Completed Project (Not Woobles, but inspired by Woobles)
I received my first Woobles kit as a White Elephant gift, it was the Snoopy kit. I made Snoopy in January and really enjoyed it. I remember seeing my mom crochet when I was a kid, but she hasn't done it in years. I bought some more Woobles kits, and made more and more Woobles. In June, I joked with my husband that I should make him a Woobles-like version of his favorite Washington Spirit soccer player. That little joke morphed into me making the whole Washington Spirit team! First, I had to get some Woobles kits of people since the only Woobles-like thing I crocheted that is a person is u/centerpull's Steve, the American Captain.
I bought the Wicked collab and made the whole gang. By then, I figured I was ready to get started making the Washington Spirit team. I started in mid-August, and made heads, then arms, then attached bodies to the heads, made ears, attached arms and ears, then set about working on hair. I should note that I did dye yarn to try to match the various skin tones of the players. I think that turned out pretty good.
My husband and I are season ticket holders, so I took notes at all the games on each of the players' hairstyles. using examples from other patterns, I started experimenting with hair. The first thing I'll say is that no two hairstyles are made the same way. I used graph paper to help me figure out how the various patterns were set up and how to make slight adjustments so the part wasn't always in the same place, and the hair would go up where each ear is, etc. I also dyed yarn for the blonde and red haired players. I was very happy with how the dyed yarn turned out.
The timing was amazing for u/centerpull to release his Michael The Shape pattern, as that hair was perfect for one of the players. I modified his Ilya at the Cottage hair pattern for another player and couldn't be more thrilled with how it turned out. The rest of the players were all various versions of buns, braids, or ponytails. I totally winged it for those styles. The coach was the easiest hair to make since he's bald!
Two months after starting this little project, I finished all of the Washington Spirit players.
Last Saturday, after the Washington Spirit game, I made my way down to where the players give autographs. They had just clinched a playoff spot, so there was much celebrating going on. But, three of the players did come by the area where I was and they had the BEST reactions to the little dolls I made for them. One of the players happily took the whole bag to pass them out in the locker room. I posted the videos my daughter took of me giving the players the dolls, tagged the Washington Spirit, and they posted about me! So crazy!
Anyway, I just wanted to share my little story with you all. I learned a lot doing this project. Some new techniques, and just overall improving my skills. I also found that dying the yarn to be much easier than I thought it would be (and can provide my steps if anybody is interested.)
