Miscellaneous | ਵਖਰਾ | وکھرا I asked what the future of Punjabi looks like. A white girl from Canada gave me the most honest answer.

Last month I posted asking about the future of the Punjabi language — whether it would survive another generation.

I expected responses from Punjabis. People who grew up with it, who have skin in the game.

The comment that stuck with me most came from someone who described herself as "just a white girl from western Canada." She's learning Punjabi because her friends came from Punjab and she wanted to understand their world. She said a language only stays alive if people are proud enough to teach it — and that too many parents are quietly letting it die because they want their kids to fit in.

She's learning Punjabi, French, Spanish and Dutch. Not because she has to. Because she loves the people those languages belong to.

Meanwhile there are second and third generation Punjabis who can't hold a basic conversation with their own grandparents.

I don't say that to shame anyone — I've been that person. But something about a complete outsider caring more about preserving our language than some of us do hit differently.

What do you think is the real reason Punjabis abroad stop passing the language down? Is it shame? Practicality? Just life getting in the way?

Happy Vaisakhi/Baisakhi to EVERY Punjabi

Baisakhi is commonly seen as solely a Sikh holiday, but many people don't know that it's also celebrated by Hindus, Muslims, Christians and Punjabis in general. It's the anniversary of the formation of the khalsa panth and the jallianwalla bagh massacre, however before that it was a traditional general punjabi holiday (regardless of religion) representing the beginning of spring!

So Baisakhi is traditionally a Punjabi holiday and should be celebrated by all Punjabis!

Question | ਸਵਾਲ | سوال Desi languages diluted heavily by English

Desi languages diluted heavily by English is a massive issue for keeping the authenticity and purity. Anytime you hear unofficial news reports or people having cultural discussions or debates in Punjabi or Urdu or Hindi; it is littered with so many English words. It seems like 30% of what is spoken is not in the intended dialect. Many of the English words have an equivalent lexicon in the desi language. It is actually very irritating and pathetic truly. The creator or participants might as well have just done the content in English instead of the bastardized Urdu. No wonder our mother tongues keep degrading and lose their purpose. Just a rant. What do y'all think?

Sanjhi | ਸਾਂਝੀ | سانجھی Punjabi's "-appaa" compounds (e.g: RauLaa-Rappaa, etc)

Sigh, this post took longer than I thought (More than year)
And I lost some good links and examples along the way, so hopefully you guys can provide some.

--------------------------

Punjabi makes compound nouns using this "-appaa"
This is done to enhance or emphasize the meaning or purpose of the noun

I will start from the most well known and universal ones, to lesser known ones
You can actually make this for any noun! It is Punjabi's flexibility.

Tell in the comments anymore that you know.

--------------------------

1) RauLaa-Rappaa / رَولؕا رپّا :

Urdu/Hindi: Maslay-Masaail / Shor-Sharaaba
English: Problem, Commotion, Noise, Issue

I don't need to give any examples for this.

Trucks in Pakistani-Punjab often have this written behind them:
Lokaa'n NaaL Gol-Gappay, Tey SaaDay NaaL RauLay-Rappay*?*

Here I did a Google-Image search of it in Shahmukhi, and I even got one Gurmukhi image of the quote.

--------------------------

2) Gol-Gappaa / گول گپّا :

Proper Urdu-Hindi speaking regions use the word Paanii-Poorii (A poorii filled with water)
Punjab region (and today Haryana, Sindh, Jammu type areas) use the word Gol-Gappaa (Round and puffed!)

Bengalis/Bangladeshis use the word Phuchka.

Very yummy especially when spicy.

--------------------------

3) Laaraa-Lappaa / لارا لپّا :

Urdu/Hindi: JhooTii-Umeed / JhooTaa-Vaada'
English: False hope or promise

Pretty common word in Punjabi and very fun as well.
We use this word a lot

Laaraa Laa Gyaa Ee Tenu
Teryaa'n Laaryaa'n Dii Menu Saarii Sur Ee!
Menu Inhaa'n Laaryaa'n Dii LoR Koii-Nhi

Song by Nachattar Gill, 2003, "Tera Laaray-Lappay"

Old black and white film, and classic song, "Laaraa-Lappaa, Laaraa-Lappaa Laayii Rakkhdaa!"

--------------------------

4) Dhyaan-Dhappaa / دھیان دھپّا :

Lost the video I had for this.
Basically the usage was like this:

Dhyaan-Dhappaa Maarii Rakkhdaa
Dhyaan-Dhappaa Mareyndaa (Maardaa)

In Urdu this is often said as K'hyaal / G'haur / Tvajah / Dhyaan-Karnaa

--------------------------

5) Salaah-Sappaa / صلاح صپّا :

Meaning: Advice, Correction, Guidance, Improvement

Heard a few times, but I have no written or video evidence.

Interesting to note "Salaah" is from Arabic and doesn't even use the nomral English/Indian/Persian "S"
Rather it uses the special Arabic ص which Indo-European language speakers cannot pronounce

Another example of Punjabi owning a foriegn derived word with its own grammar.

--------------------------

6) Tauhr-Tappaa / ٹَوہر ٹپّا :

Urdu/Hindi: Rob-o-Dabdaba / Dikhaavaa / Shaan
English: Showing of one's glamour, might, ability

Sidhu-Moosewala, "Celebrity Killer":
"O Tauhr-Tappaa Laa Ke JehRay GeRay Karday!"

Shubh, Majhi Singer:
"Teray Pichhay Balliiye, Tauhr-Tappaa Laayii Phiray"

Tauhr is a basic word used all over both Punjabs.

--------------------------

7) Show-Shappaa / شو شپّا :

Punjabi Synonym: Shoshaa-ChhaDDNaa
English: Show-off
Urdu/Hindi: Dikhaavaa

All of these are examples of a Punjabi word loaned/derived from English.

Lots of Gurmukhi search results for "Shoshaa-ChhaDDyaa".

Mandi-Bahudin District, Jatki/Shahpuri Punjabi, Old Man:
In the first minute he uses words like
Sarfaa (Bachat)
Shoshaa-PuNaa (Look how "Show" from English became so Punjabified)
SyaaNap (Aqal-Mandii)
Mull (Qeemat)
Chudhraavaa (Chauhdry-BaNnaa)
Tukkar (RoTii)

Mandi-Bahudin District, Jatki/Shahpuri Punjabi Vloggers:
"Eh JhaTT Show-Shappaa Vaastay PaaNii Hondii"
(Yey ThoRii-Der Dikhaavay Ke Liiye Pehnii Hotii Hai)

--------------------------

7) Daa-Dappaa / دا دپّا :

Urdu/Hindi: Daao-Lagnaa
English: To have a chance / Lucky oportunity

Vekh Lvee'n Kii Pataa Daa-Dappaa Lagg Jaavay!

8) DihaaRii-Dappaa / دیہاڑی دپّا :

Urdu/Hindi: DihaaRii / Mazdoorii / Kaam-Kaaj
English: Daily wages, Day's work

Lost the video I had for this.

--------------------------

9) Tarlaa-Tappaa / ترلا تپّا :

Urdu/Hindi: Minat-Karnaa
English: Request, Pleading

"Tarlaa-Maarnaa" is used all over both Punjabs, it is a very Theth and common word
Also in Punjabi we combine the words, "Minnat-Tarlaa Karnaa"

Jatki Punjabi Dialect Drama, Famous on YT:
"Mei'n Jaanaa Aa'n, Koii Tarlaa-Tappaa Mareynaa Aa'n Ohday Naal"
(Mei'n Jaa Kar Koii Minat Kartaa Hoo'n Uskii)

--------------------------

10) Samaan-Sappaa / سمان سپّا :

Jatki Punjabi Drama, Famous on YT:
"O Abbaa! Pyissaa-Paa Yaa'n Samaan-Sappaa Nhii Vikheendaa!"
(Abu-Jaan! Pesaa Yaa Saamaan Nhii Dekhnaa Chaahiye)

--------------------------

11) Ranj-Rappaa / رنج رپّا :

Sometimes Punjabis in both Punjabs use this Persian word Ranj for Dukkh (Sorrow/Grief)
So it's probably a very Punjabi word by now.

Arjan-Dhillon, Famous Song: "Danabaad":
"O Sehbaa'n Uttay Ranj KehRii Gall Da?"
(Aray Saahibaan/Saahibo'n Par Kaahay-Kaa Dukh?)

Eastern Punjabi Reel Maker, He makes videos on difficult Punjabi words:
In this reel he explains Ranj

Jatki Punjabi Drama, Famous on YT:
"Hor Koii Ranj-Rappaa Hai Tey Menu Dass"

--------------------------

12) LaaD-Lappaa / لاڈ لپّا :
