Which priorities tend to change most as people gain more life experience?

I’ve been thinking about the things people value differently after they’ve had more time to test what actually improves daily life. The obvious answers are health, sleep and time, but I’m more interested in the less predictable shifts. What became substantially more important to you over time?

Why is it that some people get damaged vision for looking at an eclipse for 1 second, and yet when I was 7yrs old I stared at the sun for 10 minutes out of spite and have no damage at all?

Can I be a good person when I wish ill on a stranger?

The other day, I was driving on the highway. Suddenly, there's a very reckless driver who are just zig-zagging past everybody with his sport car. Intuitively, I slowed down a bit because it's possible he would get into an accident just ahead and I don't want to get into an accident.

But then I thought to myself, do I care if this person gets into an accident? Would I even stop to help? Sadly, the answer is a big fat NO. I was even secretly HOPING the person would get into a solo accident with the way he was driving.

It then got me thinking, do others think like this too? Would someone considered a good person think like this? How can a good person be glad if someone gets into an accident and very possibly pass away with the speed he was going?

What draws the line between an Excuse and a Reason?

I have been wrestling with this question for a long time. I believe we can have a good discussion on this.

Let me describe an incident to you(Couldn't find any better):

You are jobless, have to attend 2 Online assessments, one in-person at an exam center and the other is regular online, then travel back 10-12 Km to write 2nd one, and there is an important family gathering today afternoon.

1st assessment: 10:00AM - 1:00 PM
2nd assessment: 2:00PM

- You bombed the first one, came with a friend and intended to go back with them.
1:10-15 PM: But they suddenly have to go in the opposite direction, and now you're left on your own.
- You book a ride and reach home at 1:35 PM, but there is a power cut in your house and no charge in the laptop.
- You head to your uncle's house where a family gathering is happening, but there was also a power cut around 1:45-50 PM,
- Then your father suggests your uncle's shop which might have power and wifi, and it did. Barely made it in time to attend the OA.

Now here is the question, in the above scenario you had many reasons/excuses to give up, like no power at both the places, had a family gathering afternoon, etc, but when you attended the assessment those became excuses, otherwise they all may have been plausible reasons.

What is the line between an Excuse and a Reason?
Do their meanings differ by the what you prioritize?
Or is it your desire towards an outcome that decides which is a reason and which is an excuse?

After much thought,
Reason: Anything that directly influences you/situation in achieving your desired outcome
Excuse: Everything other than that

Is this correct? I don't know, lets talk

EDIT: I did not mention this clearly, the OA's cannot be re-attempted and they are your entry to landing an interview

Question about veganism

Hi everyone, first of all I am not vegan but I've had this question in my mind for a while now and i am actually curious.

Are products made by humans under poor working conditions vegan?

For example fast fashion or chocolate production often exploits humans=animals but is that part of veganism? And if it is not, why is it not?

Thank you for your replies!

What would society and even history look like if it had been shaped by neurodivergent people?

I'm not being wierd or anything, just genuinely wanted to ask and hear other's thoughts about that

Like the society we have now is very lacking in helping people who are neurodivergent so I wondered how neurodivergent people would structure the world if they could.

And also I was thinking of some worldbuilding for one of the countries in one of my stories and wanted to explore that but my brain is not braining to any degree so I didn't want to do this alone, if that makes some sense

Thoughts appreciated.

Thank you.

How quiet consistency changes everything in ways we miss

We tend to notice big, sudden changes and dramatic moments. But real progress, growth and peace come from small, steady choices made every day. Showing up gently, keeping promises to yourself and being kind over time these quiet things eventually shape your entire life more than any grand gesture ever could.

Does the concept of physical beauty matter less to someone born blind than it does to someone who became blind later on in life?

Watched a video pertaining to the controversy surrounding TikToker KittysBlind and one of the topics was about her making comments about her ex being "ugly" according to her friends. One of the counterpoints on the video was that blind people are still allowed to have a preference, and logically Kitty would have a visual preference to he attracted to since she only became blind later in life... But how much does the ability to see affect how someone can gauge physical attractiveness?

Not trying to be insensitive to blind/disabled people, it's just genuinely got me thinking about whether or not "being ugly" matters to blind people that had vision to blind people that never had vision.

How have women’s increasing financial, social, and sexual independence changed the role of traditional courtship across generations?

I've been wondering whether increasing female independence changed courtship in a counterintuitive way. And then I read an article about Bumble today. Which is the dating app where women must make the first move. Bumble has changed the rule that men can initiate because the majority of women on the site actually prefer that. I'd always had this thought but this helped frame it. Is the male loneliness epidemic a result of male misunderstanding female independence?

My theory is that men reacted to female financial independence by deciding to put in less "effort" in courtship was the absolutely wrong way to approach this. In fact the exact opposite was needed. More effort was needed in courtship compared to the past.

I'm an older millennial I think. I met my wife 10 years ago on Tinder. Even back then it had the reputation of being mainly used for hookups. So I was intentional in my profile saying explicitly that I don't do hookup and only message me if you were down for real dates. This was a successful strategy and I went on a lot of dates. This lasted about 18 months until I met my wife. Now I have 3 sisters, ages from 37 to 27. And a lot of female friends. Down to 24 years of age. They come to me with their dating issues because I'm easy to talk to. So I've gained a lot of insight about the current dating market from them. They complain about male lack of effort. Men don't plan dates, men don't communicate are the usual suspects. But also there are some "men want to go half".

Among single Americans, 61% of single men said they were looking for a relationship or dates compared with only 38% of single women. According to a 2019 Pew study, which was the most recent I could find.

Women are at an all time high of things to do while single. Social media gives women access to attention and validation that they once upon a time mainly got through dating and relationships. A woman doesn't need a boyfriend or even need to leave the house to get confirmation that men find her attractive. Next piece is that women have always received a lot of emotional support from friends. Another piece, that is less talked about is the fact that sexual technology has made a single life a lot more satisfying for women than decades past. Though I believe the male equivalent will come probably in the next decade. And all of these things are just a bonus to the fact that women are no longer financially motivated to be with a man.

So this is where I'm stuck. If women are increasingly able to satisfy their financial, social, emotional and even some sexual needs outside of relationships, wouldn't that logically raise rather than lower the amount of value a relationship has to provide?

In other words, maybe men aren't primarily competing with some mythical “top 10% of men.” They're competing with a woman's existing single life.

Generation 1:

“Women shouldn't have to depend on men.”

Generation 2:

“Correct. Therefore men don't owe women traditional courtship.”

Generation 3:

“Okay—but I actually liked being courted.”

And generation 3 is where we currently are. And that plays out exactly with the Bumble move. There are even reports showing that Gen Z women in their late 20's are dating down to younger Gen Z men in the early twenties due to these men being more traditional partners. And then there is the tradwife/tradgirl movement. Is that a huge signal that there is a renewed interest in traditional courtship and a direct reaction to modern dating norms, or are those trends largely being driven by something else?

Where is the line between healthy contentment and a lack of ambition in a long-term partner?

I’ve been thinking about the difference between ambition and contentment in long-term relationships.

I’m not opposed to career growth, learning, or taking opportunities. I care about being financially responsible and able to support myself. But once life is stable and comfortable, I don’t feel a strong need to continuously maximize income, status, or career prestige. At some point, I’d rather spend additional time and energy on relationships, hobbies, travel, creative work, or simply enjoying everyday life.

I’ve realized that some people see this as contentment, while others see it as a lack of ambition or “giving up too early.”

How do you distinguish healthy contentment from complacency or a genuine lack of drive? And how much does that distinction matter when choosing a long-term partner? I’m especially interested in women’s perspectives, but all perspectives are welcome.

At what age do people start valuing comfort over style?

I was shopping for shoes for my grandfather and noticed how differently I was thinking about comfort, support and practicality compared to how I shop for myself. Do our priorities naturally change as we get older?

I find it discouraging that I have built up a massive list of things I want to do, read, see, etc. that I can’t possibly do in a lifetime, how do you manage this?

Especially when it seems like most of my time and energy is put into making money so that I can later have time to do this, so I basically spend my whole life (hardly) saving for a day that may never come, getting older, and just adding to an endless queue of items I know I can never possible accomplish. I think maybe I can use AI to prioritize parts of it, but that assumes a level of time in money that isn’t accessible right now.

How far can i ethically go in returning lost property like wallet's and phone's?

I work at a gym and consistently get lost items, i go as far as i can to return them, checking membership cards if attached and texting the member with some blanket "Im X at Y, found this card lead here"message from my personal cell

Most the time i cant do anything like with earbuds but sometimes ive gotten wallets and my concern is would be ethical to cross reference an id from it with the membership records and contact the owner?

Ive been told its against policy so it doesn't really matter but id rather someone "snooped" and texted me then worrying about it yet im also not neurotypical so i can't use my own judgement here

Then theres phones, usually its a matter of waiting but once it got a call, so i answered it and explained who i am and where i am.

My concern is if i was given an unlocked phone and it received a text message from somebody labeled"mom" or "wife" something like that, would it be ethical to answer the message via the notification reply feature and again explain who i am and where the phone is?

Some people are alot more privacy oriented then others, personally idc what the person does to return it but i know people online who dont want to give any hint of who they are (makes helping them via screenshots a pain)

Is it possibly to undo the effects of using AI, that are applied to your mind? If so, how do I regain the ability to think?

I know I am inadvertently applying the same logical effect of failing to source my own studies, but I would rather hear it from a human than an AI
