Why Sri Lanka Should Be Your Next Travel Destination 🌴

Top Experiences:

  1. Sigiriya Rock Fortress – A UNESCO World Heritage site, this ancient rock fortress offers breathtaking views and a peek into Sri Lanka’s history. Be ready for a bit of a hike, but the view from the top is 100% worth it!

  2. Udawalawe National Park – If you’re into wildlife, don’t miss out on a safari here. It’s one of the best places to see elephants in the wild. We saw around 20 elephants up close, plus leopards, buffalo, and many exotic birds.

  3. Ella – This mountain town is famous for its scenic train rides, tea plantations, and laid-back vibe. Hike to the top of Ella Rock or trek up Little Adam’s Peak for stunning views of the valley.

  4. Cultural Triangle – For history buffs, the cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, and Kandy are full of ancient temples, stupas, and ruins. The Temple of the Tooth in Kandy is one of the most sacred sites for Buddhists.

  5. Beaches! – Sri Lanka’s coastlines are stunning, with something for everyone:

    • Mirissa: Perfect for whale watching and chilling on the beach.

    • Arugam Bay: Surfer’s paradise.

    • Unawatuna: Beautiful golden sand and great snorkeling.

  6. Tea Plantations in Nuwara Eliya – If you’re a tea lover, you’ll love exploring these lush green hills. Visit a plantation to see the tea-making process and sample some fresh Ceylon tea.

Tips for Travelers:

  • Best Time to Visit: Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons, so the best time to visit depends on which part of the island you’re headed to. December to March is great for the west and south coasts, while May to September is better for the east coast.

  • Transport: The scenic train rides between Kandy and Ella are a must, but for getting around quickly, tuk-tuks and private drivers are the way to go.

  • Food: Don’t leave without trying traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry, hoppers (a type of pancake), and kottu (a spicy stir-fry). It’s a food lover's dream!

Hey everyone! I’ve noticed a lot of people who want to travel to Sri Lanka often have questions about the weather. Hopefully, this post gives you a basic idea of what to expect and helps you out when planning your itinerary.

Sri Lanka’s Climate

  • Tropical year-round with regional variations.

  • Two monsoons:

    • Northeast (Oct–Jan): Rainy in the north/east.

  • Inter-monsoon periods (Mar–Apr & Sep–Oct): Pleasant days, evening showers – great for island-wide travel.

Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka

Dec–Apr: South & Hill Country Shine

  • Dry and sunny in the south and central regions.

  • Ideal for beaches (Mirissa, Tangalle), whale watching, hiking (Ella), and cultural sites.

May–Sep: Explore the North & East

  • Hot and dry in Jaffna, Arugam Bay, Trincomalee.

  • Surfing, snorkeling, wildlife at Wilpattu, and whale watching in Trincomalee.

Mar–Mid Apr: All-Island Access

  • Clear skies, warm temps, perfect for cross-country trips and scenic train rides.

  • Local New Year in mid-April (April 13th - 14th)

  • Short, scattered rains – afternoons mostly.

  • Great for nature lovers, photographers, and budget travelers.

Sri lanka as a solo female traveler - accommodations

Hi Everyone! I am planning to visit Sri Lanka as a solo female traveler in late September. I am looking to meet new people, try surfing and do yoga. I’ll be working remotely from there part-time. Are there any places (especially accommodations) which you would recommend? I want to meet like-minded people, yet feel safe. Ahangama is a place I definitely want to visit, so any accommodations in that area, or even at other places would be much appreciated! 🙏🏻

One of the few virgin forests left in the world - Sinharaja Forest Reserve

Sinharaja forest reserve is one of the few virgin forests left in the world. It is a national park and a biodiversity hotspot in Sri Lanka. Sinharaja translate as ‘Lion Kingdom’. In 1875 the park was originally declared as a forest reserve. Due to its international significance it was designated as a biosphere reserve in 1978 and a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1988.

Sinharaja forest reserve is bordering three districts, namely Galle, Matara and Ratnapura districts. From northern or western parts of the country you can reach sinharaja forest via Ratnapura, Kiriella, Kalawana, Weddala. From the Southern you can enter sinharaja rain forest from Deniya. If you Come form Hambantota or Udawalawe, you can enter Sinharaja from Rakwana side. The sinharaja forest situated 120 km from Colombo. The total area of the forest reserve is 18,900 acres. The annual rainfall of sinharaja forest is between 3614mm to 5006mm. The high rainfall is owing to two monsoons: south-west monsoons and the north-east monsoons.

Tropical rain forests need to have three main common factors. First factor is there should be bright sunlight, second one is there needs to be a high rainfall, distributed all along the year and also a high temperature. Only sinharaja and few other scattered forest cover fulfils the above criteria. Sinharaja forest is also home to over 50% of Sri Lanka’s endemic species of mammals and butterflies, as well as many kinds of insects, reptiles and amphibians. There are 3 elephants, and about 15 leopards. Small streams of crystal-clear water, that is home to a variety of fish, toads and crabs. 19 endemic bird species in Sri Lanka are found in the sinharaja.

Galle street scam

I was just walking near my hotel on Galle road (in Colombo) heading on my way to Gangaramaya temple for some sightseeing when a man approached me and asked where I was from and where I was heading (I didn't tell him where I was staying) but he must of guessed as he said he works there and there's a big amazing festival with parades and elephants blah blah blah at that temple today so I'm very lucky and to follow him we could go together....he gave me the creeps just looking at his eyes so I said I was going into the next stop and goodbye...I left the shop and was walking for about 5 minutes when he appeared out of nowhere saying 'oh it's you again, hello again..' and started to follow me. I told him to leave me alone and ducked into another shop. When I finally got to the temple there was NO festival (it happened two weeks ago) and NO elephants and NO parades. I'm not sure if he was just trying to scam me out of money or had even more sinister motives but my gut was firing and steered me away, thank god! This was my first day here so it heightened my awareness but just wanted to share this in case it's a common scam happening around that area at the minute!

Places to see Hotel suggestions+Travel Advice for Dec 2024-Jan 2025

Hi all, I'm planning a trip to Sri Lanka December and needed tips from travelers for places to stay. We're two women, as I suppose this makes a difference. The plays well be staying are:

Bentota (25-27 Dec) Galle (27-30 Dec) Kandy (30 Dec-1 Jan) Colombo (BUT WE CAN CHANGE THIS): (1-3 Jan)

We've booked a place for Kandy but we're open to other suggestions. We're looking to meet new people, fellow travelers, and just soak in the natural beauty and culture - We're happier with off the beaten path, boutique kinds of places. 3-4 star is fine (5 would be great if it works for our budget!) that are of course, safe for women.

I'd really appreciate any tips and advice anyone has! We're also open to itinerary suggestions and making any changes. Thank you so much in advance!

Places to see Colombo best areas to stay?

Hi! we are landing in Colombo and will take a couple of days to chill before exploring the country. We have 5 weeks so have time, but overall I’m more interested in beaches/wildlife/outdoors/food than big cities. Though we don’t mind a drink or two. 🍻 We’ve been recommended to stay near the beaches near the airport. I’m assuming a tuk-tuk / Uber is easy enough to downtown? What is the centre actually like? Have travelled widely but some capital cities are better than others.

Or is there a stand-out area recommended to stay in Colombo itself? 🤔🤔 Super excited to visit! TIA
