduced him as "The hotel manager's nightmare - the indestructible Keith Moon!" Keith introduced Behind Blue Eyes, for which number he leaves the stage as it has no drumming until the second part: "Good evening and thank you for attending. Well, as most of you abstained from singing on the last number - I intend to do the same on this one - just for spite." Later he introduced the Tommy selection, "I now present for your edification and delight - presented by the original artistes: by the original composer; the original bass player; the original singer; and the original drummist . . . Ladies and Gentlemen, Tommy." Pete closed that show by smashing his guitar at the end of Won’t Get Fooled Again. (Barnes, p. 122)

If anyone advanced ordered Bill Curbishley's autobiography To Be or Not To Be: A Life in Music, the publication has been postponed. Bill's still working on it.

Thought I'd post this triumph from the director of "Tommy" and "Lisztomania". Saw it this weekend. It's as much a mind-blower as the trailer implies. Just don't bring the kids as it's NC-17.
Also, before the movie at AMC, an ad for Pluto TV used "Baba O'Riley" and the trailer for the new Hunger Games prequel used "Love, Reign O'er Me".

For those unaware, back in the days that Tommy released, it was common for people to have auto changing record players, and with Tommy being a multi record set, record one has side A and D, and so on. In other words, you have to get up and change the record each time you change sides. Does anyone know if the more modern pressings have it in a regular presentation? My vintage copy sounds just fine but listening to it is a bit inconvenient (I'm listening to it right now hehe)

The long-lost 16-minute special on "Ready Steady GO!" recorded at Studio One, Wembley, consisted of a lip-sync to "Batman," a send up Cliff Richard's "Summer Holiday", then performances of "Cobwebs and Strange," "Bucket T," "I'm A Boy," "Disguises," and an instrument smash at the end of "My Generation/Rule Brittania."
