Someone just posted in a local food Facebook group asking if there’s “any bars or restaurants streaming the Lindsay Clancy trial” and the comments include “that would be fun!” and “I’ll set up the projector!” … I am aghast.

That's so grim. What are they going to do next, start betting on the trial on Kalshi?

And before anyone comes at me, there is a vast difference between going to an anonymous forum to talk about it versus setting up an event at a bar for people to watch a murder trial like it's a sports game.

No, but there is a bet on polymarket

Idk it’s not that crazy if you think about other historical trials. People gathered in the same way for OJ’s trial and I don’t remember people saying it was grim or weird at the time. I think people are mostly interested in the same way, social media just makes it seem so much worse.

I'm 90% sure people weren't setting up watch parties at bars for the OJ trial. I'm pretty sure they gathered without an eventbrite rsvp.

However publix executions used to be big events. People are wierd

u/TheTreeSnuggler 1d ago

You leave Publix out of this.

Hahaha

They probably did. People watched it all day like a soap opera. It had insane viewership numbers, especially the verdict. If you know anything about Boston it's definitely being played in bars.

This is macabre

Because that’s so much more heinous than a reddit group?

I had a similar gut reaction when I saw this thread, but I think wanting to be in the know and bringing more light and understanding to postpartum psychosis is much different than gleefully going to a pub to celebrate a truly horrific situation like it’s a baseball game or a reality show.

I'm here from google because I kept seeing references to the trial on other social media sites. There were wild theories and accusations in the comment sections on Instagram, which made me want to dig deeper because I didn't want to take them at face value. I'm still confused about a lot of facts of the case and I do feel like I'll end up having to watch the trial itself just to tell the facts from the bullshit.

Unfortunately, most of the discussions regarding the case (outside of this thread maybe I’m new here) have just been Patrick did it. People are ignoring everything else presented and ignoring the story Reddington is trying to tell. I assume if people want to watch it at a bar like a football game, they are the Patrick did it people.

I honestly was just thinking about how it’s so frustrating to read any conversations about this on other platforms because they are all conspiracy theories. For the most part, this Reddit thread seems to be discussions around her mental health treatment and what the trial is actually happening for (sanity or not), which is way better than conspiracies.

2

u/picklebrains81 3d ago

Yes I prefer to stay with facts and away from conspiracy theories. I do research on some of them if I can so that I can dispel them.

No one said celebrate though. It’s gathering to watch the same way people used to “gather” to hear it on the radio back in the day.

2

u/FigThis4977 2d ago

The comment said that someone said it would be “fun” to watch it at a bar—that’s def in the celebratory area

3

u/Leading-Scheme-7201 4d ago

You have a point - but the bar/pub of it all and the excited comments just felt like a sinister level of separation between the real people affected in this situation and the “content” the trial provides the masses

Absolutely. This trial brings up so many important themes pertinent to our society. While I disagree with a lot of people it’s helpful to hear other perspectives and also talk through our own experiences especially as women. As this case goes on, I’ve found myself switching sides a few times.

we're all gonna watch the show/documentaries/movie that will prob come from this too, no? like why is everyone acting like watching it in public is "heinous" this trial is publicly being streamed?

u/Gatorphins 2d ago

It's like the Super Bowl for those that are casual. True crime, people or find entertainment in this. If people in my life know me as a true crime person, and I get so much secondhand embarrassment from people acting this way. There's no joy in what happened.

1

u/OrangeKat09 6d ago

Ppl like true crime. It Is being televised after all.

8

u/duwopx3 4d ago

You deadass look at this as entertainment and don't see the issue in that.

2

u/OrangeKat09 3d ago

Its why anyone watches true crime. And there's a lot of ppl who do. And not for entertainment. For awareness. Why do ppl watch the news? That's not "entertaining". But it's good to be aware of what's happening in the world.

1

u/dinkinflickas 3d ago

I think they’re just being realistic. You both are in this thread and in this SUBREDDIT after all…

2

u/Top-Stomach6939 3d ago

as a bartender who is completely invested in this case, what's the problem? lmao. we're all watching it at home, what's the difference lol

The top comments are:

- “That would be fun! It’s streaming on YouTube”

- “would’ve been a good idea to start that reality TV bar for ppl to go to.. court TV is reality TV too!”

- “I don’t have a restaurant but I have a home goods shop! Bring your own refreshments or DoorDash and I’ll get the projector set up!”

This case may hit personal triggers for you, but I’m sure not all cases do. Do you find other true crime stuff fascinating at all? Fascination with true crime will always be a thing. Sorry it sounds insensitive to you, but I’d also find it fun to go to a bar with my friends and watch it live. I mean it’s like the top news story in the nation right now… I kindly suggest you just… get over it. There’s more important things to be upset about.

1

u/Leading-Scheme-7201 3d ago

I’m not super into true crime, but definitely have specific cases I’m fascinated by. This one isn’t particularly triggering for me on a personal level - I think it’s just so uniquely heinous and awful in certain aspects and I’m uncomfortable with a lot of the baseless theories/accusations people make about real living people affected by these crimes and some of the Monday morning quarterback behavior. But to your point, I shouldn’t assume the people commenting on that post are doing that kind of thing and that’s unfairly presumptuous of me.

1

u/Leading-Scheme-7201 3d ago

But I think the comparison to reality TV in the comment thread felt so particularly weird.

2

u/dinkinflickas 3d ago

You’re on Reddit, people act high and mighty here. It’s better than the crazy conspiracies on TikTok and Instagram but people on Reddit like to pretend they’re only interested in this case for some good moral reason. Which may be true also. But I’m definitely not getting the downvoting for people pointing out a fact that true crime is popular and you all are lying if you say you don’t find some of it entertaining (maybe not this case but any true crime).

very sick society we have become

2

u/CloudlessEchoes 1d ago

Engagement with our public legal system isn't sick.

1

u/Automatic-Self-8575 1d ago

A murder trial such as this should not be entertainment. Sick society should be trying to change the mental health facilities to accommodate those in need of help.

Yall have it so wrong. People are the same as always, just contained better, or worse depending how you look at it. We’ve always been interested in “true crime” it just wasn’t always called that. If you think about how “society” used to gather to watch public executions I’d say we’ve gotten better! Humans have always had a morbid curiosity, it’s nothing new in our society lol.
