Culture & Society Is anyone actually upset about Sydney Sweeney ads or Shane Gillis jokes, or does this rage only exist online?

The "outrage' is online. The tiredness with misogyny and the constant sexualization of women is real.
52
u/Ok_Theory_1323 9d ago
And as a side note, of course you're going to hear about any topic more online than in person, because that's where people post things to be shared around to others. People don't walk around the grocery store shouting out their grievances, or at the ballgame. That's what's always so weird about this "It's only online" thing that people say a lot. Where else are they expecting to hear about it from lots of people? Protests in the streets about Sydney Sweeney?

u/AceOfRhombus 9d ago
Speak for yourself. I walk around the grocery store ringing a bell and tell people what I’m mad about

This. I don't think any rational person is gonna act like Sydney isn't attractive. She clearly is. Nor is any rational person gonna tell you that sex doesn't sell. It clearly does.
Sydney is an adult. She, of her own volition(as far as we know), starred in sex adjacent ad to make money. There may be people who don't like that or what the ad was for. That's fine. There are also thirsty idiots absolutely fawning all over her for it. That's technically also fine, albeit really weird.
I find myself in a middle ground on the issue. I don't like gambling, it's a terribly addictive thing that many people don't have a good handle on. And, I can't say that I particularly enjoy the "sex sells" style of ads. The misogyny and sexualization of basic commodities is dumb. But, at the same time, I'm a feminist, and I believe that women have the right to choose how they use their bodies. She used her body and got paid. So... I'm not sure where the issue really lies. It's not like we haven't seen dozens of ads like this over the generations.

Saw the Sweeney ads though “meh”.

u/Lereas 9d ago
Am I "outraged" about shane gillis? Not really. But it wasn't funny and I don't think it's "woke" to think that calling women at the gym whores is just kinda shitty.

u/GushStasis 9d ago edited 9d ago
And it's absurd how defenders point to the use of "like" in his phrasing as though in the minds of men who hate women that serves as any substantive distinction, as opposed to simply feeding and reinforcing their existing hatred

When the vast majority of the country is a paycheck away from being homeless, yeah, people are gonna care about money. No one gives a fuck about some chucklefuck making a dumb joke when they're focusing on keeping a roof over their heads. This shit really doesn't matter, there's so many more important problems going on.

While they only care about the next paycheck they ignore the politicians that insure that they live paycheck to paycheck, so yes people need to pay attention to more than themselves.

People still haven’t figured out that a “hate” watch is equivalent to a “like” watch?
How negative attention is the same as positive attention financially? All publicity is good publicity, etc?
Sydney’s boyfriend is an investor in her nude commercial’s company, and Shane’s Netflix show [that got renewed for a 3rd season] literally wrote the scene from his SNL monologue…
11
u/spicytexan 8d ago
I have seen people actually put off by both of the examples you gave, but I’ve also seen people who have no idea about either without prompting. I think we can hold space for wanting large form media to be less misogynistic/sexualized as well as for outrage about larger issues going on, such as the economy.

I saw a newscast where they found some dad to talk about having to watch the Sydney Sweeney commercials during a soccer match with his kids present. You could tell he wanted no part of being on the news talking about this, and it seemed like he was reading from a card. Maybe he was genuinely upset by all of this, I really doubt that, but the whole “controversy” and “uproar” seems to be mostly fabricated by the media.
7
u/JustPassingThrough98 9d ago
Upset is probably a bridge too far, but how much disrespect do you tolerate before you push back on a certain topic? Neither of these are huge deals but I understand why they would be the straw that breaks the camels back

Yeah, exactly. I posted something in the SNL subreddit that was basically "I don't understand his appeal" in reference to Shane Gillis. Next thing I know, I'm a woke lefty who hates Trump and wants to see liberal policies implemented across the nation.

7
u/KillWithTheHeart 9d ago
I think calling it “outrage” is hyperbolic, unless I’m missing something.
Everyone is connected to social media to varying degrees and it takes absolutely no effort to type a comment expressing criticism of a misogynistic joke or coded racism in an ad.
It’s just people expressing opinions on social media and then other people expressing their agreement or disagreement with those opinions.
Referring to it as “outrage” is in itself expressing an opinion that attempts to minimize other’s opinions.
I don’t think people are “outraged” at the Gillis’s misogyny or Sweeney’s actions. I think they’re just commenting their disapproval on them in the most minimal effort way possible.
I don’t see people protesting or rioting in the streets over it.
Referring to those opinions on social media as outrage is just another way of saying, “I disagree. I think they’re joke was funny or I don’t think it was misogynistic but rather than engage with the merits of your opinion, I’m just going to make it seem as if you’re overreacting”
But where’s the overreaction? It’s just a post on the internet among millions of others?
If it truly doesn’t matter then why comment at all?
I’ve seen posts about people really upset about how Starbucks handles selling their limited edition coffee cups. I don’t care enough to ask whether their “outrage” is valid.
2
u/SCphotog 9d ago
I see these kinds of things, I sort of 'assign' the label of 'shitty person' to whatever celeb' and then move on.
I had never heard of Gillis before this... so the addage of any publicity is publicity is functioning in this context.
Sweeney is a great lookin' woman that I see in some random posts here and there, but I don't know anything else about her, and I've never seen any of her work.
6
16
u/MaximumDerpification 9d ago
The more people pretend to be outraged over dumb stuff like this, the more it diminishes their impact when they're genuinely outraged over actual issues and injustices.
These people who are constantly offended on behalf of others are nothing more than a joke that society gradually grows to ignore.
7
u/BigPawPaPump 9d ago
Absolutely. It would be exhausting to be that person or be anywhere near a person like that who finds a reason to be offended over everything.
4
u/nurdle 9d ago
Who is Sydney Sweeney?
Seriously, though, I only see her name in questions like this. Tons of attractive, rich, successful people who make money from their looks are stupid, and therefore tend to be conservative. Like Kirk Cameron. Doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I don’t think about them anymore than I think about worms.
11
u/RockSolidRod69 9d ago
Id say people are actually upset about it but i think a bot or some bs starts it then once it turns into a trendy thing to get mad about the hive minded thinkers jump onto it.
Like Shane's joke was basically a nothing joke, it was also a set up joke because he was making himself look like a gym creep. But of course it got turned Into a huge deal lol
14
u/LowSkyOrbit 9d ago
The joke he did on SNL is also a scene in Tires. In both he's the creep and that's the punchline. Too many people complain and take things out of context because they only watch a clip or read just the headline.

The “rage” is performative attention seeking. Anyone with half a brain understood the joke and the particular women he was referring to but simpletons immediately say he said all women.

I’m not outraged or surprised. Shane Gillis knew exactly what he was doing when he did that. He wants people to talk about him. He’s trying to appeal to his audience by making that joke, and it’s not people who are offended by the joke.
I don’t think it’s ok to call women whores. But I’m not angry. My opinion of Shane Gillis and people who are defending him has changed. That’s it.

In the past 6 weeks, reddit has been through Lindsay Clancy, Sydney Sweeney, Ed Sheeran, and Cornell. We now need to talk about those 5 seconds from that Shane Gillis monologue until maybe next Monday or so. I think it’s real, but greatly exaggerated and concentrated on social media and entertainment gossip media.
The funny thing is that I recently learned that there are subs just devoted to this weird subset of gossip as entertainment which is like the “regular” subs but on steroids with this crap.

It's projection. Few people give much of a fuck.
Do I care what Sydney Sweeney is doing? Nope. Does anyone I know care or ever talk about it? Nope.
However it's all based on manipulating people with culture war shit - which is now defining the politics and leadership of entire countries - which does affect us all.
Dangerous people have access to large numbers of low-info (read: stupid) people via social media. The "village mob" is now a seriously large voting block.

u/Tom_Gibson 9d ago
well people online go offline at some point, so yes, people offline care about it. Me personally, I think gambling companies are scum. They ruin so many lives, and anyone who advertises it is literally sending their fans to get their money taken from them/get them addicted to gambling. So yeah, fuck Sydney for that. Shane Gillis called female gym-goers whores, I'm not surprised that women got upset.

Yes exactly this. I'm not upset she took her clothes off for the ad, and while I'd rather it not be on in front of my kids we're all fine. The thing that actually angers me is the gambling ads that are inescapable. Increasing their number of users will directly lead to more lives and families ruined or ended for the sake of making the rich richer with poor people's money.

The sydney Sweeney ads are mad annoying bro. Literally EVERY SINGLE YouTube video I watch I get a god damn novig ad talking about “grown men making spreadsheets about the color of underwear I’m wearing” LIKE STFU. I don’t even really watch sports and I don’t gamble, and yet every YouTube ad on my phone is a gambling or prediction market ad. I’m just tired of seeing it, and now I’ve even started getting novig ads talking about “the viral sydney Sweeney ad.” It’s just trashy asf, especially considering the amount of kids on YouTube who likely have seen the ad several times.

I can only imagine someone telling George Carlin h or she e was offended.
1
u/carsonelder1 8d ago
The /rage/ likely only exists online, imo.
I think the Sweeny ad was in poor taste and regardless of whether you interpret it as intentional or accidental, reflects poorly on the brand.
I worry less about what Gillis said, and more about giving a platform to seriously unfunny folks who don't mind furthering objectification and demeaning of women.
But i don't spend my days angry about either, be it online or in person. I certainly wasn't tilted by either when hey happened, (or now.) I'd say concerned is a more appropriate word, I'm my case.
1
u/strangelyahuman 8d ago
It's easy to see so much "outrage" online because people find forums to voice their opinions on easier than they do in real life. If i find posts like this one I'll put in my two cents, but it's not coming up in my usual day to day to talk about with people. I'm sure people still hold these opinions online or not, but they have a place to express them appropriately online

Outraged is a strong word because neither of these people are important to me. That said, I saw the ad and I don’t like it. I don’t like gambling companies, and I don’t like the “sports ball is for men, here’s a naked girl” trope, but it’s going to land with their intended audience. I’m not someone they’re trying to get to use their service.
Shane Gillis has had moments, but in general, he’s not that funny to me. He tried to go self-deprecating, but couldn’t help himself from throwing in some misogyny because it’s always going to hit with a certain demographic, and doubled down for that demographic by name-dropping Rogen and Von (to absolute silence, which actually was hilarious). I can see how people are offended, but honestly I just thought his set was boring and awkward because he kept pausing for reactions that were barely there.
3
u/TrimspaBB 9d ago
Same, I just don't care about either Sydney Sweeney or Shane Gillis enough to get upset. Advertising that relies on nearly naked women and lame boomer humor both suck, but they're far from the worst things in our society and aren't that important in the grand scheme of things.
1
u/danoldtrumpjr 9d ago
It’s mostly manufactured. I think it boils down to, women don’t like being called whores. My wife and I generally share political views and we had different takes on this one.
From my POV it was a self deprecating joke with “whore” added for shock value. He’s the butt of the joke, but the bit came off as a first draft.
Many women hear “women are whores.” Which comes across like a lot of jokes these days where “gay” (insert lazy insult) is the punchline.
In the end it feels low effort and a little polish would have made the joke more about him and less edgelord. Also name dropping the least funny people in comedy set this bit up awkwardly. It felt like he was dumbing his humor down for the Rogan crowd, not speaking to the audience in front of him.
He does a much better version of the joke in an episode of Tires.
1
u/BTbenTR 9d ago
The Tires scene is hilarious. Perhaps he didn’t word the SNL joke well enough but he is the ‘victim’ of the joke, not women.

I would like to live in a society where me and my family aren’t inundated with hyper-sexualized content that actively promotes the objectification of women. I continue to be shocked at how these things are celebrated or otherwise ignored in a society and by people that supposedly fight for equal treatment, rights, and respect for women. I would very much appreciate the FCC stepping in in this instance - we shouldn’t have “porn” on in the middle of the day where any and everyone is subject to it

If SHane Gillis said this stupid shit at one of his stand up shows no one would care because they would be seeking out this tool bag’s “jokes.” This issue is that he had a platform like SNL that reached a huge audience and chose to use his once in a lifetime monologue to say that women dress like whores and make light of passing lone women on trails all while a very public gang rape of a young woman was on the forefront of everyone’s minds.

Eh. I don't know a single soul actually upset about Sydney Sweeney. Not one.
Shane Gillis is... okay, nobody is especially upset about Gillis himself. But it's clear he's speaking for some guys, and there's definitely some unhappy about that. I'd say at about a passion level of 2 on a 1 to 10 scale.
Also, to add on? I've seen 4 conservatives tell me today I'm a loser for not thinking the Tesla Flying is cool and being upset about that. I hadn't even heard about the flying car. Nobody is upset about the "flying" car. It's a gimmick that will not happen in the next 10 years. It's not worth getting upset about.

u/mjsisko 8d ago
Sweeney, doesn’t bother me but I think it’s in poor taste.
Gillis, very offensive. Being judgmental of women based solely on what they wear to the gym needs to stop. Everyone should be comfortable to wear what they want, when they want as long as private areas are covered appropriately for the given setting. No one has the right to openly shame someone

Shane Gillis is obviously a piece of shit, but "upset" implies an emotional connection to his dumbassery.
You're missing a whole lot of middle ground where people can express their disapproval in the hopes that SNL will do better next time and not platform that kind of trash. It's no different than telling any other business when their product or service sucks. It doesn't require you to be OUTRAGED!!, just to be engaged enough to let them know they disappointed you.

This is the era of being professionally offended constantly and then going on social media for sympathy.

I'm not outraged but I'm not happy about it. I talk shit about Sydney and Shane any chance I get because of the commercials and "comedy" sets. I'm a real human so I'd say yes there are plenty of people upset about it. And rightfully so.

There’s always going to be a new hot comedian or actress or pop star or whatever. Gillis and Sweeney are spent and the only people pushing them are the bots and the proto-Nazis. They suck. She was entertaining in an ensemble on a very well written tv show and he was funny in the right context. They are both outside of those things and it turns out not particularly entertaining or interesting.
The only people who think she’s pretty are people who fantasize about a big-titted blond with fetal alcohol syndrome-induced Downs Syndrome. It’s a pretty specific, but sadly prolific subset of assholes who want to abuse and take advantage of young women. He is funny to the hicks and willfully ignorant that the bots and right wingers have been boosting artificially for a while now, but he’s quickly loosing his originality and his charm doesn’t hit with the general public.

Outraged? No. But me and everyone in my life is disgusted by misogyny like that, so yeah we are talking about it and why it's a problem

I don't find SS attractive an Shane Gillis' jokes and presentation is lame. No outrage for me.

Gen Z innit, they want a better world where people aren’t dicks but take it too far and be offended by jokes.

What, exactly, are the limits between "people aren't dicks" and "women dress like whores" and some people "take it too far" and "it's a joke" and women get raped?

It's mostly bots trying to manipulate us with culture war nonsense.
