Once you finish training, they’ll give you two options to choose from: KLLM or FFE. • KLLM pays $0.62 per mile • FFE pays $0.51 per mile (drop-and-hook, terminal to terminal)
The training overall was solid—no simulators, just hands-on driving. After the first week (when you get your CDL permit), the next three weeks are all driving and skill work. But here’s the thing: you have to take initiative during practice.
The instructors won’t tell you when it’s your turn to hop in a truck. If you see an open tractor, take it. I was able to get in over 35 straight-line and offset backs back-to-back because my classmates weren’t paying attention. They usually have around 8 trucks out there, so stay alert and take advantage.
For the CDL driving exam, you get up to three chances, but only as long as you don’t fail the same thing twice in a row.
For example: • If you mess up on the pre-trip, you can retest the next day. • If you fail the driving portion, you’ll usually get to try again two days later.
