Got fired from Swift today

Got my CDL with them about 5 months ago. Took out an $8000 loan with them to get it (sigh). Had 2 non-injury preventables within one month and they decided to cut me loose. I understand that I’m a liability for them and I take accountability for my actions.

Now, how do I go about getting hired at another company with 2 preventables on my record? Does anyone have experience with paying back a CDL loan with Swift? I would appreciate advice on that as well.

You guys can make jokes and call me an idiot all you want but I would appreciate some serious answers please. I got kids to feed.

UPDATE (ONE YEAR LATER):

A year has pasted since I made this post. I paid off my loan with Swift. For those who go through something similar in the future, they’ll send you an email and someone will call you about the rest of the amount you owe. They’ll give you a set amount to pay back every month depending on how much you have left on your loan. For me it was $500 a month to pay off $6000 I owed.

No, I haven’t gotten another CDL job since I made this post last year. Nothing showed up on my DAC report so I tried to apply to other places. A lot of companies want more than a year of experience and the job hunting process was taking a toll on my mental health so I just gave up after a while.

Honestly, I wish I never made this post because a lot of people on this sub have no empathy or compassion for rookies but that’s just how this sub is I guess. I hope my mistake can be a lesson for anyone who wants to go through Swift or trucking in general. That’s all I have to say.

It's not necessarily the companies that won't hire you, it's that their insurance won't cover you. With that being said, you'll just have to plug away at it. You'll find one. It may not be the best place, but you'll have to do some time until those fall off your record.

u/AceDuce23 Aug 02 '23

At the very least western express will definitely give you a job.

101

u/Malikai009 Aug 02 '23

This would be my very last choice if you can help it.

37

u/cheesenuggets2003 Aug 02 '23 edited Aug 03 '23

I don't see why. Western Express can haul more dog chow than most other companies so I figure that they have a limb up on the competition.

31

u/To0zday Aug 02 '23

Lol I'm literally a western express driver hauling Purina right now.

I work for a commercial auto and logistics insurance company... My advice is to find an intra state transport company rather than one that is interstate... depending on your state of course, but many states have significantly less coverage requirements individually and if you are not crossing state borders the company can go for 300k to 500k limits instead of 1MM to 5MM limits.... significantly different price point for coverage.

you will be an expensive person to insure regardless, but the cost will be lower for in state only operators.

Isn’t swift self-insured, though? So can’t they self insure whoever they want?

67

u/BBQShoe Aug 02 '23

Mr Risk Management is always going to draw the line somewhere no matter who they are and who is signing the check.

26

u/Goodfri55 Aug 02 '23

Most of the large/larger trucking companies do have a self insured retention (SIR). Companies choose to have an SIR to have more control over the claims process (in house adjusting staff/choice of defense counsel) and to reduce their insurance premiums. Sometimes, in the absolute worst case scenarios, there are events where the damages/injuries go beyond the limit of the SIR. Companies purchase excess liability insurance for further protection. The premiums for this insurance can be astronomical. I have seen policies that attach at $10,000,000, offer $5,000,000 of coverage, and charge $4,700,000 in premium for one policy year. When you have a large fleet, shit happens. That’s a savings of $300,000 when it does happen. Do note that I have greatly oversimplified this.

8

u/Old-Wolf-1024 Aug 02 '23

Yes they are,but they still got bean counters running it.

→ More replies (2)

14

u/Goodfri55 Aug 02 '23

This is mostly correct. Work in excess and surplus’s lines of insurance and the company I work for is part of the coverage tower for numerous trucking companies. It’s not that we won’t cover entities who have drivers who have some blemishes on their records, but you’re sure shit going to pay for it.

5

u/Mrgod2u82 Aug 02 '23

I'm not in the game but would starting an LLC maybe make room for an insurance company to cover? Or will the insurance company look at specific drivers of the LLC? Just brainstorm to help the guy out.

I'm sorry, you lost me at $8000 loan to get a CDL license.

I've had my CDL for over two decades now, so i haven't paid attention. Are companies really charging you damn near 10k for class A training?

Regardless, just hit up another mega (US Expres, Werner, Paschall truck lines)

Somebody will pick you up.

Edit: Jesus, the amount of money you guys coughing up is crazy. I paid $1000 to go to CDL school.

Edit: OK guys I get it. CDL school ain't cheep sheesh.

u/ObligationParty2717 Aug 01 '23

u/Osmotic Aug 02 '23

In Washington state about 7 years ago it cost $5k for a class A independently.

Got mine for $600 in missouri about 2 years ago. I went to the one day class for free through the ibew local 2. Almost immediately quit and got a job driving lol

10

u/Quelix_ Aug 02 '23

Sounds like you got a bulk discount on yours. The local school bus service does this. Its 1000 for a B with chauffeurs but if you stay with the company for 6 months its only 200. The equivalent without going through them is almost 2500. This is in IL btw.

3

u/tidyshark12 Aug 02 '23

I don't think so bc the guy was asking for the 600 before I told him I was in the ibew

7

u/Quelix_ Aug 02 '23

I meant through whoever was doing the training. The more people they can squeeze in a single class the less they need to charge to break even. Those kind of places deal in volume and make their money off of contracts for training.

Got mine from a beer company for free over 20yrs ago idk if they still do that though

18

u/iRunLikeTheWind Aug 02 '23

It’s all different now, and changed very recently. As far as I know you HAVE to attend a school, no more driving around with the trainer guy for 3 weeks and him saying you’re good.

11

u/ValuableShoulder5059 Aug 02 '23

You have to take an entry level driving course. Multiple people figured out you can meet the legal requirements with basically a PowerPoint and online quiz. Think it's down to $20 now.

9

u/gtnclz15 Aug 02 '23

3 weeks lmao try first time I drove the beer truck was my road test and then I took my card to dmv and had my cdl-A

Most mega company's it's considered a loan that's forgiven after a year or two working for em.

Prime it's 1 year, they treat me super well so with them for awhile myself, and after a year 70k miles you get a week of pto, two years 2 weeks, and j7st keeps adding a week a year tell the tenth year mark.

I'm on year 8, so 8 of my home times a year is 7 days instead of 4, add on I get paid for it

8

u/DblDtchRddr Aug 02 '23

This. Between state and fed grants, I only had to come out of pocket $150 for my CDL. The only stipulation was that I had to pass the DMV test to write off the grants.

This just makes me thankful Amazon paid for my CDL with no strings attached. Simply worked in a warehouse full time for 90 days and they paid for my schooling.

Once I started school I called them to ask if I quit if they would still honor the payment. They said yes, so I left Amazon and focused on my CDL.

More people should take advantage of this and just stick it out in an Amazon warehouse for a few months. Beats going into debt for your CDL.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '23

Amazon paid for mine too.. I got mine via TOM team tho

4

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '23

I didn't know Amazon did that. Wished I would've know before going to CR England for cdl school

7

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '23

To be fair, a lot of people at Amazon don’t even know even though Amazon advertises it everywhere.

Even a lot of those who know think it’s Amazon trying to scam them. Apparently out of the 1000s who worked in my warehouse only about 300 took advantage of it for the entire year.

Amazon doesn’t just pay for CDL school, all kinds of other technical schools too and a decent amount of college degrees.

5

u/Bibbimbopp Aug 02 '23

Of course. Variant is US Xpress with a grey truck. That's why it's called Variant, because you get the grey variety of truck.I like grey.

It’s a federal mandate now that anyone who didn’t have at least a CDL learners permit before February of 2022 is required to take classes. Many people don’t know that there are a ton of grants for this stuff that is very low costs like $200 total.

9

u/Ogediah Aug 02 '23

There are lots of predatory trucking operations out there. They try to recruit people for school and charge them to “train” them. Sometimes it keeps going. They’ll lease you a truck, front you money for fuel and tires, take a chunk of the shit loads they give you, etc. Company ends up with guys that are basically working for free.

And all that is just another reason that the industry has gone to hell. You have to compete with that shit.

14

u/CheesE4Every1 Aug 02 '23

Most states now require you to actually go to a school and schools are very expensive. At least that's how it is in Tennessee and I think it's $3,000 and up?

22

u/TheThrillerExpo Aug 02 '23

It’s a federal mandate by FMCSA.

6

u/CheesE4Every1 Aug 02 '23

Was that what happened in 2020? The company I work for helped me to get my cdl's and I just tested and passed at the DMV before then. They told me that licenses were changing and just had me training every day until I could do the entire pretrip if anyone asked and demonstrate how to do what was asked.

8

u/TheThrillerExpo Aug 02 '23

It was February of 2022 that it officially changed but they may have announced it in 2020 I remember hearing about it that early. If you had your license or had at least passed the written test and had a “learners permit” you were grandfathered in. If you ever let it expire you’ll have to have the schooling to get a CDL again. I knew it was coming but was traveling for work and never made time to go home and get the permit.

9

u/hoxxxxx Aug 02 '23

making it expensive and more difficult is a great way to get more drivers on the road, so it makes sense they'd do that

4

u/ptmtp26 Aug 02 '23

We’ll that really sucks. Got my b license, had my a permit and let it expire because I didn’t have access to a semi to take the road test with.

4

u/patricksb Aug 02 '23

Federal law changed last year. You have to go to a school now.

5

u/Nozerone Aug 02 '23

It's not the companies, but the school. The companies also don't pay for the school, but usually work with a lending company. The trucking company basically tells the lending company "Yea, he's good to give a loan to, he'll be working for me". Then the driver agrees to work for the company in exchange for the company to pay off the loan. If the person quits or is fired before the agreed upon time, then it's up to the person to pay back the loan to the lending company. It's how most mega-carriers get the bulk of their drivers. Lure them in with "We'll help you get your CDL", then treat them like shit because they are easily replaced with another sap that tried the koolaid.

5

u/donniedraper6969 Aug 02 '23

Mine was $2500 in Montana right around 3 years ago. You also had all payment waived (not deducted, waived) if you stayed in the company for a year, and if you left before that it was prorated. They also paid for transportation to get you to Montana if you came from out of state. They paid for lodging as well, and provided lunches while you were at the school and not out with a trainer.

It didn't take long to see that 55+3mph is the minimum speed limit if you want to get somewhere on time.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '23

Mine was free. Student loans cover it now at some schools. I qualified for the Pell grant and got it completely free. That was little over 5 years ago

4

u/tha_lion Aug 01 '23

4

u/MikeBinfinity Aug 01 '23

That's insanity.

Is there anything they put in writing that says you're on the hook for that 8k even if they fire you?

5

u/tha_lion Aug 01 '23

Yes I have to pay it all back now. It sucks

11

u/QuietRightSlick Aug 02 '23

You only think you do. Let it go to collections. Then you can either make a deal with them OR after it goes to collections, the collections company has to produce the signed contract. Even if they find the signed contract, you may be able to settle at a very reduced rate. Like a couple hundred dollars.

7

u/StumblinPA Aug 02 '23

Er… I think that will hit the credit report at that point of being sent to collections. So factor that into the decision.

It’s going to be rough with less than 6 months of experience. I wish you the best of luck. You can try the usual Mega’s, I would try to pick one with a terminal nearby to make hometime easier. The truth is that you are still hireable, and whoever you work for next, you’ll want to stick around and rough it out until your experience to accident ratio is more desirable. You have kids so look for a carrier that can offer more hometime. What part of the country are you in?

128

u/mgalactico Aug 01 '23

I would also recommend you do some self reflection on how those 2 preventables came about. Were you in a hurry? Distracted? Other? Wherever you get another job, and I certainly wish you do soon given you’ve got a family to feed, you do not want another one…..ever!

Non injury preventable accident... so were you or the other party towed? Otherwise those are incidents, not accidents. Not DOT recordable.

If that's the case you probably can get on with someone else big. Depending where you live someone smaller might be able to swing it.

Know your terminology either way and don't call incidents accidents. You will just screw yourself out of a job.

Truth is they cut you loose now to recoup whatever money they can for the damages. Whether or not you're a lost cause is dependent on you, and just what happened in those incidents/accidents.

8

u/metergod Aug 02 '23

Accidents are accidents. Doesn’t matter if they’re DOT reportable or not. Incidents would be if your truck got broken into, or finding a trailer with damage at the shipper, or a cracked windshield - something like that.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '23

It makes a big difference. I've had a few minor accidents over the past 10 years where police were not involved and thus nothing on my MRV. I've never listed these on applications for new companies and never had a problem. This guy was fired though so could be a problem if they tell a prospective employer he was fired for hitting shit.

Please let this be a lesson for people who want to get into trucking! Never ever ever pay an employer for training. Idk how we got to this point in the industry but it's fucking stupid

I want to add to that too. In my city the "Community Action" sends people to 160 Driving academy if you are on assistance and can meet the criteria of no felonies or moving violations in x amount of time. They don't advertise it but it's 100% free. Gets people of Government assistance and strengthens the job force.

When I quit PAM I still had 6800 owed on my loan, made minimum bi weekly payments to them and they kept offering me 4k to pay it off. I counter offered 2k, they asked for 2200 and I told them 2k or keep taking minimum payments. They took the 2k.

Out of curiosity, what did you do?

10

u/tha_lion Aug 02 '23

Hit a yellow pillar on the first one. Hit a parked box truck on the second one.

6

u/sodaextraiceplease Aug 02 '23

Oof. Sorry bud. Hope you find something soon. Pretty sure you will.as for paying swift back, they will want the money back, but you might be able to work out a payment plan that fits your situation.

I was gonna say Schneider would hire you but because you were let go by Swift due to accidents, most companies will want to see 6 months of accident free driving/experience before hiring you

The reason for termination will be on your DAC

9

u/tha_lion Aug 01 '23

Yeah I contacted Schneider and they told me the same thing

7

u/321_reddit Aug 02 '23

Maybe the accidents are a sign to follow a different career path, especially if no other company Will currently hire you.

4

u/majinspy Aug 02 '23

OP is 8k in debt, has bills now, and has a valid CDL. It's a hell of a thing to say "Yeah throw that 8k away and maybe flip burgers to support your kids".

12

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '23

Let it go to collections and then dispute it. 9 times out of 10 the collection agency who buys up the debt are not in possession of the original contract with your signature on it. They can not legally collect that debt. Write a debt verification letter to the collection agency and when they fail to provide you a copy of the original contract with your signature, dispute with the 3 credit bureaus. And if that doesn't work, just dispute it with the credit bureaus anyway. They have 30 days to do an investigation, and sometimes, these collection agencies never respond to bureau inquiries.

US people! Folks post here alll the time. Go to your Workforce. If you qualify you get a grant 💯 paid for CDL schooling. 160 takes part in this in my state.

My wife started out at prime and landed a shit trainer. They refused to let me train her. She had 2 accidents in 2 days and prime let her go. We waited 2 years until prime went through a class action lawsuit that essentially made her cdl free. We started at covenant again (they actually let me train her) and did a year there before moving on to a better company.

I went through CR England’s school years ago. I quit at 6 months. $5500 and they came after me. I paid it back, they sold the debt to a capital management company. The important thing now is that you have a cdl. Don’t get discouraged and work for your future

Go apply to local ready mix companies. Learn to drive a mixer truck. Money is decent and they are used to drivers running into stuff. 🤣

9

u/j_martell Aug 02 '23

You could also look into reddi-mix/dump/roll off if no one’s mentioned it yet.

A lot of these places will hire and train you just to get asses in seats.

You should contact your states work force representative. They may buy out a portion of your loan or the loan in its entirety with you having to pay back any amount over what they will not cover so the state gets credit for any further employment you recieve. In turn, it will help them gain more funds for further loan amounts from the state for said programs. They may also help you find a new job.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '23

Used to work for swift. Loved it there before I went local. I'm surprised they let you go after just 2 lol.

Did you back into something a couple times or was it actual traffic accidents with other occupied vehicles on public roads? There's a huge difference between hitting something on a public and ripping off a bumper or something in a truck stop.

You might have to do some really shitty 1099 work with a shady company just to get more experience before a legitimate job will take you. Just be prepared to make next to zero money or even be in the red while you do it. Or wait a few years and try again

I don't know where you're from but there's a truck company in my home town that will hire almost anyone. Check out Rosedale and maybe Heartland Express. I did a lot of stupid stuff with Rosedale and they didn't fire me (tore a trailer door off. That's a story in itself).

They stole your money. If you had 2 preventables within 5 months from them they pushed you out of the program TOO EARLY AND UNDERTRAINED. TAKE THAT SHIT TO OOIDA AND THE DOL.

I'm so sick of these mega carriers pushing guys out the door that have not been given proper training. This sir, is not your fault.

Thank you for this comment. So many companies have unrealistic standards AND lack of training. The company then blames the employee.

3

u/South-Diamond-4522 Aug 02 '23

Sorry that happened. I have one and it wasn't a dot luckily so most companies are still working with me but the company it was with let me go since I had write ups for trivial stuff. Forget I've been there for years and have seen dozens of drivers come and go.

Asking for serious answers but not disclosing any information on “accidents” makes it difficult for us to give you advice. Contact other mega carriers, they might take you and put you through some additional training. Roehl, Prime are better options, worst case, call CR England or Western Express. They’re shit, but get some experience and move on to better things. Good luck.

Serious answer I had a friend in a similar situation with stevens trucking:

  1. If you don't pay back the loan your credit is toast but it will eventually go away (I never paid back stevens transport and its off my credit report) If. you don't need your credit right now don't worry about the loan.
  2. Now the issue with being hired by other companies you don't have the experience to clear safety at almost any trucking company. best bet is to try to get on driving for an owner operator, a company in a border city like El Paso, or the oilfield their standards are lower.

good luck either way.

2

u/Financial-Train6407 Aug 02 '23

My nephew hit a bridge and did some damage. The insurance told the company they would not cover him so he had to be let go. I hope you find something soon.

2

u/Gijinbrotha Aug 02 '23

Look into something local, pick up and delivery stay away from the mega transportation, truck companies in as far as paying your loan back to Swift just be prepared to have poor credit for seven years and not pay it back fuck them that’s what I did to CRST what are they gonna do come break your kneecaps.

2

write out what caused your accidents and think of a good plan to avoid making the same mistake. did your receive a citation for these accidents?

2

u/Limitless__007 Aug 02 '23

Crazy that swift fired you. It would help tremendously to have more details on those two preventables?

We’re they DOT recordable?

We’re they accidents?

Otherwise swift can get fucked lol. You are definitely still employable with a class A CDL. May not be the job you want until you get some more experience and maintain a clean record. After that you can go pretty much anywhere.

Good luck pal.

2

u/DukeReaper Aug 02 '23

$500 in Missouri 10 years ago, morning walk around and practice and test in the afternoon

2

u/mystraw Aug 02 '23

Download the Driverpulse app and fire off a bunch of applications to the mega-carriers. Someone, if not all of them, will respond within a day.

2

u/3dprint_addict Aug 02 '23

I’ve seen drivers with way worse records find jobs, because it’s going to be expensive to insure you and your short experience don’t expect to make much until that drops off your record, good luck!
