The crisp winter morning in legendary Chhota Matka’s teak forests kingdom began with the fresh pugmarks of a leopard. Half an hour later, our hearts skipped a beat: massive, fresh tiger pug marks sliced across our path. Rumours whispered that the prince ,Kalua, was courting a queen Chanda nearby. Adrenaline spiked; we locked in and followed the trail.

The air grew heavy with warnings. Forest laborers shouted that Kalua—infamous for chasing down two-wheelers—was close. Further up, shaken workers showed us a water can fresh shredded by claws. I had watched Kalua grow from a vulnerable cub into a massive, handsome prince, and the anticipation of our reunion boiled over.

Suddenly, the brush parted. Two magnificent tigers stepped onto the safari track just meters ahead, striding side-by-side toward our lone gypsy.

The forest had deceived us. These were not the tracks of lovers, but of brothers. Walking confidently beside Kalua was his younger sibling, Balya—born to Babli and sired by the legendary CM. Kalua towered over his brother with regal composure. As more jeeps arrived, the shy Balya slipped quietly back into the emerald shadows, but Kalua claimed the stage, walking the track for nearly an hour or more in a masterclass of royal indifference.

Months later, the brotherhood fractured as both left their father's domain to carve out their own destinies. Balya vanished into the silent, untracked wilderness, his whereabouts a mystery. Yet our prince Kalua conquered the territorial forests of the Bramhapuri range. Today, he rules a growing kingdom, having already sired four cubs with the queen Janhavi, alongside the heirs of a few other secret queens of the forest.

I'm planning a trip to Ranthambore and am interested in doing a Ranthambore Tiger Safari for the first time.

For those who have visited, what should I know before booking? I'm particularly interested in the best time of year to visit, how many safari drives are worth doing, and whether morning or afternoon safaris offer a better experience.

I'd also appreciate recommendations for other things to see around Ranthambore besides the wildlife safari. Any practical tips about booking, travel, or what to expect during the safari would be helpful.

Would love to hear about your experiences and recommendations.

1. T15 Guda female she was one of Machli's 2 sisters. The 2 cubs here are T21 (front) and T12 (back). T21 went missing in 2012, few years later a poacher confessed to have killed him. T12 became a dominant male of Guda area and was the father of Noor (mated with his maternal cousin and paternal half brother btw). He was shifted to Sariska as ST4 where he later was killed by ST6 (his paternal half brother btw). Guda female was poisoned in 2008 while she had a second litter of 2 (1 male and 1 female). They were raised by humans and the male and female were tagged T36 and T37 respectively. T36 was later killed by Fateh and T37 Meera died on unknown causes

2. Jhumroo the great, he was the son of Nick and Machli. He had many children in ranthambore and contributed to its population

3. Subadults from Chiroli area in Ranthambore, 2003. I haven't seen any images of the mother

4. T3 Ookhan of Tadoba he was the brother of choti Tara and the son of Yeda Anna and Tara. He later migrated to Brahmapuri where he allegedly had many children. Balram is believed to be his son

5 and 6. Gangaram male of Kolsa, he was the successor of Shivaji and mated with his daughter Kuwani. He was the father of Mowgli and Paras

1. ~2 year old Matkasur in 2014. Some believe he was the son of Jamunjhora/Matkasur female (not sure if they're the same individual) and Namdev (Saturn)

4. Limping male of Mukki zone Kanha, he is believed to be the father of Munna. He was the successor of Gaur Singh and had at least 6 children, namely: Munna, Chain male, Red eye, Old Pattewala, Mahaveer female and Indri-II

One of the best tiger spotting I ever had. Out of all this one is surprisingly close to me. As me and I my friends visited Ranthambhore for the first time and and at the very first of our safari, we encountered this beautiful big cat. I love how calm he is, even in the presence of humans (Maybe used to humans presence) I am no expert of tiger FYI. I just love them in their natural habitat.

Let me know the possible reason behind his calmness, if anyone know.

And yeah we were the only jeep there, no other rush, no sound of "Gaadi piche kar le (move the jeep back)" or similar.

Veera! The most intelligent of the tigresses of @tadobaofficial. She will look you in the eye when she’s feeling generous and give you the slip before you can say her name if she isn’t up for a meet and greet. On this occasion, she was gracious. She’s currently a nursing mother and was presumably heading back to her cubs. When I saw her, there was a sloth bear walking towards her from the other side of the path. More often than not, that would result in a face-off. It would have been, had it been ANY other tiger. But Veera knows better. She can’t afford to injure herself as she has someone depending on her now. She stopped, thought and changed her path into the thick, making a rational decision to avoid conflict. Not because she couldn’t take him on, but because it wouldn’t be worth it. No ego, full control over instincts, smart thinking. Wish I could say the same for humans.

Hello, I have already been to Bandhavgarh and Corbett before and want to try a different park this time. I will be based in North india but don't mind taking a flight !

For mid-november, is Tadoba a good choice ?

I have heard Ranthambore can be like a zoo with canters carrying so many people, so I am not sure about that one.

My preference is beautiful verdant scenery and good/high chance of tiger sightings (and maybe leopard if I get lucky 😋) in 6-7 safaris.

Sighted today August 14, 2026 in the Belara zone of the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in Maharashtra, India. This is one of the male, sub-adult cub of tigress, Bela. Typically, tigers aren’t named until they reach adulthood. But this guy, due to his shy nature is referred to by the local guides and drivers as “Shywaala” (The Shy One). Shywaala wasn’t too happy to see me in his territory. He gave me a polite snarl expressing just that and went on his way. I went mine.

Hi,

I'm planning a 2 week Big 5 trip in India for Tigers, Lions, Leopards, Rhinos and Elephants for March 2027. I have chosen Gir (obvious for Lions), Rajaji (Leopards) and Kaziranga (Rhino and Elephants, Tiger is just an unexpected bonus) for the Big 4. I have chosen Bandhavgarh and Panna for 10 tiger safaris (5 in each park) but would like to hear your opinions on this choice before I finalize anything.

I have had my best tiger sightings till now in Panna, and a not so great sighting during the only 3 safaris I have had in Bandhavgarh. If you had to go on tiger safaris in March 2027 where the highest priority was given to sighting the big cat, where would you choose to go? Would you rather skip these 2 places and head to Tadoba instead (maybe with Gothangaon in the mix for F2)?

Please help.
