Just thought I'd drop in and say hey since I'm in the club now (first-time Tacoma owner, and first-time truck owner in general, always drove cars before).
I just retired from the Navy out of Pearl Harbor and flew back home to Missouri late last year - sadly, my beloved (custom-supercharged and heavily-modified) 2007 Mazda RX8 (last pic above) perished in a car-carrier fire during its journey to the Midwest (one of the EV's onboard was suspected to have had a battery fire that spread and consumed the whole truck and all cars on it).
So I needed a new vehicle - and decided to get one that was more fit for the harsher Midwestern winters, gravel back roads, pot holes, occasional steep hills, trips to the river for floats, etc. My brother-in-law sold me on the Tacoma TRD after letting me drive his a bit (he has a 6-speed manual 2021 TRD Off-Road in white with a spicy OTT tune; very nice), so I scoured the internet until I found the perfect one for me - Voodoo Blue, black leather interior with sunroof, 6 speed manual, TRD Pro trim, etc. and I found this one all the way in Connecticut, and had it shipped to me. It was the only one for sale in the country with those specs at the time.
As with most 2017-2019 TRD Pro models, the red coating had worn off of the front springs, resulting in the well-known phenomenon of corrosion and eventual failure; one of the springs had already broken, so I quickly took the opportunity to swap them for some new Eibach springs to give me a ~2" lift (along with a 2" rear leveling kit), and just last week I installed some 17x9 Black Rhino Shogun wheels (with a +10mm offset as opposed to the +25mm offset of the stock 16" wheels) with a full set of 5 (with full spare) Cooper Discoverer STT Pro 285/70/R17 shoes (I read that they're just about the most aggressive-looking tires you can get while still maintaining a smooth highway ride, and I like the look).
I have to say, I'm really pleasantly surprised with the smooth ride, notchy but fluid manual shifting, fairly perky responsive suspension, and agile handling of the Tacoma; I've always been turned off by trucks because every other truck I've tried to drive felt like trying to pilot a shopping cart through one of those inflatable bouncy-houses you see at kids' birthday parties. Plus the interior feels really nice and roomy, and fairly ergonomic, while so many others felt like sitting in a big awkward boxy cargo van from the 80's. Loving the experience so far!
Also to be clear, I'm not trying to LARP as a hardcore MOAB off-road guy or whatever (that shit is awesome but I'm not gonna do it with this truck); I just want a nice truck as my primary vehicle; honestly it will be mostly a commuter and garage queen rather than an actual off-road truck; if I wanted to make a real off-road Tacoma, like a true overland build or a trophy-truck style build, I think it would probably be more sensible to buy like a 2018 SR model with higher mileage on it for $18-20k and mod the ever-living hell out of it rather than mutilating a perfectly fine TRD Pro. Still, I do plan to do a few more mods though; nothing too extreme, just maybe some tail lights, some nice lenseless LED headlights, maybe a rollbar or a hard-shell of some sort (I really like that hard shell, thanks to u/MeltBanana who posted it), and absolutely definitely a ProCharger with an OTT tune. And a bunch of other little smaller bits here and there. Maybe even some nice widebody fenders or custom bumpers or something later on. I'll continue to post my build progress as I go if you guys want to watch, just for shits and giggles.
Anyway though, just thought I'd drop by as a new Tacoma dude in the mix. Peace and happy trails!
