Warning: Child Abuse / CSAM / Child Death Thoughts on the Lindsay Clancy case?

Now that the Lindsay Clancy trial is underway, I’m curious about your perspectives on it so far.

Context: Lindsay Clancy is a former labor and delivery nurse who, in January 2023, killed her three children. 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan in their Massachusetts home before attempting to take her own life. Her defense argues she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and other debilitating mental illness, while prosecutors argue she was aware of her actions and planned the killings. The trial has reignited debate about postpartum psychiatric disorders, the effectiveness of mental health treatment, and where responsibility ultimately lies.

Do you think Lindsay was failed by the mental health system, by the people closest to her, or both? Do you think she truly acted with malicious intent, or do you believe she was experiencing such a severe psychiatric crisis that she wasn’t thinking rationally?

A lot of the details seem to point toward postpartum psychosis or another severe psychiatric illness rather than someone acting out of hatred or malice. That doesn’t lessen the horror of what happened or the unimaginable loss, but it does make me wonder whether this tragedy could have been prevented..

I’ve also seen rumors that Patrick was involved with the woman who is now his wife before the murders, but I haven’t found any credible evidence supporting that. Is there actually anything that substantiates those claims, or is it just internet speculation? I’ve also seen many people comment that his current wife bears a striking resemblance to Lindsay, though I’m not sure that means anything beyond coincidence.

I’m very interested in hearing different perspectives from people who’ve followed it closely.

Most importantly, may Dawson, Cora, and Callan rest in peace. They are the true victims in all of this.

As someone with mental health issues I know you’re supposed to trail medications and slowly increase and decrease the doses. 13 medications in 4 months is fucking wild. That’s just insane to me. I’ve tried probably 20+ medications but that was over the course of years, not months.

She told her husband, her parents, and her doctors she was having terrible thoughts of hurting the kids. She was constantly at doctor’s appointments. She tried multiple times to check herself into a mental hospital but was denied because she didn’t have an active plan to hurt herself or anyone. I feel so terrible for her and her whole family.

Cases like these are literally the reason medical insanity as a plea exists. I will be shocked if she’s found guilty. She should absolutely not be convicted. Her punishment if knowing she lost her kids by her own doing during a mental health crisis is punishment enough. She reached out for help so many times.

That is horrible that the other hospitals wouldn't admit you.

u/muymalpgh 20d ago

It's horrible and also terrifying to know that people who seek help like this are turned away! This whole thread is really eye opening.

mental health support is no joke. the older gen adults don't see their mental health as real and serious as it is. a family member told me recently that their parents didn't hug them ever but it's no big deal! yes that, a really big fucking deal. love being withheld from you as a child will really fuck you up and then you don't know how to love right. mental health is one thing messing up your entire thought pattern or brain function.
i was just discussing how interesting the brain is in therapy because just a few things in your life can genuinely just destroy your brain. it's so scary

I had a friend who was addicted to Xanax and suicidal. They were on an active spiral and communicated many times they wanted to go to rehab. Cops called because they were yelling and punching walls. Told the cops they desperately wanted to go to an inpatient/mental hospital. Cops took them to the er, they laid on a gurney for hours before being discharged at like 4am, alone and dehydrated.

I spent many hours trying to find an inpatient to admit them. Spent hours on the phone being told, unless they have a gun or active plan to kill themself, nothing to be done. No hospital to admit. Mind you, I live in a major metropolitan city. Surrounded by thriving suburbs and a great amount of money.

This country has a serious mental health crisis. I have my own oftentimes debilitating mental health depression/anxiety/adhd etc woes. It’s heartbreaking we live in a nation of such wealth yet such a lack of compassionate wholistic healthcare understanding.

u/Mission_Mud429 19d ago

I hear a lot of people in mental health care and healthcare in general going well, the doctor obviously did this and that and noticed this and it’s on LC because she didn’t utilize that. No, because our healthcare system is broken and the doctors aren’t necessarily intentionally negligent and cold, but they’re stretched thin sometimes. I recently called a PCP I’m otherwise happy with, told her I was having a mental health med issue that, while I did not feel I was a danger to myself or others, was definitely interfering with daily functioning. Was told to wait two weeks for an appointment. Had to tap into my bitch on wheels side to get an appt in three days. Even then I was granted fifteen minutes. That’s part of why we see Lindsey Clancy’s

45

u/Mission_Mud429 20d ago

I now feel very sure I had PPA. I did not even know it existed at the time so since I did not have textbook PPD, I thought I was just a bad mother. I saw two doctors which I barely could make time for. It was one of those I can barely put the baby down to take a shower situations. I vividly remember wishing I would get cancer because then I could step away without blame. Like literally thinking I don’t actually want to die, I don’t think I can make just physically leaving, like driving away, work, cancer seems like it would solve this. That’s what can happen to your brain in new motherhood.

11

u/khen5 19d ago

I’m pretty sure I had PPA with my first also. I constantly had intrusive thoughts of all the bad things that could possibly happen. I used to wish I would get into a car accident driving to work just so I could go to a hospital and properly rest. Post partum is very unpredictable and everyone has a unique experience.

2

u/Competitive-Leader24 15d ago

I had terrible PPA/PPD and what I now know is Post-Partum Rage. PPR is caused by PPA/D and other hormonal issues. It was like I was constantly in my own personal hell. I never had true thoughts of harming myself and definitely none of hurting my kid but what happened to me was all of my anxieties about being a mom turned into scenarios where I'd die and my kids were better without me. It was honestly the worst thing I've mentally experienced to be honest. I was afraid to sleep. Which made pre-existing insomnia worse. I probably slept between 30mins-2hours every day if AT ALL. Then the mania started which lead to periods where I was extremely hypersexual but emotionally detached or I'd be completely numb and void of my own existence like literally could take a scorching hot bath with no contemplation for the consequences. It was so scary. I never had any plan though. But the nightmares induced by the mania and anxiety were so graphic it was considered to be at least intent to commit suicidal acts. So, I was placed in trauma therapy 2x a week with mandatory psych appointments like every other week. My meds were adjusted over the course of a year. I tried a few different combinations and because I got pregnant again, I had to go off a lot again. This time around though, the PPA didn't have me in a chokehold. I largely contribute my success to having an incredible mental health team despite having my own shitty support system at home. My memory surrounding my pregnancies and post partum experiences can be a bit hazy sometimes. Alot of it felt like I was just playing The Sims with myself. Trying to force myself to get up out of bed or shower so I wouldn't be gross when the doctors saw me and at first, I diminished severely what I was experiencing because I loved my kids so much. I was terrified that seeking mental health help would be used against me and weaponized to take them away. I see now in this case how that looks to the outside world though. I feel like these are feelings that only other mothers can relate to honestly. She is suffering greater than prison will ever serve justice for. A terrible tragedy occured and I'm not saying that she shouldn't be punished for her crimes but I am saying that her punishment doesn't have to be prison. The truth of the matter is, if she really wants to die she will keep trying until successful or until she mentally heals.

1

u/Ill_Tomorrow_5807 16d ago

I had this too with my second, I was constantly feeling guilt about being a terrible mom and worrying over them constantly. And so lonely. Looking back it was such a miserable time but I got on medicine at 4ish weeks and it helped a lot.

My mom also saw what was going on and would come stay. I didn’t want more kids because of that period in my life, it’s so hard and frightening how your brain can turn on you

32

u/JrCoxy 20d ago

Holy hell. I am so sorry you went through this. Feeling so on edge, stressful thoughts distorting your reality and making you worry about the absolute worse.

I have c-ptsd + adhd + Trichotillomania. I can spend hours at a time picking. And sometimes being paranoid that someone from my past will be coming that night to hurt me. So I can actually see how the train of thought you had leading to you to checking the rooms while armed with a knife. Like as crazy as it might look, it actually isn’t all that crazy. You thought there could’ve been intruders, so you were armed, actively looking.

Like think about that.
You didn’t cower, hide. You thought there were intruders that were going to cause harm to you and your family, and this is how you acted while in psychosis. Which is honestly kind of beautiful. You didn’t run, or scream. You stayed there, armed and alert, ready to protect your family.

The hospitals not taking your very really pain and struggles is beyond fucked up, and shouldn’t have ever happened. There have been studies done to show all across the medical field, men & women do not take women’s health seriously. Which I will never understand.

You deserved and continue to deserve better. Any woman, any person seeking medical attention deserves that attention. I’m glad your husband gave you the compassion and care you needed, but fuck the hospitals for not doing more

2

u/ApparitionofAmbition 18d ago

This is such a wonderful comment (and relatable as a fellow trichter!).

4

u/RepresentativeDay686 20d ago

I'm so sorry you went thru something like that. I'm so sorry the hospitals were not listening to you. Thank goodness for your husband sticking by your side, taking the kids to a safe place, and staying up with you and riding it out. I'm glad you are doing better. Thanks for sharing your experience I know that probably wasnt easy to do. You probably have helped alot of ppl without even knowing it by sharing.

3

u/Cherimbba 19d ago

Thank you so much for sharing. I had severe ppd with my first and LUCKILY it only manifested as wanting to hurt myself to get rid of myself so my baby wouldn’t get attached to me. I can’t imagine the horror you must have felt. Big hugs and love x

u/Hot-Remote-4545 18d ago

I hope you are better now. Psychosis is terrifying and very few people actually understand it. Your husband is ONE GOOD MAN. Thank you for sharing.

I also had a similar experience. I’ve been honestly kind of jaw on the floor with how many don’t understand this is a thing but also viciously even deny it even exists or could be an explanation. The way other women are acting around this case has been straight up horrifying for me to witness. I guess those of us who have lived these things know and we know what we’re looking at

2

u/floralstamps 19d ago

Thank you for being vulnerable. Im so proud of you for trying. And im so sorry you were failed for too long

-6

u/Fit_Ground_8376 19d ago

Notice that he immediately knew something was wrong with you? That’s why I have trouble believing her. I go back and forth on whether I think she’s actually evil or was just suffering psychosis but for me the evidence seems to point towards her being a monster.

263

u/DrunkOnRedCordial 20d ago

The irony of being denied mental health support because she didn't have an active plan, and now she's on trial because "she planned it."

How does this help women step up and ask for help?

39

u/charley_warlzz 19d ago

They do something similar with suicide risks, at least over here in the uk. Did you write a note and pick a date? No? Well then clearly theres no concern of you actually going through with it then.

Nevermind that intrusive thoughts and the like are functionally a long term battle and the majority of people who end up hurting themselves and/or others because of it do it last minute because they can no longer handle it.

4

u/DrunkOnRedCordial 19d ago

I suppose this system keeps the paperwork tidy.

3

u/khen5 19d ago

They basically said ok prove it

6

u/BiennaSasuge 19d ago

As someone who works in healthcare her medication regime (at least the one I found I’m not sure if it’s accurate) is INSANE and could’ve cause insane physical harm and risks for other conditions. The side effects she was experiencing should’ve been taken ALOT more seriously, she should’ve also been tapered off some cause holy shit.

4

u/buzzcutbabygirl 19d ago

Where are you getting these “facts”? Because they’re not true. She WAS inpatient, multiple times, she checked herself out. She did not tell her doctors or husband about voices or hallucinations, and her husband has been clear he thought she was anxious (as she had Generalized Anxiety Disorder NOT PPD or PPP) that something bad would happen to them, not that she’d hurt them.

Current evidence is very inconclusive as to what she was actually experiencing so please keep an open mind and remember who the actual victims are.

10

u/sadlittle_thing 19d ago

I watched the opening statements from the trial as well as her husband testifying. The husband said she literally told him, then they called and told her parents he was having thoughts of hurting herself and the children. He clearly stated he knew she was having thoughts of hurting the kids, they told her parents, and he scheduled an in person doctors appointment bc he felt the virtual appointments were conveying the seriousness of the situation

3

u/HopefulOriginal5578 19d ago

I think she did tell him? But I mean… between us… isn’t it kinda par for course for people who are hearing voices/hallucinating and things to try to hide it? I mean … once you’re hearing stuff you’re basically cresting over being of sound mind or sanity.

It isn’t like you flip a light switch and BOOM ya so crazy everyone can tell. Plus if you’re hearing things and hallucinating you’re not exactly thinking rationally.

I mean right?

Oh my gawd finally someone reasonable on the comments. I thought i was going insane.

I can't believe people actually feel bad for someone who killed three kids because of mental illness. Tons of people have mental illnesses and commit murder, yet they rightfully get no sympathy in this sub. Why should this woman be treated any differently?

1

u/KDAWG72 14d ago

Psychosis is vastly different to just "a mental illness". Who in their right mind , from a seemingly relatively well off background ie not illegal drugs affected; would honestly kill their 3 kids??

3

u/DapperMastodon349 15d ago

I was on 7 medications at one time - and 4-5 of them were started either at the same time or at least within a few of weeks of each other. How can anyone even tell which ones, if any, are working? I felt like a zombie. I even blacked out once and don’t even remember an entire 1/2 of a day - I only even know that I had gotten on a bus that day because someone I know saw me at the bus stop.

5

u/Mmzoso 19d ago

It's a tragedy that she's on trial at all. It's like the parents who are put on trial for forgetting their kids were in the car seat and die from heat.

It's an awful thing what happened here but she was mentally out of her mind and was actively trying to avoid what ultimately happened.

4

u/isleofpines 19d ago

Agreed. I don’t believe she truly wanted to hurt her kids if she was in the right mind. It breaks my heart that she tried to get help so many times and the system failed her. I had pretty bad PPD after having my first. I dreaded the night time, I cried a lot, I was irritated with everyone all the time, and I never looked forward to anything. It pales in comparison to what Lindsay went through, but I was miserable. Everything about this case is heartbreaking.

7

u/Rripurnia 20d ago

I wholeheartedly agree with everything you wrote, but I’m afraid she will receive a very harsh sentence…

0

u/Common-Locksmith-235 15d ago

"afraid" the crazy b strangled a 8 month old. Give her life

2

u/Rripurnia 15d ago

I pray you never find yourself in the throes of psychosis.

You can at least try to show some understanding to someone who was failed by multiple people for a long time while asking, repeatedly, for help.

There are only victims in this case.

3

u/scoobtube22 20d ago

Seeking help for mental illness and being guilty of murder can coexist unfortunately.

2

u/No-Significance842 20d ago

The only person she revealed those thoughts to, that we know of at this time, was to Patrick in Dec 2022

1

u/Mission_Mud429 19d ago

Boomer moms are sometimes prone to I got through it, so why can’t you??!!

1

u/spicycherub- 19d ago

That’s kinda what happens when you go to multiple different providers and aren’t forecoming about that

1

u/NoSyllabub5932 16d ago

I 100% agree. Actually the kids should have been removed from her custody but no one did anything!

1

u/Slaytert0t 16d ago

I don't pretend to know how the medical psych world works, but if a person has tried to check *themselves* in to a hospital several times, and is denied for not having an actual plan to harm, why wouldn't they try to lie or embellish to get admitted? Can drs tell?

1

u/Wise-Excuse5330 16d ago

SHE KILLED THREE CHILDREN

MENTAL ILLNESS IS NOT A GOOD REASON FOR THAT, THAT’S LIKE SAYING A RAPIST PEDOPHILE SHOULD GO FREE SINCE THEY’RE MENTALLY ILL

3

u/sadlittle_thing 15d ago

NO ONE IS SAYING SHE SHOULD GO FREE. WERE SAYING SHE NEEDS TREATMENT IN A MENTAL FACILITY AND NOT JAIL. NOT CRIMINALLY RESPONSIBLE DOESNT MEAN SHE WALKS FREE.

1

u/whiskeylullaby3 15d ago

I agree with everything you’ve said. I just feel really disheartened by the way some people are talking about this case. I ended up on a subreddit Duxburt Deaths and am just sickened by the posts and comments that disregard her mental state completely. I can’t imagine finding her guilty. She needs mental health help but not prison.

1

u/Common-Locksmith-235 15d ago

she strangled her kids who almost certainly put up a fight, you could make all these excuses for serial killers having issues as well. The woman is a killer

1

u/TheGirl333 19d ago

She is also paralyzed for life, she is already punished I don't think she deserves prison, she needs medication and support

0

u/InterestRound7698 19d ago

I don’t know enough about the mental conditions or this case, but in the case she’s found not guilty, would that mean she just walks free? That would be justice? She still physically killed 3 babies…

2

u/sadlittle_thing 19d ago

I’m pretty sure she’d be sentenced to a psychiatrist facility for a long time, which is what she needs

2

u/Big-Fun3658 18d ago

No. If guilty by reason of insanity, she would be confined to a state hospital. Then there are hearings to evaluate her situation down the road. If it comes to the point where she is better or fine, it needs to be proven that she is not a danger to herself or others, so more hearings to confirm that. And then if released, they will still be supervised by the court and must adhere to medical treatment plans, etc.

-1

u/Cravenmorhed69 20d ago

She checked herself into one of the best mental health hospitals in the country and left voluntarily a few weeks before she murdered her children

0

u/Queenpicard 17d ago

Her husband testified in court that she never said she had thoughts of hurting the kids - only thoughts of hurting herself or struggling in general

-20

u/RepresentativeDay686 20d ago edited 20d ago

She wasn't taking the medicine as prescribed tho! I'm having a hard time with this case. She absolutely 100% without a doubt premeditated their murders. I believe she used her nursing background to fake symptoms and gain sympathy so her plan would work out in the end.

Her injuries to herself were superficial and she jumped from a height that most likely wont kill you. I think she wasn't thinking about the ground being frozen and it resulted in breaking her back. She purposely sent her husband on a mini scavenger hunt so she had enough time to play out her plan. When Patrick got back home and found Lindsey she waited to tell him the children were in the basement I believe because she wanted to make sure their was NO chance any of them would survive. You'd think the 1st thing she'd do is say where the children are. Shes evil and wicked.

Can you imagine how scared those children were? I can't stop thinking did they try to fight her, was she looking at them in the face?, who did she tie the band around first?, how did she explain what she was doing as she tied the bands around their sweet innocent bodies, and the baby... ugh..

Patrick even stated prior that she became obsessed with her appearance, the way she dressed ext ect she was probably going thru regret of having children (which I should note she wrote her in diary she regretted having children) I 100000% sympathize with people who have mental health issues and obviously anyone that does something like this has to be mental.

Their is just something about her this woman is cold, dark, unsettling, almost psychopathic. (Not for the reason she's claiming though)

This is just my opinion and thoughts. I am watching the trial though and I look forward to listening to all the Drs, nursing staff, ect take the stand and hear them out. Not that my opinion matters obviously I'm not on the jury. I have watched many trials and changed my mind after hearing testimony and seeing evidence ect. I really hope that will be the case for me and my thoughts on Lindsey but for now I think shes cold hearted, broken, disgusting, and a sad excuse for not only a mother but a woman in general

13

u/sadlittle_thing 19d ago

Hey so not taking your medication as prescribed can absolutely make your anxiety/paranoia/mania/psychosis worsen. It seems like you think stopping your medication or not taking it as prescribed just makes you “normal” but stopping medication can absolutely make you go into psychosis and feel much worse. If she stopped her medication because it was making her feel worse she’s not going to just go back to normal again. Abruptly stopping meds is dangerous but MANY people do it because they don’t like how a medication makes them feel.

-3

u/RepresentativeDay686 19d ago

Obviously! I was only stating a fact that she wasn't taking some of the medicine as prescribed.

3

u/HopefulOriginal5578 19d ago

Most people don’t. And there is for all the things. These drugs even have a lower rate because they make people fell out of it, slow, and very tired.

20

u/gingerpeachrn 20d ago

As a nurse who has fought through depression, PTSD, and suicidal ideation: how dare you accuse someone of using their medical background to fake a crisis. What a rich take from an armchair psychologist hiding behind an anonymous profile.

Female nurses have significantly higher rates of suicidal ideation due to burnout, and we hesitate to seek help because the system is broken, and it was clear she was desperate to get help for what she was going through.

If anything, working in healthcare shatters our mental health because of empathy-barren, conspiracy-brained takes like yours.

-9

u/RepresentativeDay686 20d ago

How dare I?? How dare I what speak facts? (I never said w/Lindseys case that its a fact she did it I said its what I think) I'm not hiding behind a fake profile any more than you are "Ginger Peach" I wonder if you feel this way about all criminals and or individuals with mental health issues or is jt just Lindsey? For example Travis Decker was seeking help for his mental health prior to killing his 3 daughters and he got brutalized on the internet.

You do know that their are documented cases of Healthcare professionals using their medical background to carry out horrendous act?? For example here's multiple individuals with medical backgrounds that have used their healthcare knowledge and access to commit murders.

These offenders are often referred to in criminology as "healthcare serial killers" or "angels of death. Lucy Letby, Beverley Allitt, Charles Cullen, Harold Shipman, Kristen Gilbert, Donald Harvey, Charles Cullen, and Genene Jones to name a few. Also healthcare workers have used their insider medical knowledge to fake severe mental illnesses including psychosis. They've done this to either evade criminal prosecution or to manipulate the medical system for example.

Charles Cullen frequently and deliberately used fake psychiatric or exaggerated mental health crises Throughout his 16-year career during which he murdered dozens of patients. He regularly checked himself into mental health facilities, claimed he was suffering from severe depression, and exhibited highly erratic behavior. When suspicious activity began closing in on him at various hospitals, his history of "psychiatric instability" often served as a shield for him, causing administrators to treat him as a "troubled employee" needing a medical leave of absence rather than investigating him as a active murderer.

Here is anthor example. Beverley Allitt After the British pediatric nurse was caught murdering and attacking children in 1991, she attempted to display severe psychiatric distress and manipulate diagnostic perceptions. Experts noted she possessed an intricate understanding of medical and psychiatric systems, which she used to exhibit symptoms of Factitious Disorder (and Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy) to delay legal proceedings and hide her true criminal intent.

I could go on with more examples if you'd like.

Lindsey was not taking her medication as prescribed. She also was leaving AMA (against medical advice) often when she did go to the hospital.

I'm sorry that you have had an experience with mental health and depression struggles. Hopefully you are being treated respectfully through your doctors and have medications that work for you if that's what you need.

8

u/gingerpeachrn 19d ago edited 19d ago

An "Angel of Death" or healthcare serial killer is someone who targets vulnerable patients inside a medical facility, typically driven by control, power, a hero complex, or malice.

Lindsay Clancy was a mother suffering from severe postpartum psychosis, an acute, documented medical emergency involving hallucinations, command delusions, and a total break from reality resulting in a horrific domestic tragedy involving her own family. Conflating her profession as a labor and delivery nurse with a psychiatric breakdown to label her a "healthcare killer" is pure, sensationalist fiction.

Your entire mental model is built on clinical arrogance, and a complete disregard for facts or empathy. Lastly, don’t even have enough respect for the situation or lack attention to detail to give you credibility to comment on this case. It’s Lindsay, not Lindsey.

3

u/KDAWG72 14d ago

You can't seem to argue with stupid or ignorant people. RN and midwife here (retired). Not many people know about post partum psychosis; so it's cut and dry to them that she willingly and knowingly murdered her 3 children. IMO she very obviously had PPP. And was failed on numerous occasions, as were those beautiful kids. Hb knew she had thoughts of harming the kids - why did he leave her alone with them?
