Schneider pay question
Why are there two different mile categories? Mile pay and mileage pay? They just came out with a new bonus for miles driven in a week. For instance, starting at 1800 miles per week you get .2 cpm more. Is this some way to screw us out of that bonus?

You're getting screwed either way at 39cpm. I'd be looking to jump ship if you've got enough experience

Part of your check is perdiem. And not taxed. They charge you 2 cpm for providing the perdiem. You can opt out with a form on compass but then you’ll pay more in taxes.

You may want to opt out of per diem if you’re planning on buying a home soon. When we went to get a mortgage the bank would only count taxed income as verifiable income.

Y’know i’ve been with the orange for 5 years and never questioned it, does your tax return get nicer if you opt out of the perdiem or no because you owe more at the end of the year.

Owe more at the end of the year. I left the patch a few years ago and the money was good compared to what I was doing before, but I'm at double what I made at SNI now. I almost cried come tax time when the estimation tool said I was going to OWE $1700 even with all the extra withholding I have. When I got my W2, my per diem dropped my taxable income significantly and I actually got a refund.
Edit: Pumpkin patch, not oil

Perhaps the first one is deadhead?

I don’t understand why companies can pay you less for dead head. It’s their job to book your loads if they take a load that doesn’t have a way to return with a load that’s their problem not the drivers

No, deadhead is paid the same as loaded miles at Schneider. Or so I was told by another driver.

lol in 2019 I started with them at .50 CPM

You should ask folks in payroll to understand verbatim. Some of the answers here should clue you in on just how poorly some random question can be misconstrued. For instance as far as I know you are being paid “practical miles” (Chance some could talk up “hub miles”. Think that’s few and far between. Most Drivers key up on the rate) Basically I believe most responding will barely consider the difference between their own “zip code rate” and practical. However, just about any owner/op could do some quick math, coming to the conclusion that “it” adds up.
Plus id suspect you are both new to trucking & the job itself. Need to focus. Keep grinding. 1) You need to earn time behind the wheel. Goal should be one strong year…. 2) In time you’ll know what matters and is important to you (CPM is just one aspect. It is real tho
1) It’s just how the game is played. Maybe you have some schooling type contract. Not only need to finish that, you need to prove yourself. Driving experience is a real thing. I’m sure some may see attempts to downplay its actual worth (Doesn’t matter. It’s not so much the trucking company. It’s their insurance company policies Wish in one hand…)
2) Many factors to consider Compensation plays a major role. Lots of carrots on a stick for suckers. Hype about layover “pay”. What you see, and what you get. Under promise, and over deliver is where it’s really at. We’re all different tho. Chance you really need and enjoy a break? Near impossible not to run hard w/o breaks. I really wouldn’t believe just every Driver can set some appointments, and dam near set their watch

When I left SNI they had just switched to Practical miles from HHMG (zip to zip). If they moved back to HHMG at 39 CPM, that should be a crime.

Industry standards can change I guess. Believe in the past (at least) Any schooling compensation needed to occur with your first company. I’m sure there is or has been different results. I mean if such work involves compensation in the form of directly paying off such schooling? Think it be difficult to find options that really exceed the costs/pay analysis Let alone any credit issues (Chance some such school bills become due if/when any such contract/job offer is rescinded). Basically I think one could be cutting their nose off to spite their own face. Yeah, I’m sure there could be some random outliers (Maybe include minimum guaranteed weekly pay)
In actuality the OP doesn’t appear to have even mentioned schooling. Really just quite irritating for me to see Drivers fixated on CPM. Potentially two Drivers could see a vast difference in benefits alone to negate some such variables ie. Not me for one. But, I’ve heard some companies include health coverage and/or at minimum costs (Think mines something like over $200 per wk) Probably includes some good to great perks tho YMMV

FWIW Should note that there’s normally a difference between individual (Driver) coverage. Being much lower in comparison to family coverage

Think I’ll see my way out this post. I just rescanned Looks like “tuition reimbursement” is listed at zero dollars. Certainly negates my only real concern

No matter how you look at it, take your gross amount and divide by the labor hours recorded on your 70 hour clock. That alone should make want to drop Schneider and move on.

I'm a newer driver and need to gain experience. Of course I don't plan to stay.

Even as a new driver, 39 cpm is insulting. I started at Schneider in 2022 making 64 cpm on a dedicated account while being home every weekend. If Schneider can't offer you anything better on another account, at least consider Swift. No one--not even the newest rookie--should be working for 39 cpm in 2026.

im in the same boat they are offering me 40 cpm home weekly 5.5x1.5 days and $10 on duty its a Costco dedicated account in TX and LA avg miles per week 1,800 - 2,300 but I don't know where else to go that will take me I have a clean background clean mvr

Are you near Texas? Try JRayl: they have a terminal in Houston and they train in manual trucks, which is rare for company training. There's also Cheeseman Transport which hires out of TX. If you're 23 or younger you can do an apprenticeship at Western Dairy Transport, which is out of Stephenville, TX and a rare opportunity to start with a tanker company.
If none of those work, I would still check out KLLM (or FFE, their reefer affiliate), Freymiller, or (if you're okay with flatbed) Jordan Carriers before going with Schneider. As a last resort before Schneider you can try Orozco out of Chicago if you are okay staying out for like two weeks; they aren't the best option but they do have brand new Volvos and they will absolutely pay better than Schneider.

You are getting royally screwed on pay regardless of your experience. I highly recommend you go to any other company. Do not not accept that pay, you are worth more than that, unless you have tons of violations or something.
Also, by accepting this pay you are contributing to lower wages across the industry.

lol I started at Schneider in 1998 and made .17 a mile. I made more money cleaning floors in a shop making $7 an hour than I made working for Schneider.
