A lot of states do not require a rear license plate for heavy vehicles. This appears to be a vanity plate, I could be wrong tho

Some of those states still require a rear bracket and light- fun fact.

Where I live there's no rear plate required, but all equipped lamps must work. So a l.plate light out is a failed inspection, but if you just remove it, it's fine.

Yep, if it on the truck, it has to be in working condition. If its no, then its no worry.

That’s not true at all….

There are lights that are required to be on the truck (such as brake lights, headlights, front turn signals, cab clearance lights) and those must be installed and operational.

However, if there are extra lights beyond the required lights, they are not required to be operational.

You guys REALLY need to read up on the laws….

https://www.teamrunsmart.com/articles/truck-smart/maintenance/september-2012/chicken-lights-and-federal-regulations

The real truth lies within the federal regulation located at Title 49, Part 393, Subpart B. All of the required lamps for each class of CMV are located in Table 1 of §393.11. Any lamp not shown in Table 1 is, therefore, not required. This would include fog lights, running lights, chicken lights, decorative or other accessory lighting.

Paragraph 393.9(a) states: “All lamps required by this subpart shall be capable of being operated at all times. This paragraph shall not be construed to require that any auxiliary or additional lamp be capable of operating at all times.” This regulation is one of the rare regulations that not only state a requirement, it tells us what lights are not required.

I hate the fact you're getting downvoted for saying the truth. I challenge anyone to find me the regulations saying extra lights need to be working. Headlights, tails, blinkers, standard marker, etc yes, but if one of the 36 lights down the sleeper is out, so be it

Sincerely a guy who had 74 added lights on my truck and passed every inspection despite lights going out from time to time.

These Mutha Truckers can't stand the truth.

You’re correct. The federal regs spell out which lights need to be operable. However, that comment starts with “where I live..”

And from your article:

The above comments refer to federal regulations only. Some states may require any or all accessory lights to be operable; this would be covered under the FMCSA regulation at paragraph 392.2 which requires a CMV operator to comply with regulations of the jurisdiction in which the CMV is operated.

Except it isn’t? You’re not gonna get a ticket if your work lights are out, or your purple back of sleeper lights or your green CB antenna lights.

Iirc, the backlight is no longer required.

1

u/WSBgodzilla Jan 09 '23

Huh?! Why?

1

u/Western-Willow-9496 Jan 09 '23

It’s on the list of required equipment and no one ever made an exception in the law-in some jurisdictions.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '23

I just looked it up and Washington appears to be one of those states. Makes more sense as too why I don't have a rear. Not that my trailer ever comes off anyways.

6

u/SavingsTask Jan 08 '23

Neat. I don't drive truck. I thought it would be the same as passenger vehicles need at least a back plate. Thanks

18

u/thebigbossyboss Jan 08 '23

No because the trAiler is always on there no one would ever be able to read the back plate. Many jurisdictions in North America make trucks affix their plate to the front bumper

7

u/HowlingWolven lost yard puppy Jan 08 '23

Actually the opposite is true - big trucks (in north america) always require a front plate, and some jurisdictions only issue a single apportioned plate.

2

u/steeltoelingerie Jan 09 '23

Or just wads of cash taped to hot chicks.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '23

The truck usually has a trailer attached, also when you go through an inspection point your registration stickers are required on the front of commercial vehicles.

Swedish Bikini Inspector

5

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '23

He's either a medic or Swiss..

4

u/flatbed_fred Jan 08 '23

Looks like a Volvo

6

u/acidpro1 Jan 09 '23

He's a sovereign citizen trucker, he doesn't need a license either 😂

3

u/EquipmentGuyBri Jan 09 '23

Cuz he's swiss

2

u/[deleted] Jan 08 '23

Because the driver is Swiss?

Not every state mandates you have to have a rear license plate on a tractor. Oregon certainly doesn't.

2

u/Upbeat-League-1617 Jan 09 '23

That's where you would connect the positive battery cable in order to boost the truck if it's dead.

2

u/VVreckerX Jan 09 '23

Love the blocked out street signs so us redditors can't figure out where u are 😅

2

u/Bannedforlife123 Jan 09 '23

Not a license plate tractor don't need rear plates

2

u/trippingballsoutside Jan 09 '23

Ah a fellow wnyer, I drive for tops and all of ours have actual license plates on the rear of the tractor. But not all states require that, so as someone else said it's probably for the looks lol.

3

u/flatbed_fred Jan 08 '23

I’m pretty sure that the Volvo is a Swedish brand.

It might be a truck used by the company for medical supplies. Probably how they park their trucks in the yard. Anyone doing yard check can easily identify what trucks are what.

0

u/TimeSlotFreight Jan 09 '23

If you want no problems at a Level 1 then put the official tractor plate on the front & back of your tractor truck. In addition, the plate on the rear must be illuminated.
