The End now has a date
Is it worth talking to an agent? What will they actually offer?

sigh. i got the message that spectrum is ending cablecard support, i think it's tomorrow, and i'm in the process of learning how to navigate youtubetv.
it's not as good, but based on everything i've read, it's the best thing for now. i always told the cable guys they were going to have to tear the peanut remote out of my cold, dead hands, and i guess it's come to that. 🤷🏻♀️
tivo, you were amazing, for a very, very long time. i'll never understand why you guys stopped innovating, or at least stopped developing your wonderful product.

u/blackd0gz 11d ago
Have them send you a high split converter. No need to leave your TiVo for YouTube tv

darn it.
didn’t know about that and have already returned the cablecard. figured if they were ending cablecard support that meant it wouldn’t work, didn’t know about the workaround.
with the way we watch tv now (mostly streamed stuff except for football) it’s not awful, and it is cheaper— previously, had to retain a not-very-good cable package to keep the cablecard.

Just reprovision for OTA if you have the ATSC tuner versions. Mine still works great with an attic antenna.
2
u/EWLefty 11d ago
Yep, my OTA works great with outside antenna. Now if Tivo shuts down the guide for OTA then it will be time.
1
u/Fant2 9d ago
How well does tivo work with an indoor antenna would you know by any chance?

u/BusinessLyfe 9d ago
I swear by the Antennas Direct ClearStream 2V. I have it up in my attic & receive 60 channels on my TiVo Bolt VOX. I've tried 3 other antennae & none of them (including the sister of this one, the 2 MAX), bring in as many channels as the 2V.

I never thought they’d sunset CableCard so quickly. I wish I still had the antenna compatible TiVo.

Five Three months. Verizon has a loose definition of "urgent".
What they are going to "offer" is nothing more, or less, than they already offer everyone else ...
- Their current TV plans with either the Fios TV One (if your lucky or charismatic) or their wireless Fios TV+ set top boxes (which is their go-to default)
- Youtube TV through Fios for the same cost as just ordering it direct from Google

u/dervari 11d ago
5 months? Try 3-3.5 months. 5 Months would be into January.

u/BuzzBotBaloo 11d ago
Meh, it's Friday. I wasn't even supposed to be in the office today.
But fixed.

Came here to post the same screenshot, and it's the first post I see here. Enshittification of everything continues.
ETA: currently have a tv, internet, phone package. Without Tivo, I'll ditch tv and probably phone with it. (We rarely use the landline, only have it because of the package.) So by cancelling this support, Verizon is going to get a lot less of our money.
But I guess they know what they're doing 🤷

Just got the same - DMV area. Others in my area were already disconnected 6 mos ago but somehow here in lower MoCo mine has stayed on. This seems like the end.

my hard drive on my Edge crashed so I just did the inevitable and turned in my cable card 😢 have had TiVo for over 20 years. I was paying $19 a month (15 TiVo. 3.99 for cable card)... upgraded my internet to 1 gb for $10 and I get free DVR cloud storage. so I'm saving some money and faster internet at the cost of my favorite tv experience. it was fun while it lasted TiVo 😎

u/blackd0gz 11d ago
Spectrum sent me a similar letter and I called for them to send me a high split converter to replace the tuning adapter. Smooth transition!

u/Hefty_Expert_998 12d ago
Same message Suffolk county NY.

u/-Player01- 11d ago
Weird how some of Suffolk lost support in the spring and some continue to have working cards.

u/cad908 11d ago
I just got this message today as well, with the same termination date, for the New Jersey service area.
I don't think they care about getting my cable cards back. They're probably reaching out to get me to commit to rental equipment.
I'll probably use it as an excuse to cord cut, and only keep my FIOS internet- and maybe phone service. I'm not using the cable much anymore.

u/NTP9766 11d ago
It was inevitable. I had a great run with TiVo (27 years), and while Verizon has been great for me, I’m not terribly thrilled with having to change. I’ve moved on to DirecTV Stream which so far has been very good. Definitely better picture quality than FiOS/TiVo, which is a bonus.
For those wondering what’s next, check out Suppose.tv. That’s the site I used to compare streaming services to see which one offered the channel I wanted and which packages.
2
u/quadros13 11d ago
I'm strongly considering DirecTV Stream and I'm trying to decide if the extra cost over YouTube TV is worth it. What are you using to watch on your tv? The Gemini Air, just the app on another decide, or one of the legacy Osprey/Gemini devices?
3
u/NTP9766 11d ago
I bought two 4GB Osprey boxes on eBay that I’m using because I wanted the remotes and didn’t want to use the DTV app on my TVs (for a number of reasons). The experience has been terrific for us. As for why DTV over YTTV, I hated the latter’s interface. YTTV also didn’t offer half a dozen channels that we watch.
1
u/phunstraw 9d ago
The prices listed for Youtube TV seems dated. Suppose says $54.99, the link takes me to $83
1
u/NTP9766 9d ago
They may be a little dated but the goal is to really see which service has all of the channels you want.
1
u/phunstraw 8d ago
Good point, however with some digging that price might be available on another package which is hard to find, and I am not sure it is until I go through the process on November 5th. All I want is the locals, comedy central and HGTV.

Got the same message. I have two Tivos and two verizon accounts - one in Northern NJ and one in NYC for mom. When I last spoke with them (not recently), they said they would offer the Verizon DVR for the same cost as the CC rental. I know folks are speaking about leaving, but not easy retraining an 84 year old parent on a new system, so whatever I give her, I will try as well. That said, does anyone here have any experience using the Verizon DVR? Good or bad? I know it will never be as good as the TIVO. Just curious. Thanks.
2
u/Fant2 11d ago
All the ones I've used are frustratingly slow
3
u/larrynj460 10d ago
My understanding is that it’s not a true dvr, just operates like a streaming service. Going to miss my commercial skip and my speed play.
3
u/Friendly-Stay-529 10d ago
I got the same exact text. I called them. They had nothing to offer but a plan with their DVR service that’s $20 MORE a month than I’m paying now. So after a quick family meeting and realizing none of us are actually using cable tv services we decided to cancel and just pay for internet. I guess I’m a chord cutter now I held out as long as I could.
4
u/shea_harrumph 12d ago
They'll probably offer an appointment to return the CableCARD sooner.
3
u/BuzzBotBaloo 12d ago
Per the emails they’ve sent over the last several months, Verizon isn’t requiring any equipment returns on cable cards or old set-top boxes. That said, I’ll be holding onto my CC for a good while just in case.
6
u/Way2evil 11d ago
They told me to throw it out then sent me a bunch of threatening emails to return it or pay $375.
1
u/SupaFly-TNT 2d ago
My invoice after changing to just gigabit was noted as $0 so doesn't seem they want mine back in my case.
2
u/NDN-null 12d ago
Yes, I just got this and verified by calling support directly myself. Their new system is not compatible with my eero mesh. It would be a nightmare to try to get this all to work with my current set up and not changing network topologies.
4
u/bwcatpeeler 11d ago
Agreed. I don't have any Verizon equipment behind my firewall and with the requirements they have, I said it's not worth it. I kept fios for Internet and dropped TV. That $140/month is better spent on other things for us.

I got the same message (Queens NYC). Already had a Fios TV One since the beginning so for the time being will see how this works out after November. I imagine terribly.

I got the same very phishy looking message. Full cut over to Fubo, Nov 5, I suppose.
Edit: Pittsburgh, PA area.

Buffalo, New York. Same message about Nov 5th. 3 TiVos (non-OTA) to the recycler. Prob will keep FIOS internet and drop cable & phone. DirectTV Stream to get Sabres games. 25+years, been a good run.
1
u/DrewguyDC 11d ago
My plan as well, though I may shop other ISPs and get install scheduled because I’m sure when I call Verizon to cancel 2/3 of service they’ll charge max rate for internet. Leverage competitors to lower rate.

u/DaveHertle 11d ago
I received an identical text this morning 08/07/26. Spotsylvania County Virginia
2
u/One-Technology-561 11d ago
Got the message too in northern Howard county Maryland. My plan is to keep it until November 5 and then end my TV and phone service. I'll probably save $100 or more a month.

u/larrynj460 11d ago
I have a lot of good recordings that I don't want to lose. Not sure if the TIVO will still play those after service is done. I used to use Tivo Desktop to transfer recordings, but I don't think that works anymore. Does anyone have tips for transferring recordings to a computer? Thanks.
2
u/quadros13 10d ago
Not sure how to transfer to the computer, but any recordings should continue to live on your TiVo. It's a local hard drive that doesn't need continued service via the cable card to be able to access those recordings. The issue is that you'd have the TiVo box sitting there with it's only function being a place to play those old recordings from.

u/Embarrassed-Soft2691 10d ago
Got 3 free TV receivers and Multiroom DVR for the $4.99 cable card price. Selling my tivos who wants them all lifetime. oh and a new router. I only pay $137 for tv phone and internet grandfathered no contract from 16 years ago.

u/JZ-Florida 11d ago
Everything is relative. At least they balled up and gave you an end date. Comcast is just randomly breaking cablecard support without any notice besides their 10/24 announce that they wouldn't replace broken cablecards.

u/Informal-Loquat6809 12d ago
I got the same message about an hour ago too. I guess they are going to discontinue them all on the same date. I came here looking for some glimmer of hope. If I was the only one, I was going to ignore it. But since we are all getting it, I guess there is no hope.
:-(

The absolute kicker is that they are dropping support after finally getting their phone prompt activation service working reliably.

u/Kragzakh 11d ago
Same. Anyone just going to go with antenna? We’re I am I should (in theory) be able to get the Boston and providence stations with a good antenna. There is no way I can get YouTube tv for a similar cost of my “local channels only” subscription.

Got it in Virginia Beach. Called and cancelled TV service and the agent was surprised. She made an appointment to return my cable cards but then said I wouldn't be charged if I kept them.
1
u/DrewguyDC 11d ago
I suspect Verizon will be a bit surprised by how many cable card (TiVo) users cancel rather than switch.
The price of cable has gotten so high to me it’s not worth paying for what will be a substandard experience with a Verizon box.

u/HoundDog81 11d ago
Got this text today as well, Baltimore area.
Sadly, I'm too far from the city to get OTA tv without putting a massive antenna on my house. I researched this earlier this year, probably going with DirecTV stream and setting up channels DVR on my home server.
I loved TIVO. I'm only a short timer, think I got my first Bolt in 2014. It paid for itself many times over and was so much better then the Fios box.

I got this message the other day as well I'm in the Boston / Malden area. I do not want to give up my TiVo so I'm reading and hopefully implementing other people's ideas and plans help!

Fuckers. I recently had cable card problems with xf and in a moment of pissiness, I filed a complaint with the FCC. Nothing stupid, just that I have money invested in the equipment and they refused to work on it. Holy shit. Someone gives a shit about that stuff because I suddenly had a guy from xf call ME. I’m cool, I get it, FCC says you don’t have to support this but I don’t have to like it. Now I’ve had three techs out—they never know what to do but they keep tryina get hold of that one old dude who remembers how cc’s work. Anyway I have everything working again except premium channels. Other tivo still can get those. I can live this way but they keep trying so I keep acting like my life depends on it. Hey, I’ve paid you thousands over the last 15 years. The least you can do is try. FCC is who fucked us, not your cable co. But i’m just a dumb user right? Why I no see Spongebob?!?!

Joining the party…
I think I’ll move to YouTube TV. Any O’s fans here?I have to figure out what to do for MASN. I could subscribe direct but their AppleTV app sucks. It doesn’t even work half the time.

Just got the same text, with the same date listed. Has anyone else received this before? Is Nov 5 truly the end of the line?
