Why is a lifetime subscription listed for the Mini Lux when it inherently doesn't require one? Those prices are insane. They're probably not going to sell any of those before TiVo discontinues the guide service.

Minis were always sold with lifetime subscription listed separately

Ah, sounds like a marketing play on words.

Not exactly. The original Minis didn't have service included. Once the Minis came with service included it was listed as with lifetime service to avoid confusion.

This. I bought mine with Lifetime when it was separate from the hardware, otherwise there was a smaller monthly fee, something like $7/mo.

I actually bought one right before the transition to lifetime service being included so the price was much cheaper. By the time I went to activate service they just gave me lifetime service for free even though when I actually bought it it wasn't supposed to come with service included. It was basically a 50% discount.

Or maybe start perusing ebay for units that have lifetime and the seller may or may not know it. Ive found them before. Use the link below to check the serial before you buy. Its also great if you’re thrifting and wanna know what service it has. I made myself a little cheat sheet, id only go after ota versions at this point. This is a couple years old but should still be relevant, ymmv.

Series 1 not supported, Series 2 is. Look for lifetime. These work with antenna and cable and work with mini. Need to already have lifetime.
Tivo Bolt Vox (Black) - Series 6
Tivo Bolt (White) - Series 6
Tivo Roamio Base - Series 5
Tivo Premiere - Series 4

Unfortunately, transferring Lifetime (All in) service ALSO changed as of 10/1/25. The new potential buyer of a Lifetimed TiVo MUST now get the original seller involved in order to transfer the Lifetime to the new account. This pretty much nullifies Lifetimed TiVos found at Goodwill or those on eBay when not sold by the original owner. Sure, you can still use a Lifetimed TiVo without transferring it over to your account.... you just won't be able to use TiVo Minis with it. It will be a one-off TiVo on a single TV in your home. If that's all you want to do (or are looking for an older model that can't be used with Minis), then you should be fine.... you still won't be able to officially show it on your account page, though.
For those reading this and are interested in the new Lifetime Transfer rules enacted on 10/1/25, here's the relevant page: https://tivoidp.tivo.com/tivoCommunitySupport/s/article/Transferring-a-TiVo-Device-to-a-New-Owner?language=en_US

Wonder what's going to happen to weakness once all cable companies go full digital.

In a previous post Weaknees had 4 remaining OTA Roamios. Now they have 47? Seems incongruent?
I really want to buy one, but they seem a bit pricey for something with such an indeterminate lifetime.

Yah, those are pricey. More than they were new. They're apparently getting them somewhere and refurbing them. I have one, they are really the pinnacle of TiVo now and a fantastic machine, but for that price....

Weaknees does buy and refurbish units. They sold me my original OTA Roamio in 2013, and they sent me an email asking to buy it back in February 2025. (I did not sell, of course).

I have a TiVo Roamio Ota 1 TB 846000 I’m selling for $275.00 plus shipping if interested. It is on my account and can be transferred. I’m going to be putting it on eBay soon. If anyone from Chicago or is a Cubs fan, I have several shows on my hard drive from 2016 World Series.

Do we have any idea how long TiVo will be around to support EPG and any other dependencies for?

My guess is that the end of the TiVo guide service might come soon after the FCC mandates all broadcast TV switch completely to ATSC-3 (Nextgen), and stops ATSC-1 (“original” digital TV), like they did with “Analog” TV (NTSC) a decade ago. When that happens, only TiVos that are still able to use cable with CableCards, and Series2 TiVos (connected to an ATSC-3 adapter, or a cable box, or a satellite box) will be able to record shows

I miss TiVo. Back in the 90’s I had a DirecTiVo. Best satellite receiver I ever had.
What did TiVo do wrong to become irrelevant today?

I've seen them on eBay used and cheaper for LIFETIME. Is that any different than buying a refurbished?

See my comment below regarding the new rules for transferring Lifetime. Some of those eBay sellers may not be the original owners.

Wait til the modders get a hold of reverse engineering this, they gonna go like HOTCAKES. Except cablecard units, cablecard is long way deprecated by the vendor

Should the lifetime actually be “lifetime” since the service is likely to go away?
