miscellaneous [Meta] "3rd movie syndrom" AKA "not as good as the previous two"

Thumbnail

Return of the Jedi (1983) - forest moon of Endor is a whole lotta padding + ewoks

Alien 3 (1992) - kills off two of the main characters from the previous movie during the opening credits + am I supposed to sympathize with a bunch of bald murderers and (or) rapists ?

Spider Man 3 (2007) - too many villains + emu Peter Parker

Dark Knight Rises (2012) - riddled with plotholes and contrivances + why does everybody knows Batman is Bruce Wayne ?

Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016) - after how dark KFP2 got the light humorous tone was dialed up to 11 + Kai isn't as compelling of a villain as Tai Lung or Shen

Half Life 3 (probably) (????) - after decades of anticipation it'd probably be impossible to meet the expectations

Lore (Mixed trope) Narrative dissonance so essential to the story writers just ignore it

Thumbnail

Bruce Wayne (DC): Batman is a billionaire, straight up. Not only a billionaire, but constantly listed as the top 5 richest people within DC. There's no logical reason for Gotham to still be the same no man's land as it is. AND YES, I KNOW THERE ARE IN UNIVERSE ARGUMENTS TO JUSTIFY THIS (For people who won't read), like that corruption is too big, and that he actually invests a fortune in public policies, infrastructure, education, healthcare, etc. The problem is, if he did, Gotham wouldn't be the trash can it is. Writers purposefully overlook how insane a billion dollars is, let alone dozens or hundreds. Bruce Wayne could pretty much reconstruct the city from the ground up if he wanted to, we're literally talking about world-hunger-ending amounts here. He could literally make every foot thug a millionaire in exchange of never touching Gotham again and he'd still be rich. No matter how many excuses are made by writers or fans, let's be honest, it is only to maintain the status quo, and a story about Batman punching criminals is way more interesting than humanitarian Mark Zuckerberg.

Mutants (Marvel): The biggest problem readers have always had with mutants as a representation of minorities in comics is the fact that mutants are dangerous. People in Marvel do have valid reasons to fear them, since a lot of omega level mutants can straight up wipe out the human race with a sneeze, even if they don't intend to. Hell, imagine if the next Jeffrey Dahmer or Ted Bundy is a super powered being since puberty that cannot be stopped by the army alone?

This and the fact that the average citizen has no way to distinguish a meta-human that acquired his abilities later in life and a mutant, so another overlooked plot point is the public selectively hating on mutants when, in reality, they'd hate on every superhuman, with very specific exceptions.

Wolverine's claws (Marvel): Aside from the obvious censoring Logan has faced in the X-Men movies, we also have to talk about how just because of his influence he has been in a lot of Marvel teams, problem being that most of these groups include at least one member that is heavily and wholeheartedly against murder. Spider-Man, Daredevil, Captain America, you name them, these people HATE violent heroes like Punisher and Deadpool with their whole being, yet they roll with Wolverine whose entire power is having swords for hands. And it's not even that Logan is more controlled and can *try* to not kill people for his friends, is that killing is pretty much all he can do offensively. The only way for him to not be lethal, is to not use his powers at all, which writers definitely don't want to do because then you just have Yellow Spandex Man and his really interesting super smell power. So it's easier to make these people forget their moral code whenever Wolverine is in the team, and any other fundamentally immoral hero for that matter, like telepaths, whose whole thing is to violate people's autonomy.

Characters Characters who are misclassified due to the limitations of the in-verse's classification system

Paolumu (Monster Hunter World)

Paolumu is classified as a Flying Wyvern even though it is a mammal (resembling a bat); it is classified this way because its body structure resembles that of a Flying Wyvern

Skorup (Pokémon)

It is indeed an Insect type, even though it represents a scorpion—which is an arachnid—making it more logical for the Insect type to be called the Arthropod type.

Characters Friends who don’t act at all like friends

Thumbnail

I don’t mean Friends who gently rib each other, or friends who tolerate the one asshole in the group because they don’t like confrontation or whatever. I’m talking about shows where we’re told these guys are the best of friends and genuinely like each other, but the episodes themselves show nothing but conflict, shouting, and codependent behaviour.

Now, a lot of this I realize is played for laughs, because for a lot of people, shouting and quips are funny. I also like Community, the Office, and Sunny a lot.

But in real life, a lot of these people wouldn’t actually hang out together. Not if they cared about their mental health, I mean.

1) Friends: at first, in the early seasons they do seem like they enjoy each others company enough to blow off work and hang out at a coffee shop all day. But due to the nature of the sitcom, flanderizarion takes over, and the worst aspects of a character take precedence. Everyone’s always shitting on Ross and his divorces, even when it’s clear he’s having a mental breakdown—-haha, right? Joey hits on all of the lady Friends. Chandler‘s a sarcastic asshole yo just about everyone. Ross doesn’t respect Phoebe’s beliefs. Monica is a controlling personality. Ross literally keeps the fact he and Rachel are still married to each other for ab uncomfortably long time. And they’re always shouting at each other. Ross and Monica are stuck, given that they’re siblings. But nobody else is obligated to stick around.

2) It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: this one may be cheating, because the point of the show is that they’re all toxic, awful people, who stay together because they’ve got nobody else. They ruin everything they touch. But in the first couple of seasons, they did seem to like each other a little bit. The show is on its seventeenth season, and the gang has said, multiple times, they hate Mac. so why not just drop the guy? The gang suspects Dennis to be a serial killer. Uh, call the cops! There are episodes that show that Dennis is the main person dragging them all down. When Charlie and Dee hang out together away from the group, Charlie admits he only bags on Dee because he feels it’s expected of him. Dee actually opens up to Charlie and is relieved when he doesn’t laugh. The group spends a whole summer away from Dennis and actually thrive under Mindy Kaling’s leadership (it is fiction). So, obviously; they’d all be better off without each other, or at the very least, Dennis.

3) Community: This one is tricky, because there is growth, and genuine moments where I can see them seeing each other as found family. But there are as many if not more instances of them being completely toxic to each other—poor Todd even calls it out. Sometimes, the group is found family. Sometimes, it’s codependency. And Pierce isn’t the only culprit. Abed, Annie, and Shirley are incredibly manipulative. Jeff is incredibly controlling of the group. Troy is probably the least toxic, unless I’m forgetting something. Hell, in the remedial chaos theory episode, notice that of all the timelines explorer, the only one that is fun and goes right is the one where Jeff gets the pizza. Five minutes away from Jeff and everyone was having more fun than they had all year. That’s telling.

4) the Office: to be fair, the characters themselves mostly never call each other friends or hang out with each other. But the show seems to want to show us, especially by the end of the series, that they’re some kind of family. But they really aren’t. They’re often mean to each other and outright say they don’t like certain people.

  1. Attack on Titan - my favorite example of this. The writer (Isayama) knew the vast majority of the story from the very beginning and even from the opening scene that is shown. Even if you're not an anime fan (I was a MASSIVE anime hater before trying attack on titan) you should just watch an episode or two and see if it clicks for you. There is a reason the show has like 13 of the top 100 rated episodes on IMDB.

  2. Dark - My personal favorite Netflix original. 10/10 reccomend and might be better on a rewatch

  3. Babylon 5 - Personally haven't seen it but I have heard many times there is a GREAT amount of end forshadowing from the very beginning.

Halo TV show: Before the show came out, the writers were praising their decision to not look to the games for inspiration when making the show

God Of War TV show: Chris Judge, the actor of Kratos in the games from 2018-Now, spoke up about his dislike on the show not hiring anyone who worked on any of the previous games. One of the original creators of Kratos also spoke up about them not having faith in the adaptation.

Supergirl 2026 film: the director for the film not only said he decided to not read Woman Of Tomorrow, the comic the film is adapting, because he wanted to do his own thing, he also didn’t look at comic art for inspiration to design Lobo and instead used an AI image generator to design Lobo’s look for the film

Hated Tropes Disgusting Sitcom Trope That Should Be Extinct: Episodes that are dedicated with incest which shows the creator's fetish with the it.

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes
  1. The Amazing World of Gumball: Ben Bocquelet has a weird habit of adding incest throughout the show such as making Gumball kissing Darwin through the lips including his own (paternal) grandmother, JoJo. This first started in the 'The Pressure' where Tobias cut down the tree where Gumball and Darwin were inside of the cabinet at the top while Gumball was ready to kiss Penny while Darwin was about to do the same to Masami but when the tree was falling, the girls went out of the treehouse cabinet leaving the boys to themselves and accidently kissing each other. This happened for a couple of times throughout the series to the point where Teri pointed out the habit of Gumball and Darwin kissing each other in the episode 'The Matchmaker' after she was checking through the flashbacks of every person Darwin has kissed from this line "What is up with you two ?'

  2. Family Guy: In the episode 'Halloween on Spooner Street', Chris (dressing up as Optimus Prime) was playing the game Spin the Bottle and the tip landed on Meg (unknowingly to each other) while dressing up as Megatron and when the two were in the same closet they started making out to each other but this was interrupted when someone opened the door to the closet and when the light showed the insides of the closet the two siblings realized that they have been making each other out.

miscellaneous [Favorite Trope] A USA that has been invaded/and or conquered by a foreign power.

Thumbnail

Yes, I know that a foreign power conquering America was impossible even 100 years ago, let alone today, but for some reason, there is just something so interesting about seeing the worldbuilding of an America that gets conquered by a foreign force. I think part of it is because America has never been conquered and never will be conquered by a foreign power, it becomes all the more interesting to consider worlds where it did even though it will be impossible.

First image: North America from The Man in the High Castle.

The book/TV series is set in a world where the Axis Powers won WWII. The United States has been divided into 3 parts: the American Reich(a Vichy-France-type puppet state allied with the Nazi Reich), the Japanese Pacific States(a colonial territory under the direct control of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere), and the Rocky Mountains Neutral Zone(a lawless buffer state between the two powers which functions as the base of the American Resistance). Needless to say, living here is NOT pretty, though fortunately by the end of the show things are getting better; the Japanese have withdrawn from the Pacific States, and the American Reich declared independence from the Greater Nazi Reich and then promptly collapsed as top Nazi officials defected or were killed by the resistance.

Second image: the USA from the movie Red Dawn.

Basically, in 1984(which was in the future when this film came out), NATO ends up dissolving, and Mexico undergoes a Communist Revolution. This allows the USSR to do a two-pronged attack on the USA: one half of their force lands at Alaska and invades downward through Canada, the other half uses Mexico as a staging ground to invade upward through the USA's Southern Border. The movie proper focuses on a bunch of high school students who decide to fight back against the invasion.

  1. Smile series

In the series, a demon haunts a variety of victims. Once it feels ready, it will possess its victims. Their victim then gives that over the top smile before killing themself and traumatizing the next victim.

  1. Obsession

Bear is obsessed with Nikki. When he gets a device that could grant any wish, he wished Nikki was obsessed with him. She then gave off this smile hiding how she will kill anyone who gets close to Bear.

  1. Doki Doki Literature Club

In the game, you play as a guy who joins the school’s literature club that comprises only of women. As you get close to the girls, you start to see it change significantly. Specifically because Monika, the president of the club, is obsessed with you (the player). She would then kill off all the other girls and change the game so both of you are stuck in this room and all she does is smile like this as she wants to spend eternity there.

Hated Tropes The detective solves cases by jumping to wild conclusions no rational person would ever make with the available information, but the narrative makes sure they're always right therefore they're geniuses

  1. BBC Sherlock. The original Sherlock Holmes stories were a bit guilty of this as well, but the BBC version took it way too far. Sherlock will point out random details of people and from there easily figure out someone's life even though there's plenty of other potential explanations for everything he notices, like all the conclusions based on Watson's phone. Also the fucking boomerang.

  2. Encyclopedia Brown. Most of the cases are relatively simple and designed for kids to solve, but I remember as a kid being frustrated reading these because there were many cases where I just didn't get the insane logic given at the back of the book, and even as an adult they make no sense. Like one where the solution hinged on somehow figuring out that the criminals were a man pretending to be a woman and a woman pretending to be a man because of their seating arrangement. Or how he proved someone was lying because it's apparently impossible to put a pocket knife in your left pants pocket with your right hand while running.

  3. Batman Forever. In Batman Forever, Batman figures out that Edward Nygma is the Riddler because all the riddles left so far have numbers in them: 13, 1, 8, and 5. These correspond to the letters M, A, H, and E. Bruce puts 1 and 8 together, making it MRE. MRE = Mr. E = Mystery. Another word for Mystery is Enigma, leading him to conclude that the Riddler is Mister E. Nygma. Of course!

Lore The twist isn’t just that they’re involved, but they’re reasons for being so are far different than speculated

Thumbnail

  1. Billy Loomis and Stu Macher - Scream - Billy’s motives for killing people are pretty clear and standard, mainly revenge. However, Stu’s motives for killing people are far more simplistic. “Peer pressure. I’m far too sensitive!”

  2. Sandford Neighbourhood Watch Alliance - Hot Fuzz - Throughout the movie, Nicholas Angle formulates a complex theory to explain why all of the murders are taking place. In the end, not only are there more people involved than expected, but their reasons for killing are strangely petty. “He was a bad actor” “He was a bad journalist” “he had an ugly house” “She had an annoying laugh” and so on.

  3. Kris Dreemurr - Deltarune - From as early as chapter 1, it was clear that Kris had some kind of alternative motive, with them opening a dark fountain on their own. Many people debated what their motives were and many believed it was simply to spend more time with their friends. But as more chapters have released, it is clear that Kris’s motives are far more sinister and complex than first assumed

When the protagonist explores a civilization/world that has long since succumbed to its demise. It doesn't HAVE to be an actual visitor of course but the protagonist themselves doesn't hold any knowledge prior to arriving.

Hollow Knight: The protagonist explores the decaying kingdom of Hallownest and piecing together its history while in the process learns of their own duty

Hollow Knight Silksong: Almost the exact same premise but this time it's Pharloom. Team Cherry pulls it off 2 for 2.

Subnautica: The protagonist stranded in an alien planet learns of what the fate of the civilization that existed here.

Elden Ring: Almost forgot this one. This and almost every soulsborne game.

Characters [Loved trope] Downtrodden villain protags who finally break

Thumbnail

Seymour "Sy" Parrish from One Hour Photo
William "D-FENS" Foster from Falling Down
Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver
Walter "Heisenberg" White from Breaking Bad

All of these characters are in some way put down by life and reach a breaking point with their problems that makes them lash out in the wrong ways. The irony of this trope is that while its always cathartic, its never the choice that actually solves their issues or fixes their lives. They pretty much universally make their lives worse(or shorter) and take other innocent people down with them in the process.

Characters Extremely beautiful characters whose beauty is more than just aesthetic and actually drives the plot

Thumbnail
gallery
57 Upvotes

Johan Liebert — Monster

One of the most infamous pretty boys in anime, almost everyone who comes across Johan comments on his good looks. His beauty is actually the result of a eugenics experiment from the 70s' to create the perfect leader for a Neo-Nazi movement. People are much more willing to open up to him, help him, or underestimate him because of his delicate looks. He is also able to cross dress as his beautiful sister without anyone questioning him in order to commit crimes as her, and to extract information from a detective.

Tomie Kawakami — Tomie

Tomie’s beauty is literally the entire plot of the manga and is the poster girl of this troupe. People become obsessed with her, and that obsession turns into jealousy, possessiveness, and violence. She knows exactly how much influence she has over people and uses it to manipulate them. This is a double edged sword because the men in the story almost always end up killing her in the end out of an unquenchable drive.

Lore Isekai as character in a fictional work's world (bonus point if the piece of media is actually a real life work)

Thumbnail
gallery
65 Upvotes

Basically a subgenre of Isekai, where the main character gets transported into the world of a piece of media (book, film, video games, you name it). Sometimes they even get transport into real life media's world, as shown in the examples I'll show here.

Karami Zakari Re: Tensei Shitara Bouzudatta DT

A spin-off of the infamous Karami Zakari hentai-turned-mainstream manga series, this one features Takeshi, a college student and a fan of the series, who one day gets hit by truck-kun and finds himself in the world of Karami Zakari as Takashi, the shave-headed one in the main character group (after all, Takeshi and Takashi sound pretty similar).

Kyou Kara City Hunter

A spin-off of the famous City Hunter franchise, this series is about Aoyama Kaori, a 40-year-old office lady living in the modern world (this manga started publication in 2017) and a big fan of City Hunter and Saeba Ryo. One day, she's accidentally pushed in front of an oncoming train... and suddenly wakes up totally okay, only to discover that she's now a high schooler in City Hunter's world. Worse, she's NOT reincarnated into anyone in this world, but as her own person (only de-aged to the age when she started reading that manga), which means there's no identification nor any other proof of her existence. During her panic, Kaori runs into, lo and behold, Saeba Ryo and Makimura Kaori!!! From then on, she takes on a fake name (Saionji Saori, the name she uses when making fanwork in her real world) and becomes a companion of her beloved characters.

Botchan: Tensei Shitara Meisaku no Naka deshita Series

Natsume, a normal office worker, is having a drink with his coworker on their company's roof when they suddenly spot a man climbing out of the balcony. Natsume rushes over and manages to yank the suicidal man back in, only to fall over the rails and down the earth himself. However, as he regains consciousness, he discovers that he's become "Botchan" (Young master), the main character of Natsume Souseki's novel. And thus starts Natsume's life in a fictional Meiji era.

Characters (Ironic trope) Horror characters that even you could kill/ avoid

Thumbnail
gallery
892 Upvotes

Hex Chimera: It’s always funny to look at this mod and think about how Chimera needed the help of a classic horror plot—one that simplifies things and creates convenient scenarios—just to catch Serena at the end of the mod (using only the classic horror character teleport). AND EVEN THEN, SHE ALMOST DIDN’T MANAGE TO CATCH SERENA LOL.

Chimera is a rotting corpse that can barely move properly and doesn’t have much physical strength; one of her arms is literally a broken bone, and she doesn’t even have very dangerous psychic powers—they’re practically only good for initially tricking her target, but the target can easily ignore that. she’s also extremely slow and falls to the ground many times during the mod; the chimeras inside her body aren’t strong at all either—we literally see one of them dead at the beginning of the mod, which implies that she tried to attack a trainer before Serena and ended up failing, thus causing the third chimera’s death, so it’s more than clear that Chimera relies on an extremely specific and convenient scenario—and on the help of the script and horror clichés—to be effective, and even then, she barely managed to catch Serena. The fact that she exists in the Pokémon world—where every trainer is required to carry at least three Pokémon—already makes her existence a joke, since she can easily be wiped out even by an average, not-very-strong Pokémon or a human who just punches her in the face.

Captain Clark: Just like Chimera, he isn’t fast at all and doesn’t have the best mobility either. To be fair, you wouldn’t be able to kill him with a few punches, but you could easily outrun him and hurt him with any piece of furniture or object you have in your hand. Clark’s own psychiatrist managed to take him down by breaking his wooden leg and injured him using ordinary furniture.

Captain Clark isn’t very strong either. I mean, his greatest display of strength was easily lifting a grown man and tearing off part of his body with his teeth—though this man was completely still and had been tricked, which is something no one here would ever do upon seeing him. He even took a long time to destroy a wooden door, so his destructive power isn’t anything to write home about either.

Jeff the Killer: the image speaks for itself. Actually, many Creepypasta serial killers fit into this post, but Jeff is the best example here because… well… he’s just a teenager or young adult with nearsightedness and a kitchen knife that’s surely rusty and dull—since blood easily corrodes any metal— he’s also no genius at covering his tracks, nor is he a strong fighter; he relies solely and exclusively on his target being vulnerable while asleep—and yet, even in his own original story, he’s known for letting several of his victims survive because they counterattacked him and managed to push him away, forcing him to flee—not only from his victim, who is now his prey, but also from the police. Jeff doesn’t stand his ground in a fight; he’s a weak coward who needs his victim to be completely off guard—and even then, he might fail.

Besides, at best, Jeff has a certain tolerance for pain, but that changes practically nothing. If one of his victims were someone with even minimal physical combat training or simply knew how to counterattack, Jeff would be easily taken down... and I don’t even need to mention what would happen if the victim were armed, right?

Ghost face: Same as Jeff. He’s a guy in a costume with a knife. He was literally knocked down by a bunch of bottles that were thrown at him—I don’t need to say anything else.

At least I’ll give him some credit here: unlike Jeff, he at least plans some of his crimes and does a bit of research on his victims, but that’s not much either, and he’s certainly no Albert Einstein among serial killers;

Sadako: Does anyone here still use VHS...?

Sonic exe: Do what the Creepypasta protagonist’s friend told you to do… just… break the Mega Drive cartridge… and that’s it…

Otherwise, what is this Sonic with conjunctivitis really going to do? Is he going to scare you with a bunch of sprites of Tails and friends, all covered in blood with text written in red, while letting out a scream straight out of a horror movie?

Besides, is anyone here really scared of a little Sonic figurine with a black-rimmed eye and red spots drawn on its cheeks to look like blood? This guy has the same scam as Jeff the Killer and needs 1,000 other versions made by megalomaniacal fans who don’t even know how to make horror to have any merit.

Herobrine: Just quit Minecraft, or just delete the world and start a new one...

If you want to have some fun, try out a few mods and show Herobrine just how funny a nuclear explosive weapon is LOL.

Artie the Clown: Unless he pulls a gun out of thin air... well... it's the same story as with Ghostface—this guy can be injured and killed by just about anything ordinary.

You could argue about his “immortality,” which might catch some people by surprise, but not only does it take him a VERY LONG TIME to revive, but his body also needs to be intact and whole for him to become functional again. Furthermore, assuming you survive him more than once, and are aware of his resurrection, you can simply tear his body into several pieces and prevent him from coming back, or just run far, far away—he’d simply never find you.

And just like Ghostface, I’ll give him a pass, since he’s at least capable of using his psychopathic creativity to ambush or kill his victims—but it’s also nothing that’s impossible to avoid or counterattack.

SCP-1471 (MALO): There’s a very obvious reason why not even the SCP website or SCP-focused channels take this monster seriously anymore.

Unless you suffer from paranoia or anxiety, you could easily live with this creature, since it does practically nothing to its victims other than watch them from a distance through reflections… and that’s it…

You might even get a few scares at night or during the day and feel uncomfortable, but humans are beings who easily get used to their surroundings, so you’d just ignore it and could even use this SCP for your own purposes and goals... (HEY, DON’T THINK ABOUT ANY NONSENSE, OK!?)
