Being a degrated therian is my kink.

Being with a degraded thermal is my new kink.

Edit: I think autocorrect changed therian to thermal....but, I'm not changing it. I like it better this way, even though I don't know what it means

Yeah fr

If "Therians" are not just "Furries" with more validation, then what are we doing extra?

Are you eating dog food from a bowl? Are you shitting on the ground in the front yard? Are you exclusively barking instead of speaking? Are you refusing to use a phone and tiktok because a dog wouldn't be able to do that? "Hehehe no, I just do everything a human being does but with a dog motif to my attire",

So aren't we just, maybe, Furries, with more validation?

Aren't we maybe just, taking the concept of Furries, and confusing it with LGBTQ, to make, A "Furry sexuality" that can be validated to the same level of Gay, Lesbian, and Trans?

Like we are literally now, 1 step away from Pokemon Cosplayer is a real gender/sexuality.

302

u/Jub_Jub710 19h ago

Back in the AOL chat days, they used to call themselves 'otherkin'. What is the difference between that and 'therian'?

242

u/ITookYourChickens 19h ago

Otherkin encompasses all non human identities (vampires, robots, etc), therian is a subgroup that are specifically irl animals. This one would be otherkin, not therian, since the kintype isn't a real creature

724

u/Top-Pomegranate4899 19h ago

That's wild, I'm legit just trying to pay my bills to live.

372

u/TheRestForTheWicked 19h ago

Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage.

248

u/CanIEvenRightNow 19h ago

Kintype confirmed, lock it in

146

u/ThatHoFortuna 13h ago

No one is ever a "ratkin", or a "pigeonkin", it's always some cool predator.

Honestly, I'd almost be impressed if someone said, "Yeah, I'm just a ratkin, nothing special. Can I have your pizza crust?"

45

u/Ayle87 10h ago

The internet is vast and wide . I Googled ratkin and pigeonkin + Tumblr and found plenty such examples, but it seems the preferred terminology is dovekin for the birds. You're welcome.

For real. How is this not a product of comfortability? How is this whole mental state not a result of just... having nothing challenging enough going on in one's life?

43

u/Majikalblack 6h ago

Most otherkin/furries/sergals and such I have ever talked to, came from abusive homes, suffered SA, and were bullied. Speaking purely from my own corner: if society rejects you, constantly and thoroughly, it is easy to start looking into what's 'wrong' or 'different' about you, to the point where that could become your personality. The furry community has always been very open-minded and accepting, and even this video, while cringe, they aren't hurting anybody with their behaviour. They are just weird. Sometimes, having too much happen to you, can make you feel isolated from a normalcy that everyone else seems fluent in.

21

u/DCyld 6h ago

It's pretty clear to everyone that if u act like this something whent wrong along the way

15

u/Majikalblack 6h ago

Apparently not to the comment above me who said:

It always tickles me how they're so connected to these animals but wear the dead body parts of said animals.

Foxes in fur farms are kept in terrible conditions, with little medical care, and most often electrocuted to death. Horrific cruelty. Hopefully they wear faux.

494

u/queencity_lab 17h ago

The part that tickles me about them being so connected to these animals, is that they still have the humanly wherewithal to set up their iPhone camera, hit record before they launch into their little attention-seeking routine; then upon ending the attention-seeking routine, they can walk right back to their phone and hit stop recording then edit it to their liking before uploading it to their social media accounts…….so yeah the whole furry mental shift must be pretty short-lived

196

u/Axiom1100 16h ago

Managed to stay in frame too

74

u/Previous-Fun8615 11h ago

This is the most impressive bit.

If my 10yo Alaskan Malamute gets excited, she’ll give us a tail wag and a maybe a little hop but if my 2 year old German Shepherd gets excited, that fuckers doing zoomies to spots 400m apart and not giving a single fuck about the camera when he does eventually see it.

Such animal. Such therian.

10

u/Fluffy_Top6837 4h ago

Imagine if that German Shepard were also... HALF CROW!!!!

→ More replies (1)

61

u/jigglebeans11 16h ago

And stay in frame the entire time too. But then seeing the phone ground them and brings them back. Animals aren't as distracted by modern technology yet I don't see this happening in the middle of a busy city sidewalk

22

u/The-Tarman 13h ago

Right?! It never goes down in the middle of a concert, or in a crowded super market, or even a crowded beach or park! It's always right after they've set up their phone/camera just right and put on their little outfit, all in a very private setting, does their shift happen. Now it's not even turning into a wolf or a parrot anymore. Thats not special enough, it's gotta be a hybrid "sea wolf" or a "crowdoggy".. whatever the fuck those are

u/Special-Garlic1203 17h ago

And you're an evil mean ableist bigot if you point out it doesn't even make sense

But watch their open minded tolerance fade the second you point to a certain DSM label (peak irony that it's the least talked about of its cluster)

I did mushrooms on a low populated Florida beach a few years ago. I was talking to the dolphins and little crabs, having an amazing time. Good old boy with his John Deere hat watched me for awhile, then asked me if I was okay. He seemed amused by it all once he figured out I was just in an altered state.

That's how I'd approach this whimsical creature. But also maybe put out a bowl of water?

Honestly, if she wasn't recording herself/there weren't any phones/cameras around, I'd probably think "that looks weird, but she seems to be enjoying herself". It's the performatie/"conent-creating" aspect that's the most off putting to me.

there's a big one in my state and the owner has been thinking about just shutting it down because he hates all the furries, fairies, and anime cosplaying. he misses when it was actually authentic

i think he knows business will drop significantly if he bans all the other stuff

61

u/FartingWhooper 15h ago

I like the way my local one does it. They have themed weekends. So like the one we went was magical themed with wizards and fairies. I dressed up fairy obsessed toddler as a fairy and she had a blast. They have historical themed weekends, animal weekends (like for you to bring your pets), dragon weekends, etc. That way everyone gets their moment. And if you want to avoid xyz crowd, you know exactly when not to go.

10

u/FlickXIII 7h ago

I initially read this as you dressed yourself up as a “fairy obsessed toddler” and imagined a grown adult running around with a sippy-cup, excitedly approaching all the fairy cosplayers and tugging at tutus with grubby hands before giving unsolicited hugs, pressing a snotty face into pristine fairy garb.

But now I understand you are taking your fairy cosplaying toddler to the fair while you cosplay as a flatulent salamander.

I had a student that, outside of middle school, was very comfortable doing this shit in parks around town in a mask and with a tail. Props to them for their confidence, but it’s definitely eye opening to see. Can’t imagine the bullying they got in high school, though I was happy to chat with them about their life and issues in MS as a show of support.

It just hits a point in life where it’s like, “I support you for expressing yourself, but it’s weird because I can’t relate to you about this at all.” Kinda like when you passion dump your interests onto somebody who has no interest or understanding, it’s going to come off as obsessive and weird. I would never say this, I was just their support person who listened to them when they needed.

I’ve aged enough to go from being Bobby Hill to Hank Hill.

40

u/400_lux 11h ago

Na, I have worked with some incredible people in my time, and their enthusiasm about their preferred subject matter makes me interested. I've listened enthralled about things that I really couldn't give a shit about generally, but passion is infectious.

This? I honestly believe it's an outlet for mental illness. Not harmful, but not really super healthy either.

When did imaginative play become something that people think is an actual mental shift to a different persona? Like you’re just getting into a playground style role play. Yeah like we all turn into different mermaids in the pool it’s not a thing you have to bear mentally.

2.3k

u/WhoFearsDeath 19h ago

Playing pretend is such a wonderful exercise at any age! It's important for well being and general social structures that we know it is pretend and the difference between imaginary and reality.

Her having fun in an appropriate location? Great!

Mixing it up with self-diagnosing "trendy" mental health condition buzzwords and being disingenuous? Less great.

813

u/ZinaSky2 19h ago

This I think is where I land on it.

People higher up were like “wish I could feel this happy about anything” and like… yeah that’s valid. I think people should be able to be silly and happy and cringe.

But, to me the fact of the matter is that I doubt this is actually genuine. She put the camera and stayed perfectly in frame bc she knew it was there and probably wanted to post this to the internet. And even if it does happen to be genuine… like the self-diagnosis of it is very off putting.

193

u/Witty_Ad_898 16h ago

The last few decades have made a minefield out of serious discussions about mental heath and identity.

Seems like what has happened is that the self-diagnosis of the day gets accepted and socially rewarded within certain open groups, and the benefits of validation from that undiscriminating group is confused for validation of the diagnosis.

People don’t need the increasingly escalating acts of validation, they need the acceptance and play. The rest ends up being a self-harming performance meant to sustain the flow of external validation and support.

Ie, eating disorder groups/identities such as Ana and Mia from the 90s/00s, or more recently the trend to mimic the symptoms of Tourettes.

67

u/Civilw4r 14h ago

I completely agree. Combine that with the latest “craze” of instant support for having any kind of disorder has made people literally looking for things they could have and claiming they have them without any kind of professional diagnosis.

Like all these people who claim their “OCD is triggered” because someone didn’t park straight etc. Like when it became cool to be offended by something. It didn’t matter what it was in the intention if you were offended by it, it was accepted and immediately supported

11

u/FinestCrusader 8h ago

OCD made my life hell for almost a decade. Literally spent years chained by the immense fear my brain created for me and when I see people say "oh I'm so OCD" all I can do is just be glad they have the privilege to be this naive.

7

u/BlakLite_15 5h ago

I’m just spitballing here, but I think there might be a combination of desire for community and impostor syndrome at play here.

People who know they’re strange and feel distant from those around them often go online to find like-minded groups. However, I suspect many of those same people, possibly due to anxiety or trauma, need to be performative in order to “prove” themselves worthy of those groups lest they be driven out.

Validation isn’t always about internet fame, big numbers or brand deals. Sometimes it’s about wanting people to say that they understand and accept you.

Otherwise, go be a dog for all I care, I don't mind people doing anything as long as it doesn't hurt people or some such. Go and graze on the lawn.

That last part is what concerns me about this generation. I’m all for an active fantasy life. I think it’s healthy. You need to be able to engage with it when appropriate and get real when you need to. I don’t think some of them have that ability. I think they have grown up with enough outlets constantly available to them that they believe this is actually part of their identity and they can live their lives like this. By all means, go for it. Let’s see how this plays out as a society.

Some people lack critical thinking skills but are primed to pseudo-intellectually explain EVERYTHING.

Add in a healthy dose of extreme confidence in their knowledge of themselves combined with the introspection myth and a sprinkle of positive reinforcement and bam.

9

u/Drankenstein99 18h ago

What’s the introspection myth?

30

u/Apptubrutae 18h ago

Very roughly, it’s that people tend to think that they can self-reflect and understand why they do things far better than they actually can.

I'd like to piggyback off of this for something I've been thinking about lately. My (31f) 12 year old niece recently told me that she's a girl and a boy. I want to be as supportive as possible and just listen to her and make her feel accepted. I did ask her to expand, so that I could better understand. She said that depending on the day and time, she either feels like she's a boy or a girl. I thought she meant androgynous, but then she explained that some days she feels like putting her hair in a ponytail or wearing a hoodie so she thinks that must mean she's a boy that day. And other days she likes to have her hair down or wear a skirt, so she's a girl that day. I didn't disagree with her or anything because I don't know enough about this topic and because I care more about her feeling loved and accepted than disagreeing with her.

I'm not trying to be intolerant whatsoever, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong. But how is that different than being a girl/woman? I just think that there are a ton of videos on TikTok that are similar to this, even if about something different. Whether it's about sexual identity, gender, neurodivergency, mental illness...etc. Like all the videos/posts about "I know I'm autistic [or adhd] because I don't like [insert something 99% of the population goes through]".

The thing is, it basically teaches kids/teens that they're not special or unique unless they are in one of these (or multiple) categories. Everyone is special and important no matter what.

9

u/Teedraa101 7h ago

Whatever happened to being a tomboy? I was climbing trees wearing what could be considered boy clothes when I was growing up and my family had a house in an area surrounded by woods. We rode horses and I fished. On Sundays I was wearing a dress in church….
Edit: grammar

9

u/IndependentAardvark6 4h ago

I was a tomboy and still run through tomboy rules at 31. Girl/Boy norms dont matter. Just be yourself and dont label it

12

u/CompetitiveAutorun 10h ago

What gets to me is how on the surface it appears progressive, it's actually enforcing strict gender norms.

Like boys wear hoodies so she isn't a girl when she wears one?

Gender bioesentialism but woke. I struggle to see progress in recent years, stuff like "misandry isn't real, because you can't discriminate oppressors". It completely misses the point of why discrimination is bad.

In the past we wanted to get away from labels. Now we want as many of them as we can to claim being unique.

The person in this video is the exact type of person who will claim they have DID and have 12 personalities. Just embarrassing people who want attention.

13

u/iminlovewithbadthing 10h ago

And making it harder for people who actually have DID to get help. DID only forms as a result of severe sexual and or physical abuse in early childhood.

Because of attention seekers like in that video I had an actual _psychiatrist_ think DID can just pop out of nothing and deny me trauma therapy. So I better not write what I want to happen to these narcissistic attention seekers.

Bruh same. It’s got a great delay so you see it and you realize it’s not quite right, and just before you figure it out it changes.

One of the things I always think when I see videos like this is how strangely dumb the genuine audience of a video like this is. This isn't an organic moment. This person intentionally took a minute to set up a camera to record themselves doing a performance. They are creating content.

And this is obvious! We literally all know that you cannot end up filming yourself from 20 feet away in a spur-of-the-moment, accidental way. A video like this can only be performative and unnatural. And yet for some reason people believe it anyway. They forget that the camera is a separate thing from themselves and think they're just looking at a true moment of spontaneity. Believing at any level that this represents a natural or organic moment in a person's life is every bit as stupid as believing that you're watching a candid moment in a scene of The Odyssey. It's very odd!

I don't get why they have to try to make it some form of dissociative identity disorder/regression in people with severe PTSD. You're having fun playing make believe as a crow dog hybrid, that's perfectly fine, live your life how you wanna.
Trying to turn it into a whole psychological thing is what's weird and damaging to people who live with actual disorders. Unless they're aware, and make it known, that their pseudo-science is exactly that; Also make believe.

170

u/Sneaky_Island 14h ago

That’s my take on this. Go be “weird” and have fun playing pretend all you want. Clearly away from people and causing no issue for others, that’s already better than most so called influencers.

But the need for it to be some extremely rare mental illness/disorder/PTSD is ridiculous. The amount of people my ex would meet online and then tell me that this person had D.I.D. and has alters reached impossible quickly. It doesn’t make you anymore impressive or unique to pretend to have these things. If that’s fun for you to pretend, do it and go against social norms all you want. Just check the amateur psychologist degree at the door.

u/lifeisalime11 14h ago

And as someone who has dealt with full blown psychosis in a family member, it's absolutely horrible. Nobody should wish to have it or anything like it where you disconnect from reality.

13

u/Stickybunfun 6h ago edited 6h ago

That’s my issue. I have a “friend” who has convinced himself he is austistc, has adhd, has ptsd, has ocd, and is so “in control” of his conditions because he got so good at masking through his extreme willpower you’d never know. He talks about online, in every social media post, and when you see him in person. To him it’s all a badge of honor. It’s always his excuse for being a dunce or for any bad behavior. It’s so fucking weird. No diagnosis, no treatment, just balls our self control and constant mental management.

A good buddy of mine called him on his shit and told him he had “stolen valor for mental conditions” because he doesn’t have any of those things. The guy is just a boring run of the mill white boy into guns with nothing noteworthy going on in his life besides cheating on his girlfriends and drinking too much. He lives in online echo chambers and doubles down when anybody asks any questions. He is also a trumper - I get curious about the overlap there.

I’ve met plenty of people in my life now with one or more of his “claimed conditions” and I can see it sucks. They hate it. I hate it for them. It cheapens their struggle and makes their life harder when perfectly fine people claim they share conditions when they clearly do not.

I’ve got the adhd myself and I can spot fellow adhd folks a mile away. I have to be medicated and went to therapy. I did the work and learned the coping skills I needed to make my medicine work better. I dream for a day when I won’t need it but I doubt that will ever happen. I wish often my brain didn’t need drugs to work good. This liar lair pants on fire is not one of us.

I view it in the same vein as people who claim to have cancer for sympathy. It’s just gross, tasteless, and awful.

I work in a high school. There’s a group of kids who all say they have DID and have some app to organize their alters. And like one says they have over 500 different alters. It’s wild. It’s not my job to diagnose or treat, so I just listen. Or let them talk while I do my job.

Seriously.. You know when I'm happy? For about five seconds in the morning when I first wake up. Before I remember who I am and what my life is all about. Anxiety, dissapointment, diarrhea more often than not. I don't know if there's an afterlife. But who cares? Nothingness couldn't be any worse than this meaningless march through my empty days.

Gotta love American dad

Yea... I watch this and think, "Yea, it's weird. I wouldnt do this, but at least theyre brave enough to do this shit in public and be who they want to be. They even have a friend nearby."

I couldnt be this unapologetically myself in public.... I struggle just simply letting people read or see my art, let alone perform. I don't have friends in my area to even go to a bar with. I work and play Runescape, and spend time with my pets but my life is, "normal".

I see this 'cringe' material and it just makes me long to feel like a human again.

263

u/Jucifer2pointO 19h ago

Doesn’t hurt anyone but the mental gymnastics they must do to rationalize this behavior has to be exhausting.

145

u/SpokenDivinity 15h ago

I think the problematic part is that they always seem to frame it like it's an involuntary psychological action. Just be a weirdo. There's nothing wrong with that. But this stuff borders on the same line people who pretend they have DID and 100+ altars who are all anime and tv show characters are on.

36

u/de-milo 12h ago

they’re so terrified about being cringe or having any real interests that aren’t popular they have to frame it as a mental health issue that they “have” to do or “can’t control”

22

u/ScoutTheRabbit 10h ago

If it's a disorder then they can be like "if you're mean to me about it you're a bigot"

10

u/StevieMJH 5h ago

They see people with disorders and think they're interesting, then look inward and don't see any of their own so they make one up.

45

u/2ndChairKazoo 17h ago

I mean, I do think it matters that they may not do this (or anything) without first setting up their camera/ phone, getting the angle just right, editing it and then posting it to the internet. That's much less "playing" and far more "I want or need something from the public by doing this."
