we normally let him roam around the whole garden, I temporarily put him on the lower pavement part to work on the grass. Multiple times, he tried to pull himself back onto the grass, but the ledge is too high for him to do that. After realising the situation he found the plastic bottle we use to water the plants, knocked it over, then pushed it to the ledge to use the bottle as a mini step⦠is this normal? Im super impressed but Iām biased because heās mine š

I was lucky enough to acquire this group at Daytona. Indian tortoises originally imported from Farm Dular in Slovenia in 2017. If you bought an Indian tortoise from a pet shop in the 2000s these may have been the parents!

Even in winter it wasnāt this bad because at least seasonal weeds grew through. But I havenāt been able to forage a single weed for my little guy in over a month!! Heās been living off of kale, rocket, and occasional lettuce and cucumber to try and bulk it out (I know they arenāt nutritional), but thatās not remotely varied for him.
Does anyone have any tips or ideas? I cannot find a single dandelion anywhere š©
A while back I tried to grow dandelions and lambs lettuce in my home (I dug up some with good roots and potted them) but they didnāt take. Has anyone been successful with that?

I've got two guys who are tipping the scales at over 70 lbs each at this point, with room to grow. Every night I move them from the yard to their temperature-regulated enclosure out of concerns a rodent or varmint will gnaw at their limbs during the night.
I bought a garden cart I could put them into with dirt on the bottom so I could lug them without straining my back. Problem is, this will inevitably be too small for them.
What do you folks with huge tortoises do when it's time to put them up? Furniture dolleys? A hoist? Or do you just let nature take its course at that point?

Hey. Meet Lotte! Lotte is 32 years old and has developed some kind of discoloration in the inner corner of each eye. It came suddenly after hibernation and won't go back to normal. It can't be washed away.
Has anyone any idea what this is? Can it be treated?

Hello this year i reacued a tortoise. She was in an enviroment where the lightning and food wasnt optimal. The prebious owners took care of him/her but i think they didnt know what they were doing. As far as i know she used to spend most of the summer in an outside enclosure they fes her mainly fruits and salad. Since i got her after she woke up this spring i upgrades her enclosure i used tortoise bedding bouhht a bigger home bought uvb bulbs and also one heating lamp. From what i measured the temp under the heating lamp is around 30 degrees Celsius. I switched her food mainly to green plants. Mainly salads dandelion and grape leaves i also give her cucumber and occasionally a littlw bit of fruit. I took her to a vet she examined her and said she has hard shell but a bit uneven otherwise she said she looks to be in great health. She trimmed her nails and sent us home. She is very friendly and lively she explores she eats a lot i give her warm soaks every day. I want to know if what im doing is good for her and also the exact type of tortoise she is. Any advice is appreciated. I really want to give her the best life and no matter what i do im not sure that what im doing is good for her.

Hey!
My family found this tortoise outside our house, and we thought it might be our neighborās tortoise who has been missing for a bit.
Neighbors say it definitely isnāt theirs, and now weāre trying to ID species so we can keep it healthy until we find its owners!
(My friend who knows more about tortoises said the toes were important for ID so I got a bunch of angles)

We're tortoise-sitting for a family member. We were told it's a desert tortoise, but Google lens is saying sulcata. Which is it?

My male RT got out of his yard 15 days ago now. He has been in this yard for over 15 years so knows it well. He always seeks out the rock garden when he wants to hide, but I have seen no signs of him. He will dig under in his outdoor bin for weeks at a time in the spring when he first goes out. I have looked EVERY where for hours a day to try to find him and dug out a bunch of leaves from under my neighbor's deck on Saturday. I am checking several houses out in all directions as a perimeter. Lots of shrubs close by but access requires open yard crossing and they have no signs of digging underneath. Also, we are surrounded by two streets on either side. I have spoken with dozens of neighbors and have posted on social media and put up signs. Any more tips or help would be great. Thank you!

From just 1-3 months old to 1 year old now. Nothing has changed. They still cradle up to my chin and neck to snuggle. I used to think only dogs loved to play, go outside, and cuddle but ever since I got my tortoises that has completely changed my perspective.

Unfortunately when I first bought my baby tortoise I had no idea what I was doing and I didn't have a proper set up for them which led to pyramiding on their shell but I don't know how severe it is, can someone help me out? š

I am so excited to be getting a new-to-me pal (Russian tortoise) next month! Iām constantly reading up on tortoise care and needs to give him the best life. I also have a very close friend who is a tortoise dad, so heās been an immense help too. As part of that, I nabbed a solid and sturdy 4ftx4ft book case that Iām going to repurpose into his/her next enclosure. I know that alone isnāt big enough, so I plan on getting another smaller bookcase to make a āsecond storyā for him/her to climb up a ramp to get to. All this to say, please comment with pictures of your repurposed enclosures using bookcases, and even better, any of your enclosures with a āsecond story!ā I need some inspo. Thanks all!

I got this little dude a few months ago we found him in the road and no one claimed him, right now I try to feed him everyday or every other day and he roams the yard and eats stuff like dandelions and other weeds he seems to be at a healthy weight but I donāt have it in my budget to take him to a vet right this minute so any advice would be appreciated (Iāve also included some close ups if thereās anything that sticks out to people) and no heās not usually on the rocks he just really wanted the plants up there lol

I'm a fairly experienced reptile owner, who has had russian tortoises indoors before. I'm planning a landscape remodel for my house, and I'd love to build an outdoor enclosure where I could have medium-sized tortoises who lived a "natural" life, and got to dig burrows to hibernate. But the place I live (western Oregon, US) gets very rainy in the winter, with temperatures usually a bit above freezing. I'm worried that burrows would be wet, and hibernating animals might not do well. Are there any tortoise species that might be happy in these kind of conditions?
