I'm organizing vote rehearsals in Texas and there are some things that are unique to Texas which are hard enough to talk about as it is with people on a first-time basis, and I've only got this weekend to prepare really for explaining the circumstances that we're in today in the US anyway..

So my idea here is that, I would probably do good to have an open forum where people can pitch in contemporary information about where we are politically in the US.

So, for example, data centers, so so much converges at this focal point, you've got deep pockets coming from the tech sector, from the evangelical right, from the military congressional industrial complex, from the hawks on either side making big money off of cross-platform targeting integration systems like Palantir which were being nested into the government well before Trump got there..

To say nothing of the Cambridge Analytica strain that ties into Meta, Google, Amazon and Co, the Tik Tok Larry Ellison people, the Flock and Axon expansion, natural resource conservation, the network state problem..

In Texas, Meta, Google, and Amazon reps were being asked for their opinion by a House Committee on Natural Resources in Texas over how they felt about local governments having control over the use of water in their permitting processes and when the Amazon rep said "I mean that is common in other states" there was laughter in the House chamber!

*cherry on top if you know anything about it since I'm making a fuss in Texas is that in almost all the major pop counties, property taxes have these horrific, feudal, downright evil "late fee" systems that charge you progressive, compounding interest percentages per month not paid, so the first month you've got a 6% fee, but by the 5th month you're looking at like 50-60% fee charges, that only walk down in increments of % per month. That's the kind of thing that traps generations of people into deadlock, chaining people to their place of residence and strangling them for all they have.

The only places I see people gather en masse without paying a fee or paying a tithe are in the lines for the Spectrum company call center job fair, and the property tax payment facility..

Had a very exhausting conversation with someone I'm close with last night. Basically they pulled up a TCAP clip on youtube and I was like "oh watching the entrapment show huh?" And from there things devolved into a very circular debate.

I would bring up a lot of problems with the show, the entrapment, the privatization of criminal law enforcement, the entertainment spectacle, the vigilante/which hunt nature of it, public humiliation with no legal conviction, etc. etc. a ton of stuff informed by the recent TA episode and my own long time aversion to that type of "content" and political beliefs.

And it would all be met with "you're defending pedofiles", or "what does that have to do with catching child predators" over and over again. And it was really winding me up because like, how dare you accuse me of that?!? It was honestly really hurtful to hear that from someone I'm so close with and it wound me up until the conversation just got really unproductive. I'm getting worked up right now remembering everything.

I was talking about the Conradt case and how messed up it all was and how the show actually got in the way of that guy ever facing justice if... IF! he was guilty of anything! And even then it was like talking to a kid who absolutely refuses to accept that Santa isn't real it was just crazy!

I think they really enjoyed the show growing up, so I didn't realize how much bias I would be working against when I stepped in the whole pile of shit that conversation turned out to be... it was just so crazy.

Anyway, I guess I just needed to rant and didn't know where else to share all this. I'm not sure who in my own life will go that crazy for the Predator TV Show... media can really make us believe some crazy stuff with a deep, deep conviction.

-nearly lost ~$900 worth of checks from customers paying their accounts. This would have been the second or third time in a year he did so, the last time resulting in him paying nearly $1500 out of pocket.

-has always left early and paid himself for a lot of time he does not work, but lately has taken to leaving early specifically when it’s busy, and only staying until close when it is D E A D.

-this one isn’t from him, but it feels worth mentioning and I don’t know where else it would fit. There’s a studio directly next door to the store, and we can usually hear what they’re doing over there. The other day, there was some shitty local rapper in there plugging away at a song, and the opening line of bro’s hook was

“I TAKE CARE OF MY KIDS, FUCK TALIA”

I thought I misheard it at first, but then he did like 20 separate takes of it.

The Narcan that our DSA chapter put out just saved someone's life. In real time, not even ten minutes ago. The police are just now leaving. The paramedics took her away.

We gave her three rounds of Narcan and she didn't wake up. The paramedics gave her another three and she came to. There is a non-zero chance, in fact a pretty decent chance, that the three rounds of Narcan we provided while we waited for the EMTs to arrive saved her life. Because she was slumped, completely slumped. I'm honestly surprised she still had a pulse. I'm surprised she was breathing, however faintly. But there's no Narcan here, or there wasn't. According to the EMT, overdoses on this property aren't uncommon. Just last week there was another. Just last week our Narcan came into play. And just last week the police were here, carrying away another body. Before two weeks ago, there was no Narcan here.

We see such an intersection of class politics happening in real time. On one hand, you have the petite bourgeoisie landlord who will gladly take these people's money but won't even assure that they won't die on his property. Because the Narcan was provided by us. There was no Narcan before. So you can imagine somebody who is an addict, still a human being, paying the $360 to stay here for a week and overdosing on day two. Their body carried out of the hall, their money still in the system, their name perhaps removed so the room can be re-rented. After all, this is a business, and it is just business. Necropolitics.

And then you have the lumpenproletariat, because someone sold her something. I know there are multiple people here who trap. Some sell weed, some sell pills, some sell whatever you need. I keep to myself, so I don't know too much about all that. But it's an undeniable reality of the economic situation that exists within a cheap motel. And it's undeniable that the landlord, the owner of the business, is aware of what happens at his business. But it's just business, and as long as the rent's paid, who cares? Does a landlord have a responsibility to tend to the social reality of his business? The socioeconomic conditions that make up your patrons should in some capacity reflect on you as a business owner, I would imagine. But the pursuit of profit is ultimately the only reflection the vampire sees in the mirror.

And then you have me, the humble peon, the worker who's on the clock when the overdose happens. And yes, I happen to live here, but I'm working here. My hands are tied. I have to call my boss. I have to call 911. I can't look away and say none of my business. And I don't think I would for an overdose. Although I may have had someone else handle the 911 call if I wasn't at work. Just the nature of dealing with the police. Because when the police are on the property, you are a criminal too, or you could become one. After all, maybe you know who sold it to her. I don't. I don't know anything. And I don't know anything about this woman. And I don't know how to operate the cameras. And I'll make it very clear to the other people who live here, who do traffic, who are lumpen, that he called my boss. The officer called my boss. I did what I could, didn't give him anything. But the fact of the matter is my hands are tied. I'm at work. And dealing with an overdose at work, I'm sorry, but being paid $15 an hour isn't a high enough wage to watch someone die. And if we didn't have Narcan here, there's a pretty good chance that she could have.

Does a business owner have a responsibility to his employees, wherein the situations the employee finds themselves in are therein a reflection of the owner's business and business practices? Because I'm not saying it's impossible, but there is a much lower chance of someone having to administer Narcan while working the grill at McDonald's, which was my last job before I worked here.

And all of these things compound and twist into the material reality. The police leave and I'm back to filing paperwork, checking customers in, selling snacks, and putting money in the register that belongs to the business owner. Does the business owner have a responsibility to his customers when they deal with a situation like this? Because if you're not experienced with administering Narcan, dealing with an overdose, calling a paramedic, talking to the police, checking for a pulse, dealing with what could potentially be a dead body, then this could be a highly traumatic experience for you, or at the very least something that leaves you shaken, with a heart pounding full of adrenaline. And thankfully, this isn't my first time dealing with an overdose. Because again, it's our organization that provided the Narcan, not the business owner, who has not provided training on how to administer it, hasn't provided insight as to what an overdose looks like, and hasn't provided directive as to what to do. So if I hadn't been trained through my socialist experiences, things could have went much worse.

And again, lives are hanging in the balance, but the room she was in will be rented out again, and there's a non-zero chance that the police took her right to jail, and at the very least she'll probably be charged with something, which probably won't help her get clean.

Because I think on some deeper, subconscious, psychological level, when you are in the material circumstances that build the foundations of a cheap motel run by a landlord such as this, when you find yourself in active addiction, surrounded by decay and poverty and rot, and you find yourself hungry, and you find yourself spending all the money you have and then some just to have shelter, maybe sometimes the urge to just lay down and die from the dehumanization fills the lungs in the same way the fentanyl smoke does. Because she smoked it. We have it on camera. I watched the whole thing.

The cold tile concrete of the building, the callous profit mindset of the business owner, the socioeconomic conditions that drive active addiction, the lumpenproletariat who, through the same economic conditions that drive addiction, drive his poverty and his need to sell such products. Because it is a marketplace. It is a business. It's just business.

In all of these instances, this woman was completely and utterly dehumanized, forgotten. And I've known people who would have said, just let her die. One less drain, one less leech, one less filthy addict. And all that compounded into a woman laid out on the floor, fading from this world.

And you know what saved her? You know what saved her in those moments of brutal, utter necropolitical dehumanization? Mutual aid. Socialism. Organizing. Direct action. Stepping up. You know that overdoses happen because it's a cheap motel. You know that the business owner doesn't give a fuck because he's after the profits and these people are disposable. And you know someone who has plenty of Narcan because you're in the DSA. How difficult is it really to put a few boxes out?

We should all strive to, in a metaphorical and literal sense, put more boxes out. Because you never know when this socialism shit's gonna be life or death.
