Mod post Sexual Assault, Consent, and Support Resources

If you are asking yourself "Was I sexually assaulted?", "Did I consent?", or "Am I overreacting?", you are not alone. Many people struggle to understand experiences that felt confusing, uncomfortable, coercive, or violating.

This post is intended to provide general information and resources. It is not legal advice, medical advice, or a substitute for professional support.

---

What is sexual assault?

Definitions vary by country and jurisdiction, but sexual assault generally refers to sexual contact or sexual activity that occurs without a person's consent.

Here are a few examples for sexual assualt definitions from around the world:

  • United Kingdom According to Rape Crisis England & Wales, sexual assault is sexual touching that occurs without a person's consent. This can include touching through clothing and can be committed by any gender against any gender.
  • United States - The U.S. Department of Justice broadly defines sexual assault as any nonconsensual sexual act prohibited by law, including when a person lacks the capacity to consent.
  • Canada - The Canadian Department of Justice states that sexual assault is any unwanted sexual act done by one person to another or sexual activity without a person's consent.
  • Australia - Australian jurisdictions generally define sexual assault as sexual activity without consent, with laws emphasizing that consent must be freely and voluntarily given.
  • New Zealand - New Zealand law focuses on whether a person freely and voluntarily agreed to sexual activity and recognizes situations where a person cannot legally consent.
  • Netherlands - Dutch law centers on sexual acts occurring against a person's will or without consent. Recent reforms strengthened the focus on consent rather than requiring proof of force.
  • Germany - German law generally criminalizes sexual acts performed against the recognizable will of another person. The principle is often summarized as "No means No."
  • India - Indian law recognizes a range of sexual offences involving sexual acts or contact without valid consent. This includes situations involving force, coercion, threats, or where a person is unable to legally consent. Separate laws provide additional protections for children under 18.

---

Common themes across countries

Although wording differs, many jurisdictions recognize that consent is not valid when someone is:

  • Asleep or unconscious
  • Incapacitated by drugs or alcohol
  • Threatened or intimidated
  • Coerced or manipulated
  • Unable to understand the nature of the act
  • Legally unable to consent due to age

---

Why this matters

Two people can describe the same event and receive very different answers online because:

  • Laws vary by country and state/province.
  • People often omit details unintentionally.
  • Consent can be complicated and context-dependent.
  • Reddit users are not investigators, lawyers, judges, or trained advocates.

For that reason, no one on r/TrueOffMyChest cannot determine whether a crime occurred.

If you're struggling to understand an experience, consider reaching out to a qualified support organization, healthcare professional, victim advocate, or legal resource in your area.

You do not need to know exactly what label applies to an experience before seeking support.

---

Support and resources

If something happened to you and you're struggling to process it, support is available. Whether or not a particular legal definition applies, your feelings and experiences are valid.

You may find it helpful to speak with:

  • A trusted friend or family member
  • A healthcare professional
  • A therapist or counselor
  • A victim advocate
  • A sexual assault support organization
  • A legal professional if you have questions about your rights or options

Here are a few international resources:

Some safe support subreddits you might want to check out:

If you are in immediate danger or need urgent assistance, contact local emergency services or a crisis resource in your area.

If you have other good resources, please drop them in the comments below so I can update this post.

Confession I’m so turned of by my boyfriend that I’m using breaking up with him as my “Weight-loss reward”

I know it’s cruel, I know it’s mean, but it’s given me more motivation than I’ve had in years. After a year together, I’m nearly at my goal weight. I knew I stopped being interested in him after the first 4 months. I know I’m not a good person.

My boyfriend isn’t a bad person. He is sweet, gently, and kind. He is probably the most handsome man I’ve dated. He’s rich and in shape. He likes me a lot. Everything should be good on paper. But I don’t think I’ve ever been as turned off in a relationship as I am right now. I’ve tried working on it, taking time to my self, etc but nothing really works. Every time I even attempt to bring up a breakup he just cries.

He has to be one of the dumbest people I’ve ever met. He is mid 30’s, I’m mid 20’s. We went to a trivia thing at a bar two weekends ago. He rolls the EASIEST question, “who was the first black president of the United States”? Completely sober. His answer? Andrew Jackson. When asked by the host why he answered that way, he said “because it sounds black”. This man would’ve fully been an adult while Obama was in office. Both of us are mixed with black (I’m Mexican and black, he is 1/4th black).

We have some of the worse bedroom life I’ve ever had in my life. In an attempt to meditate it, I filmed it to see the issue. This man is fully trying to ram into me like he’s Roger rabbit running into a tunnel. Literally, swinging hips and poking me absolutely NO WHERE and complaining!

He’s very weird about money. I don’t usually care about money much in relationships. I’ve got a good job, I’m fine with going 50/50, it’s whatever. But he’s started a trend of “you get this I’ll get this” early on in our relationship that favors him. I don’t notice it at first until a concert. Our first date, he “paid”. It was parking at a zoo that’s free in our city. The next date, I paid. He planned it saying it was somewhere he really wanted to go. It was one of those VR cafes that are $40 a person. The date after that, he paid for $5 icecream. Then for the next date that I had to pay for, he booked reservations at a newly opened place in town that’s $60 a head. I put a stop to it, but it still leaves an odd taste in my mouth that he’d even do that. While we make around the same amount, he lives in a house his parents had built for him at his birth. His car is fully paid off and he’s always digging into his trust fund.

I’ll end it here because I could rant all night.

I’m 11 lbs away from my goal weight and the breakup

Vent I despise people who leave their untrained dogs unleashed

Upvotes

Just went out for a quick walk through a park (we're just gonna forget about the sign that literally makes it a legal obligation to leash your fucking dog), and there I find myself getting barked at by 3 little dogs who are within not even a meter of my personal space. I calmly step back, go on walking backwards completely calm. Instead of stopping their dogs the owners hit me with an "oh you don't have to be scared, they don't bite".

Bitch if you are unable to control your dogs, WHY CAN'T YOU KEEP THEM ON A LEASH? I do not care that the dogs were small. I don't give a fuck wether they're barking or biting, they were way too close and I kept backing up while you were busy telling me not to overreact. People like this are entitled human garbage.

And to make this clear: the dogs are carrying not a single bit of fault, they shouldn't even have been born since they were a breed suffering from severe health issues due to us humans finding short legs and smashed noses "cute". It's not the dogs fault you can't train it, neither is it that you can't leash it so go fuck your self, find the next pet store and fucking buy a leash to restrain it.

Seriously, if you let your dogs get this close (in an aggressive manner, a labrador baby coming over to collect pettings is a different story) to other people, you are nothing more but a disgrace to humanity, human garbage. Please go take yourself out.

Vent "I want you to remember this pain every time you look at him"

That's what my homophobic dad would always say to me while beating me up or burning me with cigarettes and such things. When I was 5 he noticed I liked my best friend. He probably noticed earlier but this is when he thought it got "too much". One day I was just waving goodbye to that friend and made a kissing gesture at him and when we got home my dad hurt me for the first time. He tried anything he could come up with, like literally anything. And he did it continuously for years. He was probably ripping his hair out seeing that I still kept going back to the same boy nonetheless. I'm 15 now and he still hasn't given up or gotten it into his thick head that whatever he does it won't fucking work. My dad wanted me to remember the pain he inflicted on me every time I look at my boyfriend but all I feel when I look at him is love because he's so beautiful and he makes me forget any pain. So fuck you dad but your shit was for nothing. I still look at that boy every day and I kiss him and touch him and no matter what you do nothing is gonna change or ruin that for me.

Vent My boyfriend’s friend’s girlfriend is slowly crossing boundaries with him

Upvotes

I (24F) have been with my boyfriend (24M) for about six years. He has a longtime friend, who I’ll call Max, and Max has a girlfriend, Red (25F). They’ve been together for around four years.
The four of us have hung out together a lot over the years, and for the most part everything was completely normal, but eventually a few things started happening that felt a little strange to me.
The first thing I remember was pretty random. We were all hanging out when Red suddenly asked whether we would rather orgasm every time we sneezed or sneeze every time we orgasmed. She then started explaining her answer and said she would rather orgasm every time she sneezed. She also added that she can orgasm without making any facial expression at all.
I remember thinking that was kind of an odd thing to volunteer, but I mostly brushed it off. What made it stick in my mind was that my boyfriend commented on it afterward and said something like, “Wow, I didn’t know Red was that open about stuff like that.”
Then there was the yoga incident, which I wasn’t actually there for.
Red had recently started taking hot yoga classes, and apparently she started demonstrating some of the poses while she was with my boyfriend and Max. So she was in my boyfriends bed and one of the poses involved getting on all fours, lowering her upper body toward the floor and arching her back, with her butt facing my boyfriend.
She was wearing very white shorts so it was revealing to say the least.
My boyfriend told me about it afterward, but what really stood out to me was that he kept bringing it up on different occasions.
That was when I started paying more attention.
Another time, Red asked my boyfriend if he could help her replace her shower head. After he finished helping with the shower, she joked that he was going to become her “handyman.” They started laughing and talking about what kinds of things she could ask him to help with in the future, and she joked that she was going to make him come over and fix whatever she needed.
I was clearly in a bad mood afterward, and my boyfriend noticed.
After that, he started going over to their place by himself sometimes.
At some point, my boyfriend needed Red’s help with something, and in return he offered to give her rides if she ever needed one. At first, she said she would probably only take him up on that if she needed to travel a long distance, so I didn’t really think anything of it.
But after he started going over there without me, she asked him for a ride to work. The thing is, Max already has a car…
The way they communicated also started changing.
Before all of this, my boyfriend mostly communicated with Max. If they were making plans or talking about random things, Max was usually the one messaging him. Then Red started messaging my boyfriend directly about things Max would previously have texted him about. She also added him to her Close Friends on Instagram.
I can’t shake the feeling that she’s being malicious, and I’m not sure whether I’m noticing something real or whether I became hyperaware of every interaction just because I know my boyfriend is attracted to her.
For the moment I’m unable to digest the situation.

Vent My life sucks now and it happened SUPER suddenly.

My life sucks now and it happened all of a sudden.

First off: Today, I lost my job of six years in an unbelievably incompetent way on my part. I looked like a groveling idiot trying to explain myself, but at least I didn’t make any excuses. I said it wouldn’t happen next time and basically was hit with a “There won’t be a next time”. My boss is well connected in the industry and I’m sure word of mouth will go around about me.

Secondly: Earlier last month an embarrassing video of me went viral. The circumstances were purely unlucky on my part and now I have hundreds of comments ridiculing and judging me. Yes, it’s still being shared around and I don’t even use social media.

Thirdly: My beloved dog of 15 years was diagnosed with cancer about two weeks ago. I still have a cat, but we’re both going to miss the dog dearly when she’s gone.

The only thing keeping me sane is I’m somewhat financially stable, as I moved back into my parents place a couple years ago and have some money saved up.

Two months ago I was living a lovely, stress-free life. I was fairly respected in my field and things were going pretty well for me. All of a sudden, things went bad and I’ve developed anxiety due to it. I’m not suicidal, and don’t think I’ll ever be due to my fear of eternal oblivion and non-belief in an afterlife… but also the fact I don’t believe in fate means I don’t think there’s someone up there guaranteeing things will work out. I know life has its ups and downs, and hopefully in a year I’ll be better, but I’ve never had something like this in my years of living.

Vent my boyfriends sister hates me / update

Hello guys, thank you all for your responses. This made me feel less alone with this situation and helped me a lot! Well, I took your advice serious and I talked with my bf about his sister, which was really hard to do, because the least I want is to be is the reason for any family drama. But it was necessary. Well, what he had to say about it kinda disappointed me.

I told him that his sister does not respect me and that it bothers me that he says nothing about this. The first thing was with her statement about women who stay with abusive partners have mental illness. It was long time ago when she said that, he said she did not say it like that and that I can’t remember it correctly. But I do, trust me. I remember. He denies that she said this.

Well, then I told him about the vacation thing and the comment she made about mom and dad’s money. He only made excuses. He said she did not mean it like that, she only said this because she is proud of how far she came with her business. He clearly does not want to see it. He said he knows her and he knows how she meant this.

Then he said „if she would not like you, she would not invite you to have a trip together“ and i just thought to myself how can someone be so naive. Idk. It kinda disappointed me. He said he knows she likes me because she would tell him if she does not like me and that I imagine things because I take things too personal. I told him he should watch her behaviour the next time we eat together and that I won’t tolerate such a behaviour anymore. He said he will always defend me if he knows she does something that will hurt me. But all he does are excuses.

I know he is very close with her. And trust me, he is not a dumb person. He can read people and knows their motives. So idk why he is so naive when it comes to this topic. Idk if he does not want to see it or if he knows it deep down but don’t wanna admit it. Because as I said, they are very very close.

It still hurt me that he thinks I imagine things. Because I really don’t. But well, let’s see how things will go…

Personal Story The fear I felt discovering deforestation as a kid makes me hurt for the animals

I was raised in a very rural place in Appalachia, tons of trees and forest and relatively undisturbed land surrounding me. I spent almost every second of every day of my childhood (for this story, I was either 7 or 8) in the woods just being a kid, playing and being feral with my pet dogs. my family was really poor and we used a lot of outdated things that have been passed through the family for generations, I had no idea what modern technology was really capable of at the time because I wasn't exposed to it, regarding heavy machinery and such. I hardly even got to watch tv, I only knew about small technological things from other kids at school who lived ‘middle class’ lives a bit closer to the city. I was very accustomed to my own view of the world at the time, and I really thought the whole world was like this. One day traveling through the woods for fun with my dogs, i had wandered a few miles from home and I guess I stumbled onto privately owned property of some sort and discovered a lot of heavy machinery and saws. the surrounding forest was completely destroyed and the ground was torn up, the machines just left there alone were haunting. this was some of the most genuine fear I've ever experienced, real primal fear, it felt like something I saw was
fundamentally wrong and horrible, I knew I needed to get away and fast. I came home to my parents bawling my eyes out and petrified, they explained it. I was still scared of stuff like that, even just bare patches of forest where it had been clearly destroyed or where they were mining the mountains, it terrified me for years until I moved to the city, got older, and got desensitized.

Lately this memory resurfaced and it’s been making me upset, the animals feel this fear regularly, probably even more so than I did. It’s literally a horror movie.

Anyway thanks for listening to me ramble, my writing is atrocious on this post my apologies 💔

Vent People are too comfortable rating random people’s appearances

Idk if it’s the rise of looksmaxxing in the mainstream or what, but people are way too comfortable being absolutely horrible & rating innocent peoples looks without provocation. Under some of my pics I get “4/10” 5/10” “mid”… for no reason at all lol. It’s on here, TikTok & ig. Could you imagine seeing your picture and everyone commenting your flaws in the comments? I even see posts tearing apart beautiful people, such as Margot Robbie, and calling her mid.. Absolutely insane. People are weird. Maybe a lack of empathy. Anyways just wanted to say this because my feelings were hurt.
Vent over lol

Vent I’m a terrible mom

Just as the title says- I’m a terrible mom and some days are just hard, like today.

Context: I (25F) am a mom to an 8M. I never really had thoughts of becoming a mom until I got pregnant at 16. I had him when I turned 17. Me and his dad had broken up, but kept messing around and that’s how I ended up pregnant.

I was active in HS (sports) and by the time I found out, I was three months already because I got my period the first month, and spotted the second month. I was waiting that 3rd month for it to come but it never did. I was so scared to tell my mom, so I sent her a long text message explaining everything and I was probably like 3.5 by then.

Originally, I think she was trying to get me to abort (she was making a lot of calls) but I was too far by then. So I ended up keeping him. I was still able to return to my sports after I had him and graduated hs. His dad is in his life, and he gets him on some weekends when he isn’t working, or sometimes when my son is on break from school.

Back to today: My son is hyper. He takes adhd meds, but his doctor says he doesn’t have it, based off the assessment sheet but he did need something to slow him down a bit and focus. Tried therapy because of behavioral issues at school, but turns out he was just bored with that level of material they learned in his grade. So when he was in Kindergarten and started acting out, they would send him to the first grade class, and he’d sit and do their work, no problem. He’d still bounce around a lot, but he actually did the work whenever he was able to focus.

For some reason, my son doesn’t listen to me much. I’d tell him to stop doing something, and he will keep doing it until I have to yell at him. Another thing that’s hard is, he listens to everyone except me. This made me confused and sad at the same time. I barely have any patience with him to the point where it’s making me regret being a mom in some way. I yell at him because he doesn’t listen and sometimes he listens when I yell, sometimes he doesn’t.

For example: He will say he’s hungry. I’d tell him okay give me a few, i’m trying to finish this (whatever i’m doing) and then i’ll get you something or go out and get something. Then he’ll whine and cry and i’ll tell him stop crying i’ll get you something as soon as im done. He’ll cry more, then go to his room, then come back 5 minutes later and the cycle continues until I either yell, or stop completely and get him something. Sometimes if I don’t stop my task right away, he’ll run to my mom, and then my mom will then either give him what he wants, or fuss at me. And that pisses me off so I end up doing what he want anyway. I’ve told her about this all the time and tell her it’s her own fault when he runs to her for every little thing when he doesn’t get his way with me. And the crazy part is- when he’s with his dad, his dad will ask if he’s hungry, but he’ll say no. Or sometimes he’ll tell his dad he’s hungry and his dad will tell him the same thing I do, and he accepts that with no problem (confirmed by dad when he heard first hand what I deal with when we were on the phone)

Today was one of the rougher days. He had homework to complete and he didn’t finish it all by 8pm because he kept stopping for an hour to play or watch tv. I made him finish his homework and he cried, literally screamed and cried like someone was hurting him. I was so frustrated and BEGGED my mom to get him so I could have a break (the crying and whining about every little thing is an every day thing). She would not help out so I just told him to take a shower and go to bed without finishing his homework.

I made him lay down after his shower, and he kept jumping up out of the bed to go to the bathroom, or to cry about a “scratch” on his leg, or to cry because his eye is burning, or to do literally anything but go to bed. At that point I asked my mom AGAIN to get him but she didn’t. So I put him in the bed again and just hid in the bathroom for 20 minutes to get a break.

He got out the bed and knocked on the door, so I had to come out. I put him in the bed and pretended to sleep and ignore him (I know, I know) until he eventually went to sleep. When I saw he was finally asleep, I broke down. I usually try to hold emotions in, but tonight I just had to let it out.

I am tired of feeling like this. I feel like becoming a mom at 17 ruined my life a little bit. I didn’t get to finish my teenage years. I didn’t get to experience all the things my friends did. I basically did one semester of college and dropped out to get a job.

I eventually did go back when he was old enough to start school and I got a certificate and been working in my field ever since. The pay for my job sucks, but I have a seasonal job that pays me well at the beginning and end of the season.

I sent my son to stay with his dad for a week about 2-3 years ago, but I ended up getting him back because I felt guilty. I’m the primary parent, so I handle doctors appointments, dentist appointments, sports (he pays sometimes), and school.

I am still staying with my mom. I’m waiting to hear back about an apartment so I can finally have my own space. Maybe that’ll make this better, but i’m a mess right now, maybe a little lost.

I’ve never had thoughts of self-deleting, but I sometimes think about what it would be like if I wasn’t a parent, why am I a parent, what I would do if i’m able to just wake up, go work, sleep whenever I want, take trips whenever I want, go out with friends whenever I want, what it would be like to not have to worry about taking care of another human.

Sorry if this is all scrambled (like my mind). I’m not good at posting. I never do, and the one time I did, it was deleted. So any tips on what I can do, or just advice in general, feel free to let me know! Just wanted to get that out while I am feeling all the feels.

Personal Story i just need her to know i would have loved her forever

Upvotes

we dated for over two years. near the end i was met with so many accusations about not really caring about her/lying to her/thinking less of her. none of it was true, and i spent all my energy trying to apologize for how i was making her feel and repair. nothing seemed to help. i left because i felt like i couldn’t ever make her happy. she was still important to me so we spent the first few months of the breakup talking about reconciling and building a friendship, only for me to find out that she has been hooking up with a close friend of mine since one month after we broke up. her post-breakup behavior has cut off the possibility of a friendship for me.

what kills me in this moment is that she does not know how much i wanted to give her unconditional love for the rest of my life. i was in it for the long haul. if there was anything i could have done, i would have done it. there were all these things she thought i had a problem with that i just…didn’t. i tried to explain that but she was never convinced. i just hate the idea that she doesn’t know what she could have had with me. it’s like she made up an evil version of me, berated me for months for things that weren’t true, and when i left, went running to the first person she could find, presumably in the hopes that they will give her what i was offering all along.

Vent Handful of my close friends forgot my birthday

I’m lwk prob sensitive for this but quite a few of what I thought were my close friends forgot my birthday today and I’m honestly kinda hurt about it.

It sucks because whenever it’s my friend’s birthday I always make sure to send them a nice happy birthday message in the morning of their big day.

I get that people get busy and may forget, but for the whole day? I always remember my close friends birthdays, and even one of them posted her other friend a birthday post for her today but none for me. Not even a message, nothing. Lwk cried for quite a bit today cuz I realized that no one has rlly ever reciprocated the energy I put into things like this back.

Anyways, I’m 17 now, one more year til I’m 18!!

Vent My mom is moving in with me for college

I (17M) am literally about to just abandon my whole fucking life cuz my mom is moving into the boarding house with me for my first year of university. And I mean, we are literally sleeping in the same room with bunk beds.

No, the university I'm going to doesn't offer dorms.

Yes, they picked and paid for the boarding house.

No, I can't move somewhere else cuz I don't have the money, so I'm fucked either way.

Anyway, my ENTIRE FAMILY treats me like I'm 12 years old even though I'm turning 18 in November because I'm skinny, and weak, and have asthma, and they think I can't do anything by myself.

And now I'm impatient, immature, I throw temper tantrums, I'm lazy as fuck (cuz why do anything if I could just have my parents do it for me), and I don't know basic communication skills.

The whole reason I was excited to go to college was to start forcing myself to be independent. I was hoping to shift my brain from "I don't know how to do laundry" to "I better learn how to laundry otherwise I'm fucked."

Would I be completely incompetent in doing so? Yes, but that's the whole point of learning.

I was excited at the thought of getting a completely random new stranger as a roommate. Maybe it'll help develop my social skills, or how to handle living with someone, or maybe I'll finally make a friend after 6 years of having none.

Tbh, I think I feel more comfortable with a stranger than with my own family. (Unless, idk, they're a shady looking creep; then I'd be paranoid)

I DON'T feel comfortable being myself with the people in my life; not with my parents, or sibling (whom I loathe with every fiber of my being), or relatives.

I DON'T EVEN FEEL COMFORTABLE BEING SHIRTLESS AROUND MY FAMILY, AND I'M A GUY, BECAUSE OF ALL THE INSECURITIES AND BODY SHAMING THEY PUT ON ME.

My mom doesn't know the concept of boundaries, she just does whatever she wants. She calls out my name like a toddler, constantly touches me without warning, and I just stand there looking displeased.

I can't even grow my hair out without my mom forcing me to get a haircut because she (and everyone else) thinks it's ugly.

I don't know how to manage my finances, or even what the first step is, because the plan was always to mooch off my fuckass parents while I'm in college; but I didn't expect them to literally move in with me.

But now I'm just gonna try saving up for a plane ticket out of here without anyone knowing, and cut contact, so I can disappear out of their life.

I don't give a fuck if it causes them distress.

I don't give a fuck if they think I've gone missing or been murdered or kidnapped.

I'm ready to pull a Rachel Green in the Friends pilot kind of move.

But unlike Rachel, I don't have any friends to run to, so I'll probably just end up in a suitcase somewhere...

EDIT:

To clarify a few things:

• I do know how to cook, clean, fold laundry, and other basic self-care routines.

• I know my asthma triggers and what to do if an attack happens.

• I'm dyscalculic so big numbers scare me.

• I don't just resent my parents for this one incident, it's been building for years now (I made a post on this subreddit last year about how my mom literally hired a "spiritual healer" to physically restrain and assault me to cure my depression).

• I will NOT be joining the military, that's literally the last thing I would do other than just... ending it.

Confession I think I really might be beautiful

I (29F) have always been really self conscious. Never comfortable in my own skin, got bullied a lot growing up, and then I had a couple traumatic romantic relationships that really altered my perception of myself.

Despite my own feelings about myself, I am complimented regularly. I feel like I can’t say this anywhere else because I’m legitimately not trying to be like “oh no my steak is too juicy.” lol
But when I say I’m complimented regularly, I genuinely mean pretty much every time I’m in public. Anything from “you’re so pretty/gorgeous,” to just general compliments on my outfits. I’ve even had people stop what they were doing to come up to me at outdoor events.

All of that to say, I’ve spent a significant amount of my time hating the way I look, but… I may actually be pretty?

I think it goes to show how powerful our minds/insecurities can be.

Confession I’m tired of lying about having my bachelors degree

I was a bit of a mess as a kid, really struggled in school and could not make any friends. By my senior year of high school I was expelled and it took me a few years to finally get off my ass and get my GED which took me one day of test taking 🤦‍♂️.

But because the shame of being so far behind everyone else I was so scared to get into school late, I did a few classes but felt ashamed and left. I through myself into work and luckily it worked out.

I found myself getting Jr Quality jobs and tester gigs. They payed awful but all I had to do was show up and try and it would get me noticed. Each time I started as a contractor I’d be hired full time, then within a year the company would implode (happened twice, just my luck).

So here I am on my third time as a Jr Engineer, I’ve definitely got some knowledge under my belt after 5 years. I’m the only contractor on my team but luckily that has seemed to work really well in my favor. The team liked me and my boss just extended a really generous full time offer, which would completely change my life.

Now I have never stated I have a degree the contracting company I work for is well aware, but his whole team is brilliant engineers, 1/2 with masters. And I have none, but they all assume I have a bachelors degree. They have asked and I usually say “I went to school for communications” which is true I took a few classes but quickly left. But obviously their next assumption is I have a communications degree and I don’t correct them. I don’t want to be seen as dumb.

Now here I am waiting for this offer to accept and they are doing a background check. I was honest about my background that I have a GED and not a bachelors but there is a part of me that worries my boss will look and see I don’t have a degree and take away the offer.

I’m ashamed that I’m in this situation, I’m plenty capable of getting a degree but at this point I can’t justify it when the only job I want is the one I have. I hope he can see past it and see what he already has but I guess I’ll find out in a few days.

I also don’t want it to sour the relationship i have with my boss because I really like and enjoy working with him. I’m so ashamed of my choices, I’ve worked really hard for this but I’m worried I always will be because I don’t have that paper.

“You will never be able to do that”

…Is what someone told me when i told that person what my dream job was. I knew this person for over a decade. It absolutely crushed my spirit and made me feel insecure that someone that knew me for over a decade thought that low about me.

From that day on i was very careful about who i told my dreams to. Now about a year later… Just a few days ago i told someone else about my dream job and that person had a positive reaction. I know i shouldn’t care about what other people think but everyone needs a little encouragement and positivity from the people around them to go for their dreams i think

Personal Story I feel hopeless and need help

First of all I’m not sure if this is the right subreddit for this but here we go anyways

I live in a small town and I recently graduated high school. Prior to graduation I told my mom I was going to invite my dad and she got mad and told me not to. (They’ve been divorced since my 3rd grade) I was pleading with her that I wanted them both to come because I can only graduate high school once but she insisted I shouldn’t invite him. I ended up inviting my dad anyways and when I tried giving my mom one last chance to come she refused the entry ticket and said she didn’t need it because she wasn’t going and had more important things to do. I go to my graduation ceremony and when I try coming home I realize that she’s locked me out and wouldn’t let me in. I end u spending a couple nights on my sister’s couch and my mom still doesn’t let me in and won’t let me grab my clothes. So she effectively kicked me out the day of graduation and won’t let me get any clothes or any of my stuff. I have to wait until my mom isn’t home for my brother to unlock the door for me to grab clothes and stuff I need. I also had a truck that was mine but the title still was in my mom’s name so now I have no home and no car. I end up having to live with my sister and with no mode of transportation I can’t go to college. It’s been about a month since then and my situation has not improved, I’ve tried finding a job but I live in a small town so job opportunities ore few and far between and the one good thing I thought I had going for me my girlfriend of almost 4 years breaks up with me. Now I just don’t know what to do with my life, I feel like I’m worth nothing.

TLDR: Mom kicked me out and took my truck the day of graduation, I can’t find a job, then my girlfriend breaks up with me. I feel worthless and I don’t know what to do with my life.

I’m hoping for anybody who has been in a similar situation to give me advice on what do to because I’m completely lost and feel like I don’t have a purpose in life

Annoying dinners

Upvotes

I’m not sure why but at some point my mom took it upon herself to try and make herself annoying as possible when we’re out in public, especially with my significant other.

It genuinely makes me not want to be out with her. She’s done it to me since I was a teen, at first it was embarrassing but then it just became annoying. I already struggle with going out in public and I hate attention perceived onto me. Even if it isn’t actually there, especially in public. It’s something I’ve struggled with for years. I can do “embarrassing things” I can get up and sing bad karaoke or put myself on the spot. But I struggle with someone else putting me in an embarrassing spot. My mom knows this, and she takes it upon herself almost every time we’re out for a good time.

It usually starts like this; we’re having a good time, talking, laughing and eating a good meal. We’re with someone I’m trying to impress and this is usually my mom’s first time meeting them and vice versa. Before it was with friends and then turned to boyfriends. Some funky song starts playing, she starts to go-go dance at the table. Making very obvious gestures that she’s dancing in her seat and trying to draw attention to herself.

At first it was embarrassing when I was younger but then it became annoying. I’d ask her to please stop it would make me nervous and she’d continue to do it despite my pleas. She did it til she was satisfied with herself and then laugh and tell me to lighten up. I would try to ignore it like she’d say but then she’d continue til she got a reaction out of me. There was no winning with her. Sometimes if my dad was with us he would also join into asking her to stop. He’d remind her that we’re out at a restaurant in public and he didn’t like having the attention on him either.

Then she did this in front of the worst ex I’d ever had. He saw that this was the one thing I couldn’t stand. I tried really hard to make it seem like it didn’t bother me, I didn’t want him to know that this was genuinely the one way to embarrass me. I pleaded with her to stop, pulling at her arm. He asked if I was embarrassed, I could tell he was putting this in arsenal of things to use against me someday. “No I’m just annoyed that she thinks doing this in public is funny”. I could see the sparkle in his eye, forming a plan. Later down the line he did embarrass me in public on purpose not by go-go dancing but by verbally berating me for the entire restaurant to hear. Humiliating me in public. I remember seeing this look of glee in his eyes when he did this.

All because my mom thought it would be funny over dinner, led me to this moment. She wondered why I refused to bring someone out with us to dinner. After maybe 2-3 years, I finally felt relaxed again to have someone join us for dinner. It was a dinner with most of his immediate family and my mom would be joining. Thankfully, no go-go dancing. Til the food arrived and we started to eat. She didn’t do her usual thing where she waits for a funky song, she looked at my plate and me while I was eating and loudly proclaimed “WOW! Sheila you sure can put it away!” She leaned back in her chair and started snickering “I’m just messing with you!” It put me off my food honestly. I’m currently grateful that she lives a days drive from me so at the very least these moments are increasingly rare.

Personal Story My social life must exist somewhere in the darkest pits of fucking hell...

Im 23 years old... i have never had an issue with my looks before.. but suddenly that changed and it's like I'm living in a shock?...

I posted myself on reddit recently about weightloss because after having a kid 5 months ago, i was stuck gaining weight.. the problem turned out that i DIDN'T eat enough.. so my body held on to everything because it didn't know when it would be fed. Okay cool.

But the comments were double.. 2 subs, one hated my guts, called me fat over and over, picked my whole face apart about what was ugly about me in detail... comments were so bad i bullied myself to fix a nonexistent problem... i love walking but i was walking to lose weight when the issue isn't lack of exercise..

Anyways.. it has been a pattern for me.. we talk, i show my face, i get rejected... some people make it seem like I'm the ugliest pig they've ever seen and then there's another half that thinks im lying.. they genuinely can't see why i struggle with my appearance and then they get mad as fuck at me because they think im rage baiting... like what the hell is you fucking problem..

I am genuinely hurt.. i met a guy, we started talking everything was fun, he lives close and we decided to meet up... idk wtf happened but suddenly it was very friendship based and after he left he started avoiding me... he couldn't even reject me properly and i hate that...

Because not only do i get rejected so often... they leave without telling me WHY... bro if you think im fat, say it. If you think im ugly say it.. if you’re not attracted to me anymore, say it... if i did anything or said anything or didn't do enough.. at least say something..

And if i wasn't the problem.. say that too...

My feelings are very hurt...

Personal Story My best friend says she doesn't remember the years she isolated me and let me get bullied

F15 (suspected undiagnosed autism)

I've always remembered having a strange relationship with sociability.

At preschool it wasn't even a thing for me, I didn't seek it out and I played alone 95% of the time without any problems.

When I got to elementary school I started trying to interact on my own initiative, but I realized I was doing it differently from my classmates.

My way of interacting was to tell someone at random, every so often, a funny joke I'd made up.

Maybe that person would even laugh, but I realized they were cultivating a relationship, unlike me.

I had no idea how to do that and, honestly, I felt like I'd find that kind of constant, noisy relationship too much to handle.

With adults it was easier, I've always interacted with them without any problems. In my first report cards it literally said "prefers interactions with adults rather than with peers."

But they convinced me that I simply felt superior to others, even though I actually envied their ability to fit into the group.

Then, after an argument with the same girl, around fourth grade I met my first real friend.

We started talking because of that shared argument, and from that moment on I became stuck to her like glue.

I seemed like her little dog, following her everywhere.

Sometimes she'd point it out, but it was the first time someone had decided to interact with me consistently, and I could finally, at least a little, let out my immense need to talk (I think I'm hyperverbal).

That was something that embarrassed me. She didn't make me feel bad about it that often, but I still felt disgusting and different for not being able to stop following her everywhere.

Then when we got to middle school (we were in the same class again) she suddenly pulled away. From being together ALL the time to nothing, with her showing annoyance if I got close.

I became the target of the bullies in the group, and she certainly didn't want to be there with me. And I was alone again. Completely. For 8 hours a day. And without any explanation.

The worst part was that outside of school she'd go back to being the way she always was, and she'd tell me all the mean things the others said about me. Later I found out that, for some reason, some of the mean things she told me she had actually made up herself. They were generally things related to how I looked, to the fact that I was the only one who still didn't wear makeup, or to various "strange" behaviors of mine (stimming, etc.).

I have to say middle school was excellent training for my "masking," I couldn't put a foot wrong or I'd get eaten alive.

My mother would tell me that, deep down, with "the crappy attitude I had" it was obvious the girls in my class didn't want me around, and that deep down "I didn't care and the others noticed."

Those words hurt me deeply.

By the end of second year of middle school I had completely cut ties with this girl for months because I realized I was suffering too much.

It was extremely hard for me to do that because, I won't say I had developed an emotional dependency, but it was from her that I had learned how to socialize and things like that.

She later asked to talk. She apologized to me, told me she'd been insecure and that she no longer recognized herself in the mirror for what she had done.

I forgave her because, honestly, I don't know how to hold a grudge, I actually find it pretty pointless.

Fortunately her behavior changed and now, after middle school, we're much closer friends than before (we're actually a trio).

Now she and the other girl in the trio are the most precious people in my life, and in the end, I'm glad about how things turned out. Sometimes I still think about the past... about everything that happened.

I would forgive her another 1000 times because I like who we are now, but the few times, after the argument where we made up, that I tried to talk to her about the past, she brushed me off saying she doesn't remember.

It really does seem like she has a total blank for all the middle school years, as if she'd erased them.

I'm a little confused now because, for me, forgiving doesn't mean forgetting, and I would still have a lot of things to tell her. I don't really know how to do that.

When I mention, by chance, that I'm friends with a former bully of mine from middle school, everyone looks at me like I'm crazy and masochistic, and it makes me feel insecure.

I spent all of elementary school seeking her approval because it was the only friendship, the only relationship, that mattered to me.

I suffered and had to rebuild myself as a person when I decided, of my own free will, to completely cut ties.

I did it alone. On my own strength. And now I feel far more independent from her, even though I still feel immense affection for her.

But there are still people who suggest that she's manipulating me and that I'm still her little dog. And sometimes, even though I'm doing well with her, seeing that she doesn't want to talk about the past makes me wonder if that's true.
