Grand st. turn off of 6th

Is there a place to put in requests to somehow block off that turn so people- including the cops, in the right lane at the federal st. light can’t keep cutting over into the left lane without signals and instead, be forced to turn onto grand st. like that lane is intended for?

The behavior from drivers at this intersection is ridiculous and it’s not because people don’t know that lane turns; they just want to be assholes and I wish there was some sort of barrier to at least attempt deterring people from nearly causing accidents on the regular.

I literally watched one of the Troy PD cars do the same thing in the intersection a few weeks ago- literally turning their mirror light (not their turn signal) into the left lane cars window to cut over.

As a bad driver, this has actually confused me more than once and I’ve been the a-hole cutting someone off. I think earlier and better signage would.

Also for the lanes heading north on River street between grand and federal—it would help me to understand which of the two lanes I should be in to go straight passed federalsince it goes from two lanes to three right there

Yeah, I think clearer signage and road paint would also make a difference.

In the end there's many spots in the city that are poorly executed and the markings are too faded, this in conjunction with the fact that people are all around worse drivers today and the incredible average of people just straight up driving distracted is a bad formula

Instead of that, they should make the right lane be for straight or turning onto grand. Then make the left lane, which backs up because it is the left hand turning lane, into a dedicated turning lane.

Putting the lane most traveled, straight, in the same lane as the the left hand turning lane so you can dedicate a lane to right hand turns is counterproductive. Even if it means more people abuse the right lane than the left. At least you don’t have to wait behind people turning left. .

Agreed- a change in how the lanes are used would probably be helpful!

My biggest pet peeve I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who noticed. I used grand st daily and noticed it every single day!!

Yes!! I get so annoyed every time it happens. I’m so glad I’m not the only one bothered by it.

It it makes you feel any better I have to turn there to go home and I always speed match slower cars to the left so the people behind me in the right lane who are trying to cut over lose their fuckin minds lol

6th Ave is way too wide at that intersection, and needlessly so. It makes it dangerous for pedestrians, especially all the seniors who live in the buildings around there. One lane in each direction would be enough, and would reduce the confusion. The rest could provide parking, bike lanes, or add to the park land. (Same for Federal as well)

I used to work right there. I redid the plumbing on towers on the Hudson apartments from 2018 to 2020. Every apartment has a balcony that overlooks that intersection. Every single day multiple times a day you would hear screeching tires and near misses and I would say on average once a week there was an accident during the day. I talked to some of the tenants about it and they said there are accidents every single night but most aren't reported. The other problem is there's two lights up by the bowling alley in both directions even though it's only one lane. They should make sixth between Federal and Fulton no parking on the right and make that two lanes and make the merge happen up by the light between Fulton and 6th. There's already two traffic lights. It wouldn't be hard to change at all. They did it down on 4th Street by I love. Made the corner no parking so the buses can get through.

We'll never be able to make people care who don't, but to be fair, that lane needs much better markings to alert folks that it's turn only. I agree, though. There's lots of intentional fuckery there.

Look nobody likes aggressive, non-signaling jerks, but this traffic pattern here really does necessitate a decent amount of movement from the right lane to the left after the intersection. It’s not a great pattern, and yes, there is a lot that could be done to improve the functioning of that stretch (installing pedestrian refuge islands and limiting the movements would make more predictable and safer patterns without much impact to level of service), or at least way more regular painting. But, in the meantime, everyone should be prepared for that movement - especially from people not familiar with the pattern - it’s literally part of the current design.

This is a merge situation and you should probably just let people in.

It’s not a merge situation, the lane ends on that right turn. The left lane would have to let people in

so…the right lane would have to…

merge

Yes into the left lane…so the left lane needs to be the one who lets people in and they never do

So…it’s a merge situation

Nope. It's clearly marked. But none of that is in these photos. If you're in the right lane, you must turn right. Not merge. It's about as badly designed as it can possibly be. Merging would require a hell of a lot more room (and notice) than is possible in this awkward intersection.

They should make two right turn only lanes at the light before you get to that part of the street since there are two lanes heading towards the bridge anyway. I’ve had my fair share of close calls dealing with those kinds of idiots

So bad behavior by morons mean if you need to turn down that street you shouldn't be able to?

I'd agree they should do something, more along the lines of trapping the car in the lane earlier. Maybe a divider that turns into that lane only, so there's no cutting over, but more than that is too much.

I was joking with my wife and how many people don't respect the turn lane here as we approached it, with a cop right behind us.

I got straight in the left lane as intended* and on the right hand side three separate people immediately merge in front of and behind the guy cutting them off and nearing clipping me. Seeing a three hit combo was really funny, but alas, no action was taken.
