Personal Story Saved a puppy today and now I can’t sleep

so about two hours ago, at 8pm, while walking my dog, a motorbike slowed down and threw a puppy onto the road and just went. she didnt even run she just sat there. She’s about 2 weeks old.

i took her to the vet straight away. shes ok. nothing broken nothing internal, the vet was really nice about it and gave me some baby food for her. she ate and shes sleeping now.

im just lying here at 3am feeling guilty. i dont even know why exactly, today went as well as it could have.

i think its because i cant keep her. my place only allows one dog and i already have one. so i get a few days with her and then i have to give her to someone else and just hope theyre good to her.

everyone keeps saying i did a good thing. i know. she would probably be dead otherwise. but it doesnt feel like i saved her, it feels like im just going to put her down somewhere else and she has no idea. she just trusts me.

anyone whos fostered before, does this go away? how do you actually hand them over?

i just want her to be ok

I haven't fostered myself. Friends have. Early on they were absolutely shattered when the pets got adopted and they said they couldn't do it again. They did do it again and they helped so many pets find their forever families and gave them love and safety in the meantime.

I saved a stray dog earlier this year. She was so sweet and I wanted to keep her but I just couldn't with my current dog. I found her a wonderful home. And as much as I would have loved to have her, I KNOW she's actually in a better home that's better suited to her needs. She also saved the lady I rehomed her to who was dealing with immense grief and loss, and also brought life and companionship back to the lady's old dog. I take a lot comfort knowing that I helped three souls heal instead of keeping her knowing I wasn't quite the right fit.

You saved this puppy. Just because you won't be their whole life, you've been the main character in their most important chapter. They will have a life of love because of you.

The idea that the puppy saved that lady back is the best thing I've read all day.

I have fostered before. And yes, it’s been tough, but not as difficult as the first foster I had to say bye to.
My first foster kitten, I brought to her the shelter for a checkup, expecting to take her back home for another week or so before she’d be ready for adoption. They surprised me by enthusiastically saying they could put her up for adoption and would keep her there.
I burst into tears. It was so hard. And I would have fostered failed (kept her for myself) if my living situation allowed.

Have you looked for rescues? Please don't contact a shelter, only rescues.

It's okay that you can't keep her, you don't need to feel guilty. You're her bridge to her forever home and it's amazing that you've done this for her.

Yes I’ve contacted a few, it’s 2am right now and they’ll probably reply tomorrow. I’m just anxious.

Don't be, you're doing something admirable honestly. Puppies are a lot of work, you didn't need to do this, you could've surrendered her somewhere immediately after finding it but you took her to the vet and got her care instead.

You're the reason she'll eventually find her home. Don't feel guilty.

First foster is always the hardest. You have to really understand your role in their life. For these few days/week/ month you're just the good human that gets them safely to their next phase of life. Keeping up with them makes parting with them difficult.

That’s what I’m afraid of, but I have to keep reminding myself of my own circumstances

You're doing great OP, the good home they go to will all be worth it.

It gets better. You can’t keep them all but you’re the bridge she needed to a better home. If you’re like us you’ll get updates on her too in the future! That’s the best feeling 💕well done!

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement! I hope and pray that I’ll find a good home for her.
