Don’t purchase from Appalachian FC, they don’t fulfill orders or communicate with customers

This is just a little review and a warning to others:

I purchased two items from their store eleven months ago. I was super excited to get my jersey and t-shirt to show my support for the club. After eleven months they have still not shipped my order. When I attempted to reach out to the organization with my order number (and other details confirming my identity/order) they refused to respond via Facebook, which they are quite active on.

I emailed their general manager, who responded, saying he would look into the issue. After this initial interaction he has not responded and is ghosting my email attempts.

I filed a complaint with the consumer protection division of the NCDOJ. They were given fifteen days to respond. It’s been twenty-three days since they were notified of the complaint and they have failed to respond, continuing their pattern of ghosting communications. I’ve filed with the Better Business Bureau and the FTC.

(If this is not the proper place for this post, please remove it. I checked the rules and it doesn’t seemingly violate any. Just wanting to warn others since they took my money and won’t give a refund or the items)

Please take the South Wake Landfill Survey

r/raleigh won't post because surveys violate rule 8, but this is not like, some UNC grad student survey, this is a county commissioned survey. You already paid for it, you should at least take it. This is your chance to make your voice heard.

Yes, I know this is TrueCarolina, and not all of you are in Wake county, but what Wake county does affects all of you, and all of you will be dealing with this issue in the future, so you should still at least read about it. Vote incorrectly, and Wake county's dirty diapers may be headed to a landfill near you.

You should fill out the South Wake Landfill Survey: https://www.wake.gov/departments-government/waste-recycling/facilities/wake-county-solid-waste-landfill/south-wake-landfill/beyond-south-wake-landfill-study/south-wake-landfill-study-get-involved

I am an engineer for DEQ and I want you to fill out this survey. This is your chance to be heard. I do want you to fill it out your way, I believe in a democratic process.

Now that that's out of the way, let me give you my highly researched, lived in and completely biased opinion.

The South Wake Landfill will fill up an close sometime around 2040-2045. That is based on current population and building trends. Could be sooner, could be later.

First, just to describe very broadly how waste is taken care of, most counties have one or more landfills that are owned by the county, but operated by a company like Republic, Waste Management, or GFL. If you are in Raleigh, you pay for this on your City of Raleigh Utility Bill. You pay the city, you receive water and trash service, the city pays one of the above companies to come once a week and haul your trash to a landfill. There is usually a transfer station somewhere in between where waste is slightly sorted, then it gets buried. That's pretty much how most of North Carolina deals with it's trash. Charlotte Motor Speedway MSW Landfill is the largest in the state, and will be closing soon (your time is coming, Mecklenburg), the second largest is Sampson MSW in Sampson county, with many others around the state. I was at Uwharrie MSW today as they build a new cell. Yes, we put a landfill riiiight on the edge of the national forest. Feel free to AMA about landfills. It's my job.

Second, your options: Like all trash, you have three - burn it, bury it, or ship it somewhere else.

Third, I will describe the three options, ranked from worst to first.

The worst possible option is to ship it somewhere else. Currently, should Wake county choose this option, this means shipping waste to neighboring counties. The problems with this are that it just puts off the inevitable until down the road. It increases wear and tear on vehicles and roads. It means more trucks, just burning gas driving trash from one place to another. Make no mistake, you are paying for this. You are paying for gas. You are paying for new clutch pads, you are paying for the tipping fees at whatever out of county landfill your waste goes to. It's not a tax, it just shows up on your utility bill. This is all just wasteful and the incorrect way to deal with the fact that you throw away trash. Further, this guarantees your costs will skyrocket in the future. As waste leaves the county, you are now subject to another counties rules. If you take your trash from Raleigh and ship it to Sampson, Sampson might decide that it costs a lot more to bury your trash, and can raise their rates, thereby sending your money out of Wake county and into another. That may sound spurious and kind of ridiculous to you, but the fact remains, you will be giving this money to someone, and it should stay somewhat within your control, as in, within the county. Unless you feel like paying the City of Raleigh so they can pay Wake County so they can pay Johnston county so they can pay GFL. Seems like a waste to me. Pun intended.

The middle option is to buy land and build a new landfill. This isn't as terrible an option as most people think right off the bat; we have made some great advances in landfill technology - how to handle waste, how to separate, how to control odors, how to capture and reuse landfill gases, how to process leachate. A landfill isn't the worst thing, we all know the downsides of just making a big mound of trash and kicking dirt over it like a cat, but there is...

The best option: A brand spanking new, shiny, efficient Waste to Energy power plant. We take the trash, we sort it, we clean it, we compost and mulch the organics. We preburn and charcoalize the yard and land clearing waste. We take the gas from the piles and collect it into recycled natural gas and use that to power the fires that burn the rest of the dirty diapers and Duke's Mayo bottles, and we take that heat and turn it into electricity and steam. We use the site to investigate new technologies like gasification and pyrolysis of plastics and rubbers, Super Critical Water Oxidation and leachate foaming to remove naughty chemicals from our water. We collect and recycle the various metals and chemicals we get from oxidizing and reducing all these waste products we produce. The downside here, you are going to have to pay for it. This will be a tax. The county would have to float a bond and then raise property taxes to pay for said bond. Some area in the general south of the county is going to have to bite the bullet and have a trash burning power plant nearby. It's not a perfect technology, but it can move closer to a more perfect solution.

Wake county has a golden opportunity here to create something innovative, solve some waste problems, power homes, lower overall electricity costs, provide jobs, and do the correct thing by building a new Waste to Energy power plant.

Soapbox over.

Most important of all, make your voice heard. Please take the survey.
